I was thinking, in eps.. like Gambit and Premptive Strike where Picard goes into a bar and puts on some act- wouldnt it be obvious. I mean someone of Picard's calibre would be bound to be on the Fed's news all the time!

Do we know who the Captain of the flagship of the US Navy is? Most people don't, but if we were a sailor in the Navy, we would probably know. Just the same, I'm sure most of the people in Starfleet know who he is, but it is unlikely that most of the people of the Federation recognize him.

Well, I happen to be in the Navy...we we really don't have A flagship. Or that one Captain that we just KNOW...

Lol, shows what I know. I'm about to be in the Navy...maybe I should find out a little more before I ship then.

Anyway, I still don't think everyone knows Captain Picard, especially not what he looks like. Most everyone in Starfleet would likely know of the Enterprise, but that's probably all.

well I'm a former Army soldier, and I know that with us, we have to know the entire chain of command and who they are so that we could recognize them in the even we ever ran into them. This was we would know to salute. So I don't know how it works for all the other branches but it kinda goes against this topic because in most militant groups you have to know pretty much everyone of high importance.

You're talking about in your chain of command all the way up to the president...now, granted, we're SUPPOSED to know that, and we're taught it in boot camp, but it's not pressed with importance afterwards....although I'm sure somebody in my immediate chain of command would frown if I didn't salute the CNO...(Chief of Naval Operations...4 Star Admiral ****)<<<{Four Stars...not a bad word...} LOL...

man ya'll get lucky then, if we don't salute an NCO (non commision officer) or an Officer...we get in a lot of trouble, that why we are taught it in basic and are taught to remember throughout our service. (Even though I have no clue what the chain of command is anymore..I've done forgoten)

Still, Picards not just a Starfleet officer, he's a famous face, all thos emissions and battles, he's bound 2 be a hero. Like everyones heard of Nelson, especially at the time. And over here in England, I know quite a few present-day naval captains and admirals- met a lot at the TRafalgar200 event in Portsmouth last year
