PostThu Sep 28, 2006 9:39 pm    Songs that make you cry...

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley

I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

hallelujah...

well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah

hallelujah...

baby Ive been here before
Ive seen this room and Ive walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
Ive seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

hallelujah...

well, maybe there's a god above
but all Ive ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

Far Away by Nickelback, The Day You Went Away by M2M, Breathing by Lifehouse, and One Last Breath by Creed. Long list, but all of them have a great personal value to me.

Poet, that's really strange... yesterday I was listening to that song you posted, and I was thinking how much it impacts me, too. And I was wondering what it was called, because I'd only heard it on a movie, I think, and couldn't remember which. It has a beautiful longing sound to it.

I remember this one from first grade:

The Old Grey Goose Is Dead

(Traditional - Arranged By David Allan Coe)

GO TELL AUNT RHODY
THE OLD GREY GOOSE IS DEAD

GRANDPA FOUND HER DYING
IN THE MILLPOND ON HER HEAD

THE GANDER WON'T EAT NOW
GANDER WON'T EAT NOW
BECAUSE HIS WIFE IS DEAD

LET'S PRAY FOR THE BABIES
PRAY FOR THE BABIES
BECAUSE THEIR MAMA'S DEAD

SOMEBODY GO TELL AUNT RHODY
GO TELL AUNT RHODY
THE OLD GREY GOOSE IS DEAD

SOMEBODY GO TELL AUNT RHODY
I WANT YOU TO GO TELL AUNT RHODY
GO TELL AUNT RHODY
TELL HER THAT THE OLD GREY GOOSE IS DEAD

LORD, NOW GO TELL AUNT RHODY
CHILDREN, GO TELL AUNT RHODY
WANT YOU TO GO TELL AUNT RHODY
TELL HER THAT THE OLD GREY GOOSE IS DEAD

EVERYBODY GO TELL AUNT RHODY
NOW, NOW, GO TELL AUNT RHODY
NOW, NOW, GO TELL AUNT RHODY
GO TELL AUNT RHODY - TELL HER
THAT THE OLD GREY GOOSE IS DEAD

There was a girl in the class who broke down in tears and had to be carried out of class. She never came back.....

Pierro the Clown by Placebo nearly ALWAYS sets me off. The imagery it forms in my head just kills me.

Leave me dreaming on the bed,
see you right back here tomorrow,
for the next round.
Keep this scene inside your head, as the bruises turn to yellow,
and the swelling goes down.

And if you're ever around, in the city or the suburbs, of this town,
Be sure to come around, I'll be wallowing in sorrow, wearing a frown, like pierrot the clown.

Saw you crashing 'round the bay,
never seen you act so shallow,
or look so brown.
Remembered all the things you'd say,
how your promises went hollow, as you threw me to the ground.

And if you're ever around, in the backstreets or the alleys, of this town.
Be sure to come around, I'll be wallowing in pity, wearing a frown, like pierrot the clown.

When i dream, i dream if your lips,
when i dream, i dream of your kiss,
when i dream, i dream of your fists,
your fists,
your fists..

Leave me bleeding on the bed,
see you right back here tommorrow,
for the next round.
Keep this scene inside your head, as the bruises turn to yellow, and the swelling goes down..

And if you're ever around, in the city or the suburbs, of this town, be sure to come around, I'll be
wallowing in sorrow, wearing a frown, like pierrot the clown,
pierrot the clown,
pierrot the clown,
pierrot the clown,
pierrot the clown.

Well, I've never actually cried because of a song, but a few close calls I guess have been:

"Perfect" by Alanis Morissette
"Against all Odds" by The Postal Service
"The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice
and
"Absense of God" by Rilo Kiley

"Hallelujah" is a great song. I have four versions on my iPod, with another one in my iTunes shopping cart.

"Tough little Boys" by Gary Allen

I never once, backed down from a punch
Well I'd take it square on the chin
I found out fast, a bully's just that
You've got to stand up to him

So I didn't cry, when I got a black eye
As bad as it hurt, I just grinned
But when tough little boys, grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again

Scared me to death, when you took your first steps
Well I'd fall every time you fell down
And Your first day of school, I cried like a fool
And I followed your school bus to town

I didn't cry, when ol' yeller died
At least not in front of my friends
But when tough little boys, grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again

I'm a grown man, but as strong as I am
Well sometimes its hard to believe
How one little girl, with little blonde curls
Can totally terrify me

If you were to ask, my wife would just laugh
She'd say "I know all about men"
And how tough little boys, grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again

Well I know one day, I'll give you away
And I'm gonna stand there and smile
When I get home, and I'm all alone
I'll sit in your room for a while

I didn't cry, when ol' yeller died
At least not in front of my friends
But when tough little boys, grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again

But when tough little boys, grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again

**************

stupid song... making me want to get married and have kids already. The music video's good too

Streets of Heaven by Sherrie Austin.

