Flag Officer Ranks:
"Flag Officers" are what the most senior section of Starfleet is best described as. These Rank's are the highest levels of command.

Fleet admiral:

Admiral:
The Rank of Admiral, is the second highest Flag Rank in Starfleet.

Rear Admiral:
One of the lowest grades of Admiralties, if not the lowest (Depending on how one precives a Commodore)

This is the lowest flag rank in starfleet. At an unknown time, the rank became known as Rear Admiral, Lower Half. In that case, this also marks the lowest rank of Admiralty that can be achived.

Line officer Ranks:

Fleet captain:
This is not a "rank" but a position, which is given to highly distinguished Starfleet Captains. This Position is extremely rare, one is given the highest honor in line ranks to recive it.

Captain:
This Rank is the most senior position in the line officer rank. Most often, this will have been found to be applied to Starship or Starbase commanders. One could considar this rank a major transition as it is most often the first rank that someone can run a base of operation (Starship or Starbase for example) by themselves (For the post part).

Commander:
This rank is the rank immediately inferior to Captain. An officer of this rank typicaly, are base commanders (Example, Sisko prior to his promotion to Captain) or, first officer of important starships (Riker on the Enterprise-D is an example of this). One achiving this rank typically has aquired 10-15 years (at least) of expearience in starfleet.

Lieutenant:
The Lieutenant rank is inferior to the above rank. An officer at this position typically has some command experience. Occasionally, one can find someone of this rank as a department head on a starship or station. Usually, they are shift leaders under a Lieutenant Commander,. (Like, a LT. Cmdr has A shift, Lts have B and C respectivly)

Lieutenant junior grade:
This is the rank inferior to Lieutenant. Officers of this rank can be seen holding support positions on Starships and Starbases. Also at this rank, officers have begun to show their ability to serve acceptibly withing the ranks of Starfleet. Typicaly, a Lieutenant beings to take on more senior roles in command positions. On the extream rare case a cadet more then excells in the Academy, the cadet can (and probably will) skip the lower rank of Ensign.

Ensign:
The Lowers Line officer rank in Starfleet. This is most often, the rank given to officers that are new graduates from Starfleet Academy. One will typically find Ensigns starting thier careers as the most junior officers of their chosen specialty. Ensign who strongly distinguishe themselves in their academy classes, or on duty may be given posts as main shift bridge officers. One will typically spend approximately three years at this rank.

Cadet Ranks:
There are 'ranks' that are held by cadets that attend Starfleet Academy. They are only held durning their training to become commisioned officers. They usually reflect the cadets year at the academy. (Example, a 4th year will have four pips)
