Christie Golden comes up with excellent stories, but has a terrible writing style.
My favorite author would have to be Peter David. Imzadi one of the best Star Trek books. Right behind him would be D.C. Fontana, who in addition to writing several episodes, wrote the greatest Star Trek novel, Vulcan's Glory.

Another fave is Keith RA Decandido. He comes out with great stories, and humorous ones- like Articles of the Federation and the Dominion story in Worlds of DS9 Vol3

Jeffrey Lang, SD Perry, and KW Jeter. All the Trek authors I've met and really liked.

Im not into New Frontier, but like P. David. Not fond of KW Jeter either. Perry's Unity was fantastic, and currently I'm reading Susan Wright's VGR 4: Violations, which is intriguing

I actually didnt like Jeter's 2 books ("Warped" and "Bloodletter") that much. He had a couple of very interesting ideas (like the quarrantine chamber), but the writing was very dry.
Jeffrey Lang did VERY well with "Left Hand of Destiny", I absolutely loved those 2 books.
SD Perry had amazing talent with the DS9 relaunch ("Unity" and "Avatar").
Given that I am friends with KW and SD (they are both in the Portland area!), I have a lot of their books signed.