Ugh, this song just kills me it's so sad!!

Hello God, it's me again. 2:00 a.m., Room 304.
Visiting hours are over, time for our bedside tug of war.
This sleeping child between us may not make it through the night.
I'm fighting back the tears as she fights for her life.
Well, it must be kind of crowded,
On the streets of Heaven.
So tell me: what do you need her for?
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever.
But right now I need her so much more.
She's much too young to be on her own:
Barely just turned seven.
So who will hold her hand when she crosses the streets of Heaven?

Tell me God, do you remember the wishes that she made,
As she blew out the candles on her last birthday cake?
She wants to ride a pony when she'd big enough.
She wants to marry her Daddy when she's all grown up.

Lord, don't you know she's my angel
You got plenty of your own
And I know you hold a place for her
But she's already got a home
Well I don't know if you're listenin'
But praying is all that's left to do
So I ask you Lord have mercy, you lost a son once too

And it must be kind of crowded,
On the streets of Heaven.
So tell me: what do you need her for?
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever.
But right now I need her so much more.
Lord, I know once you've made up your mind,
There's no use in beggin'.
So if you take her with you today, will you make sure she looks both ways,
And would you hold her hand when she crosses the streets of Heaven.

The streets of Heaven.

Bob Carlisle - Butterfly Kisses

There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank god for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
In all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world.

But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you
don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.

She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not
sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
She leaned over...gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"

Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.

I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.

There's a lot of them actually. Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley, Be Without you by Mary J Blige, and Turn the Page by Metallica. They all have really personal meaning to me.

A song alone won't really make me cry, even if I really appreciate it, because I need both visual and audio stimulation. A song alone will stir up my emotions, but I haven't cried to just the song. However, I find that I cry in more movies with good scores and during scenes with potent music than when there's just nothing (or a bad score).

Last night, for example, I was watching Sci-Fi's miniseries Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, and there's about five minutes near the very end of part I in which there is no dialogue. It's purely climax; all of the main characters fulfilling their roles, all the while to the accompaniment of Brian Tyler's amazing score. That's when I cried--it brings tears to my eyes just remembering it now--and I wouldn't have if it weren't for the music with it.

Arlington by Trace Atkins

I never thought that this is where I'd settle down.
I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown.
They gave me this plot of land,
Me and some other men, for a job well done.

There's a big White House sits on a hill just up the road.
The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home.
They folded up a flag and told my Mom and Dad:
"We're proud of your son."

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington.

I remember Daddy brought me here when I was eight.
We searched all day to find out where my grand-dad lay.
And when we finally found that cross,
He said: "Son, this is what it cost to keep us free."

Now here I am, a thousand stones away from him.
He recognized me on the first day I came in.
And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels,
And saluted me.

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington.

And everytime I hear twenty-one guns,
I know they brought another hero home to us.

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done.
We can rest in peace;
'Cause we are the chosen ones:
We made it to Arlington.

Yeah, dust to dust,
Don't cry for us:
We made it to Arlington.

Oh, there's anotherr song, I don't cry, but effects me.

"Where'd you go?" - Fort Minor. After about 4 months of telling me about it, I finally listened to the song and agree with Ziona, it's good

If I Had Only Known -- Reba McEntire
From "For My Broken Heart"

If I had only known
It was the last walk in the rain
I'd keep you out for hours in the storm
I would hold your hand
Like a life line to my heart
Underneath the thunder we'd be warm
If I had only known
It was our last walk in the rain

If I had only known
I'd never hear your voice again
I'd memorize each thing you ever said
And on those lonely nights
I could think of them once more
Keep your words alive inside my head
If I had only known
I'd never hear your voice again

You were the treasure in my hand
You were the one who always stood beside me
So unaware I foolishly believed
That you would always be there
But then there came a day
And I turned my head and you slipped away

If I had only known
It was my last night by your side
I'd pray a miracle would stop the dawn
And when you'd smile at me
I would look into your eyes
And make sure you know my love
For you goes on and on
If I had only known
If I had only known
The love I would've shown
If I had only known
