So I was kind of inspired by MIS's Doctor post. But I wonder if anyone's done engineers. My favourites have to be Scotty and Torres with OBrien following closely

Well that pretty much covers all of them doesn't it. Scotty was pretty boring in TOS series, but much beter in the movies. O'Brien was never a chief engineer. He was the chief of operations on DS9, and the transporter chief on TNG. Torres was too emotional to be the best. So that leaves La Forge, who was probably the best.

La Forge best as an engineer, yeah- but not as a character

I take trip over all of them "he had character" and knew just about everything in engineering. If he were engineer today in any star trek movie or series, i dont think anyone could beat him not even scotty.

LaForge I'd say. O'Brien was amazing too.

No...chief O'Brien was definitly the chief of engineering onboard DS9. He just had a different rank and title, but that was definitly his role.
O'Brien is the best to me because he knew how to run Federation and Cardassian system. On top of that, he was a soldier in the past.
Scotty is a close second.

I personally think O'Brien and Scotty are tied. As Andy mentioned for O'BRien, and Scotty, being such a merical worker.

O'brien and Scotty do remind each other of one another. Torres is in a class of her own. I liked La Forge in TNG, but he wasnt gr8 in the films.

Scotty, I have no idea who O'brien is, DS9 I guess? Scotty was the funniest, and he was the best in my opinion.

I think the best engineers were Torres and La Forge. I think both were very good, but I just really liked Torres. Probably because she was a better character sometimes. I also liked how creative Torres was and how she thought "out of the box." But I think it almost ties for Torres and La Forge for me.

I kind of like Trip because he had so much pressure on him to actually operate the first starfleet starship. Second choice would have to be LaForge. I didn't like Miles O'Brien as a character at all ( he might have been a damn good engineer, but his character was very annoying to me and so was his nagging wife.)

- Seems like your judging her personality more than your judging her quality as an engineer.

Her personality affects her ability to be an engineer.

I would have to agree, there was a couple episodes where she got mad and hurt people because they didn't agree with her idea(s)

for me it goes:
O'Brian I ve just been watching season 1 of Ds9 it was the episode with the alien probe the lonely pup, I dont think any of the other engineers would have thought of doing what he did hes also a good engineer with the many tasks he has done, I mean scotty, torres, trip & gordie never had to run a station that was a forign computer system.
after O-Brian I think Torres, for her manor in which she does thing by the thin blue line of her duties and her loyalties my fav episode with her engineering is the one with the torpedo that was a good episode.
after Torres its a tie for me with Gordie and Scotty, both are equaly as good as each other.
Then last but of all no means last is Trip he was the first with technicaly with out him there wouldnt be any other engineers.
but to me he wasnt that good compared to the achevments of the other engineers.

I've got to say Scotty, even if other characters have more depth or whatnoth, he's the legend. Even people who don't know Trek, know Scotty

harddd question scotty was a "miracle worker" O'brien knew FED, and CARD, systems, LaForge was blind, and Torres had major anger problems. Im just going to go for O'Brien from knowing two different systems, and all the awesome things he was able to do with DS9 and its operating system
