I like the Mac G5s I have at work, but I wouldn't like one in my room. So... I don't know.

They're apparently [url="http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/64bit.html"]working on it[/url]. And I think the most compatable you're going to get accross different OS's and machine is the keyboard, and the internet. Every single OS has different quirks. The fact that Windows has such a dominance in the market makes it look like they're the most compatable machines.
And cost...yeah, they're expensive. I will have this machine for a while because of that. But considering how much I wanted to get away from Windows, and how I needed more compatibility than Linux could give me. |
But i'm not even talking about compatibility as in the operating system. When I mention x86, it refers to a hardware set that software including whole operating systems can be written to execute on. Well x86 is a very basic and broad term where these days we have SSE X, hyper threading and now the duo core which are all hardware standards that operating systems are written to run on.
Where with a mac the hardware and operating system are both developed within the company, and there is not even a reference for other companys to make their own hardware (ie nvidia make the chipset, msi OR gigabyte OR abit, etc, make the product, dramatically saving cost). What Mac are saying is you are only a computer user that checks emails and browses web pages and have a much smaller brain than us, so we shall produce as much of the product as possible and not make the product compatible and open out our architecture. |
I don't know that much about hardware, so I can't answer your first statement very well.
As for the second one. Not entirely true. I believe Sony makes the batteries, and now Intel is making the processing chip (or whatever it is). And I have a ton of programs on this computer, and can run them all at the same time without any noticable slugishness. GIMP, Word, VLC player, iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, Google Earth, iCal, Address Book...And I have to get to class.  |
Ok well I take that back things must have changed very recently. I would say the change is about 30 years or so too late, though

Well, haven't looked at the market shares of Apple computers, but I do believe they are becoming more mainstream. I know my school has a full Mac lab in the art building, and my HS had two Mac labs. And when I go into a coffee shop or something, I've noticed the proportion of Macs and PCs are about even.
But that's just my observation. I know that technically that PCs have the vast amount to the market, but I'm optimistic ^-^
