You're actually going to sit there and say that Star Wars isn't original? Virtually no sci-fi show/movie can equal Star Wars, save for maybe Trek.
EVERYONE knows Star Wars. Does everyone Know Farscape, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactic? No...

Star Wars isnt original. Its a medival storyline, just in space.
The only reason it is so well known, is that George Lucas has a good marketing team.

Death Star = Impenetrable Fortress
Jedi = Magicians
Princess Leia = Princess
Solo = Rogue
Luke = Chosen hero...
It's like a fairy tale...

True, but c'mon! That is a common theme in so many stories. It isn't like Lucas ripped it off and claimed credit. It's hard to credit the things you listed to one source since so many have used it. He at least made it unique with adding sci-fi, but I do respect your opinion on not liking the two genres to be mixed.

Star Wars owes a great deal to Dune, as well.

Everyone knows Survivor, too. Doesn't make it any good.
I happen to like Star Wars, but please, PLEASE, do not use "it's popular" as any kind of defense for anything. Ever.
As long as we're talking about what's big, though, it seems to me there are three: Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. Sadly, Who isn't as well-known as it should be in the US; but it's huge in the UK. As the only SF TV series with more episodes than Star Trek, it *should* be big.

From YOUR point of view Survivor is not good.
It being popular IS a testament to Star Wars, whether you like it or not. There is a reason that even episode I-III are generally disliked, it banked millions of dollars together? Why? BECAUSE ITS POPULAR.

I wholeheartedly agree with Founder.
For instance, last year, when my currently AP Gov teacher was my AP Human Geo teacher, he told me that Star Wars was the first movie that people, including himself, really went to see more than once. It was the first movie he ever saw twice, and it just wasn't done back then, seeing a movie more than once.
Star Wars is a major success which is a testiment to how good it is. No film franchise has been this popular throughout such a long time frame.

Kind of, but even the Medeival stories like that run back to Greek Myth... this is the "monomyth", the most common, yet still most compelling storyline that has come from the beginning of literature. The first ones were actually Beowulf and Gilgamesh in the Anglo-Saxon period, followed by The Odyssey and The Illiad of early Greek literature.
The monomyth is what author Joseph Campbell calls "the archetypal journey" where the hero (Luke Skywalker) "ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder." He's called to an adventure or journey of some kind, and then goes into what is known as the initiation of his journey, in which he must go through a "road of trials."
One major point on this road of trials in the initiation is the atonement with the father (Darth Vader's initial revelation of himself to Luke to Luke's acceptance of his father). Then a few more steps and the archetypal hero enters the phase of his journey called "the Return" where he brings back a symbolic "elixer" back to his people, *this of course, from Luke, is his Jediness and the fact that they've beaten the Empire.)
So... no, it's not original in this sense. George Lucas made it to follow this monomythic cycle because he studied Joseph Campbell (author of The Hero With a Thousand Faces, where the study of the monomyth originated) for quite some time before he even came up with Star Wars. That book actually came out in 1949. Read it. It's good.

What's your point? The Lord of the Rings Trilogy banked more then the new trilogy, does that make it better and more popular?

I didn't say Star Wars was "better" then anything. Does it make it more popular? Obviously to some, yes.
I thought my point was rather obvious though. The person argued that you can not say a movie is good solely on the basis it's popular. I said the person was wrong. Millions of people and millions of dollars went into Star Wars. I doubt people would waste their money on seeing something bad now would they? Especially since the majority went to see it multiple times.
Almost everyone knows what a lightsaber is, know who Darth Vader is, know what a Death Star is. Etc.
Why? Because Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises in movie history.

Exactly, Founder. And also, Link, no, Star Trek doesn't count because while people recognize the names Kirk, Spock, Klingon, Vulcan, and Vulcan neck pinch, they don't often know much about it, and it doesn't nearly have as much of a fan base as Star Wars has throughout its time out there.

You have to know the definition of every term, what each race is?
There was a poll a few years ago. 1 in every 4 people on the planet will recognize a picture of William Shatner as being Captain Kirk. (I'll try to google it). I like Star Wars, some, but would be less likely to recognize Mark Hamil, (actually had to try to remember his name), or recognize the Millenium Falcon than I would the Enterprise.
I'm sure this has nothing to do with anything, especially since I only read a few posts, but, felt like posting.
I think I own all of the Star Wars movies because they are Star Wars, and, well, are a part of history. But I own Trek because I actually like it.

But its original he made it into a franchise. I don't know of any other Space-faring Fairy tale as popular as Star Wars, and that not because of good marketing.
