PostMon Oct 02, 2006 4:16 pm    Mac Computers

Ok, its been a while since I've posted in this forum, but I need to say this. I also want to know what other people think.

Who likes "mac" computers? If so why?

I personally DISLIKE mac computers 100%. Why? Well I am very loyal to Windows and Intel. I think Mac computers are a waste of money and although there good for graphics and such, but as a computer programmer, what use do I have for them?

I'm in love with mac. They don't freak out all the time, smooth running, versatile, beautiful, they LIKE me. And besides. New macs have intel dualcore processors and can run windows too. I have little use for windows, but if I ever needed it, I would get a mac that runs both, and use windows sparingly.

Simply: mac works.

Seeing as I am currently typing this on my beautiful MacBook Pro with a 100GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM....

Macs run more smoothly, are more secure, are more beautiful, and have a much higher level of quality control than PCs. I am personally never going to own a Windows machine ever again if I can avoid it. If I have to get a tower, I'm gonna build my own and run Ubuntu on it.

The only downside to Macs that I can think of is compatability with Windows programs, but if the popularity of Macs increases enough (which I think it's begining to) there may be a rise in Mac based games.

I grew up with Windows, but used Mac in school (still do). I think for alot of people if one uses Windows, Mac system is strange to them and vice-versa. I know Windows and I know how to get around in a PC. But a Mac...not so much.

Yes I am biased...but I don't like Mac's.

^That's what made me hesitate when deciding what laptop to get. Fighting with the computers at home and at school did me in. It's worth a week or so of mild confusion.

I've never used a Mac, but from what I've seen I like, though I do feel they're just too expensive for people like me. That said, I don't run Windows either.

I don't like macs because they have no real compatibility industry standard, like example, x86.

They are ridiculously expensive and they don't do better than PC's for what applications I need. This is especially so considering there are virtually no games out on the mac. I would use a mac if it was very cheap or free.

They're apparently working on it. And I think the most compatable you're going to get accross different OS's and machine is the keyboard, and the internet. Every single OS has different quirks. The fact that Windows has such a dominance in the market makes it look like they're the most compatable machines.

And cost...yeah, they're expensive. I will have this machine for a while because of that. But considering how much I wanted to get away from Windows, and how I needed more compatibility than Linux could give me.

I have never used a mac and have no intention to start. Im perfecly happy using a PC.

Games and software also seems to take much longer to come onto mac than PC.

Exactly, a mac has no real use for me as well. I might be biased on this becasue I'm heavliy into computer programming, offlne and online alike. I have never owned a mac, and I dont think I ever will (unless university forces me) because for some reason they seem to be targeted at beginner computer users - I would feel embarassed if I had one

Explain, dont just say "macs have better security" "they run smoothly".

Is this what you think or fact?

Yeah, they do have better security. There's, what... one virus out for mac? And how many for windows? And Macs don't freeze as much. In six months I haven't had a freezing issue but perhaps once, and probably because I was getting impatient . The only time I had a problem on my mac was my fault. They do things better. Like, I can give my mac several commands, and it doesn't bother me about it. I give the same commands to my mother's Dell (comparable in processor and RAM), and it spits at me. It pauses. It whines. It stops. It makes me whimper, because my mac would've just calmly taken the commands and said, "Yes, my dear, I'll have all this done for you in ___ minutes..." The compatibility is going to get better, and besides, like I mentioned, you can now run windows on mac, but once you get used to OSX, I think most sane people would only resort to windows when forced. My mac is pretty. It can change the background every 5 seconds and doesn't slow down my processes. Try that on a windows machine. The graphics are lovely. And it's user-friendly in many ways. Fewer errors, more unified--ical, mail, etc., isn't all disconnected, they work together.

So many reasons I love my mac. The cost does trouble me too, I admit. My lappy (Vashea, the illustrious Powerbook G4) was given to me by a very wealthy friend. If she hadn't given it to me, it would've been a lot for me to get a mac on my own. Having tried it, I've decided that even if it takes a little more saving, the mac is worth it.

"Prevent stress-related heart attacks. Buy a mac."

When I go off to college next year, I think I am getting a MacBook. I know a bunch of people who have them, and they all love them so much. Soooo I suppose we'll see when I get one.

That is actually a fact. The only issues I've had or heard of in using a Mac are entirely user based, and the majority of that is simply the fact that people have got it in their heads that it's an impossible system to use (I used to think that, and then I started to put a little more effort into understanding it and suddenly it all made sense )

And lets look at security gaps:

XP Home Edition had 28 holes in 2004, 5 remained unfixed as of May 22, 2006. In 2005 8 out of 37 holes were unfixed, in 2006 it was 1 out of 6.

Mac OS X had 15 holes in 2004, 22 in 2005, and 7 in 2006. All are fixed.

Source. Numbers pulled from PC World magazine.

All OS's have security gaps, even next to Linux (2 out of 23 unfixed holes in 2006) Mac OS X has been patched the fastest.

Windows also only updates once a month. This is in a world where virus definition lists are updated practically hourly.

But i'm not even talking about compatibility as in the operating system. When I mention x86, it refers to a hardware set that software including whole operating systems can be written to execute on. Well x86 is a very basic and broad term where these days we have SSE X, hyper threading and now the duo core which are all hardware standards that operating systems are written to run on.

Where with a mac the hardware and operating system are both developed within the company, and there is not even a reference for other companys to make their own hardware (ie nvidia make the chipset, msi OR gigabyte OR abit, etc, make the product, dramatically saving cost). What Mac are saying is you are only a computer user that checks emails and browses web pages and have a much smaller brain than us, so we shall produce as much of the product as possible and not make the product compatible and open out our architecture.

I don't know that much about hardware, so I can't answer your first statement very well.

As for the second one. Not entirely true. I believe Sony makes the batteries, and now Intel is making the processing chip (or whatever it is). And I have a ton of programs on this computer, and can run them all at the same time without any noticable slugishness. GIMP, Word, VLC player, iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, Google Earth, iCal, Address Book...And I have to get to class.

The people dissing macs on here don't own one. Certainly your choice if you never do! But I think you're missing out.

Yeah, I do find it interesting that it seems like the people arguing against Macs don't own one and have only used them in passing. I've never heard of a Mac owner hating their computer. Even my best friend who is about as computer illiterate as it gets loves hers. And my supervisor at my summer job (CS cirriculum writting for 10th graders) loves Macs, even though he doesn't have one because he also uses his machine for gaming. And he isn't running Windows

The keyboards i used were just bad so were the Macs, I am told however, (Aside from the points in this topic) that the Macs are more compatible now. Not to mention, they do not have so many security holes. I may look into em somday.
