Fri Sep 29, 2006 4:35 pm Mark Foley Scandal |
|
Quote: | Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Mark Foley, a Florida Republican, submitted a letter of resignation to House Speaker Dennis Hastert today after ABC News queried him about sexually explicit messages with underage congressional pages.
``I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent,'' Foley said in a statement.
ABC News today said the network had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former pages who said Foley made references to sexual organs and acts. |
Another republican bites the dust, Isn't that 4 that have resigned in this Congress. Duke Cunningham, Tom Delay, Bob Ney and now Mark Foley.

For different reasons, of course. This one is definitely intriguing, but it doesn't say anything about Republicans. It just so happens that these politicians caught in these troubles are Republicans.

I'm a republican, and I can still say that these politicians, from either party, who are stupid enough not to realize that everything they do will be watched, must be completely off their rocker. Especially with something involving underage workers, who notoriously can't be confided in, for the simple fact that they are still kids. Punishment for crimes against people that respresent us to the whole country should be extremely severe. We entrust everything to these people, and when they betray that, they forsake the entire nation.

I agree entirely, Mr. Pickard. This is vile, and I'm definitely glad he resigned.

Quote: | House Republican Election Head: I Told Hastert About Foley E-Mails Months Ago
WASHINGTON Rep. Thomas Reynolds, head of the House Republican election effort, said Saturday he told Speaker Dennis Hastert months ago about concerns that a fellow GOP lawmaker had sent inappropriate messages to a teenage boy.

This is more distressing. I've always liked and respected Hastert. Now I'm questioning my support of him. This is disturbing.

Relating to this story:
Quote: | Washington Times Calls on Hastert to Resign
The conservative Washington Times is calling on House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) to resign his leadership post following his mishandling of the Foley scandal: "Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once. Either he was grossly negligent for not taking the red flags fully into account and ordering a swift investigation, for not even remembering the order of events leading up to last week's revelations -- or he deliberately looked the other way in hopes that a brewing scandal would simply blow away." |
Quote: | More Scandals to Come?
Last night, ABC News investigative journalist Brian Ross suggested "there may be other members of Congress who engaged in inappropriate behavior towards congressional pages."
Said Ross, "Were hearing quite a bit from former pages. Theyre sending us all sorts of messages about possible other members." |

I've been hearing about "inappropriate behavior" concerning Congressional pages for my entire adult life. I'm not saying it's right, but this is by no means a new thing.

Quote: | Foley Scandal: Hannity blames Bill Clinton
On Hannity & Colmes two minutes ago, Sean Hannity said that Democrats were being hypocritcal because Bill Clinton did the same thing.
And then he said that Monica Lewinsky was 19 years old - "she was a teenager" - when Bill Clinton began his affair with Lewinsky.
Umm....Sean...Monica was born on Jul 23, 1973. According to the Starr Report, she first met Bill Clinton on November 15, 1995.
That would make her 22 years old at the time. A college graduate. An adult. Hardly the same situation as a Congressman soliciting minors... |

I didn't get to watch the news one bit last night, so I didn't see that. There may well have been more context to Hannity's statements, though I doubt it. Rush said she was 19 today too, but apparently they both got it wrong.
But, frankly, I don't care. I'm very displeased with the Republican response to this. It's just not like I expected, or think appropriate.
Not sure if Hastert should resign, but he did wrong.

Apologies for the double post, but HAH! This is just great.
According to the Fox News Breaking News bar currently on the top of the site, "Foley Claims He Was Molested by Clergyman When He Was a Teen."
Who would'a thought of this excuse?
Right now, if I didn't think it was so dang important to maintain Republican control of the House and Senate, I think I might just vote 'em out of office, with a few exceptions.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he told House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office in 2004 about worrisome conduct by former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages -- the earliest known alert to the GOP leadership. |

Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) confirmed "that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction" Rep. Shays on Foley handling: At least no one died
That surprised me and struck me as a very...immature arguement. I agree that what happened with Kennedy was horrible. However. 1. It was in 1969 for crying out loud! That was almost 40 years ago!
And 2. he's trying to make it seem like sexually harrassing a minor like it's really not that criminal an offence and downplay it. That's just sickening.
I think he just shot himself in the foot...

At best this is an incredibly distasteful joke. At worst he was actually serious and lacks a conscience.

Idiot. I, too, hope it's a joke, and a horrible one, because that's just sick. Conservative or Liberal, it's sick.

He said it because Ted Kennedy was campaigning for his opponent. It may cost him his re-election.

I hope so. Someone who makes those kinds of comments so openly should not be a member of our Congress. It disturbs me a lot.

Well from what Ive read (right wing blogs) they seem to be pleased with the comment. They Like that the GOP is finally fighting back.
But thankfully that doesn't seem to be the view of the STV GOP.

o.O
That just boggles my mind.
However, I don't take blogs to reflect the majority opinion as I find they tend to represent the most outspoken opinions (of both parties).

Indeed, including me. I may be an ideologue in terms of my conservatism, but I'm not a partisan Republican ideologue. I'll call on Republicans when they're wrong, because when they're wrong they're wrong. And in this case, they're right in many general terms, but when you get down to the rhetoric, I've been very dissapointed.
