Quote: | In the US, the married are in the minority
Married couples, whose numbers have been declining for decades as a proportion of American households, have finally slipped into a minority, according to an analysis of new census figures by The New York Times.
The American Community Survey, released this month by the Census Bureau, found that 49.7 percent, or 55.2 million, of the nation's 111.1 million households in 2005 were made up of married couples - with and without children - just shy of a majority and down from more than 52 percent five years earlier.
The numbers by no means suggests marriage is dead or necessarily that a tipping point has been reached. The total number of married couples is higher than ever, and most Americans eventually marry. But marriage has been facing more competition. A growing number of adults are spending more of their lives single or living unmarried with partners, and the potential social and economic implications are profound.

The fact that the demographic trend is towards fewer marriages has nothing to do with the sanctity of marriage. Nonetheless, this trend isn't all-too surprising to me, considering the studies of it we did last year and somewhat this year.

Personally, I think marriage is on the down (percentage wise) because a lot of young people, myself included to a certain extent, think it's too complicated. I mean, I'm going to be in school for appoximately 6-7 years finishing my program and it's just too complicated to be in college and to be married for me.

One solution would be to legalise same sex marriage. Then the numbers would increase

That is pretty accurate, according to demographic studies and whatnot. One of the major components of this trend revolves around people marrying later, for a number of reasons, among them the fact that individuals, both male and female, are focusing more on education and, yes, it's difficult to live a married life when both spouses are immersed in education and whatnot. That's a large component to it.
They're also looking at the cost of living in terms of marriage as well.

That and marrige tends to tie people, while that's not a "BAD" thing, it does make things differnt. When your together, your together. Marrige will just make it all....tied.

Actually, I'm surprised about how the majority of the guys I know are WANTING to get married. It's just logistically, for some reason, not possible what with education, looking for jobs, and the uncertainity of where their job is going to take them.
It's generally stated, stereotypically, that guys are afraid of the commitment, but I've found that just not to be the case.

I thought the issues with marriage were well-demonstrated in the philosophy class I took. We were talking about relationships and fixing them... myself and an older woman were speaking on how you come up with a new way to work the relationship and keep going. Out of a class of 30, only the woman and I were a proponent of that. Everyone else stared at us puzzled.
"You just find another partner."
A lot of people no longer believe in love. Or in compromise. Both men and women are both increasingly, so I've seen, taking the side that in a relationship they should never compromise or be submissive in any matter. Relationships don't work like that. Mine doesn't, anyway. All the "woman power" and he-doesn't-own-you has some valid aspects, but I think it's being taken to an extreme.

I just must be lucky then. Every relationship I've been in has been with a gentleman who always wanted to work things out, almost to an extreme. I have issues getting guys to leave when things get too complicated and just not right.
