Mon Oct 09, 2006 6:51 pm Alaska villages reject Venezuela oil |
|
Quote: | In Alaska's native villages, the punishing winter cold is already coming through the walls of the lightly insulated plywood homes, many of the villagers are desperately poor, and heating-oil prices are among the highest in the nation.
And yet a few villages are refusing free heating oil from Venezuela, on the patriotic principle that no foreigner has the right to call their president "the devil." |

Wow... these people have a lot of patriotic pride. I certainly hope something is done though, so they can recive heating.

Good for them. And yeah, I hope the situation improves for them too.

^ Nah, the Republican position on assistance to Native Americans is "let them open a casino."

Never heard that one before. Seriously.
I love the fact that these natives are standing on principle. It's really enlightening.

Why is it so enlightening?
You're acting like this is a surprise. Why?

Because it is. I don't believe or agree with it one bit, or with the spin of it under which you operate, depending on what it actually is.

As opposed to what? The Democrat position of ignoring them?
You ARE aware that the casinos, despite being a stereotype, has helped them with money?

Huh?
You said it's "enlightening"--and sounded like you approved. Now you say you don't believe or agree with them?
No spin. It just sounds like you're unaware that NAs as a group tend to be conservative. So it's absolutely no surprise to me that they responded by turning down Venezuelan oil.
No spin. It was a simple question. A simple answer would have been nice.

A casino isn't going to help Alaskan natives in remote villages that people can't get to.
Besides, it was a joke.

No spin? Read carefully.

I still don't get where you think I'm spinning something.
And again. *Why* is it "enlightening"?
To be enlightened means you've learned something--had a "lightbulb moment." What did you learn from these natives taking this stand?
I don't understand your statement and am asking a question rather than assuming your intention.

I disagree with that. I use "enlightening" in terms of having a spiritual effect upon me, or something like that. It's not a surprising, lightbuld-causing thing that I'm talking about.
And I was talking about spinning regarding your "let them open a casino" comment and arguments revolving around that.
I think we're just having a misunderstanding here.

Yeah...but no one said anything about sending a casino to them.
Anyways, as for the topic. I respect they sacrificed free oil for the defense of their leader and nation. There is hope after all...
