Thu Sep 28, 2006 3:45 am I've just finished Season 1 and i'm not entirely convinced. |

I've just finished watching my Season 1 DVD set. To be honest, the show isn't really living up to the hype that has been set for it by fans who have recommended it to me. So far, it's a slightly darker TNG on a space station. There have been some great episodes. I loved Emissary, Babel, The Passenger, Vortex, Progress, If wishes were horses, In the hands of the prophets.
It's not to say I haven't liked the show so far, it's good but nothing has really blown me away. One thing that REALLY REALLY annoys me though is that they're still plugging Lwaxana Troi. I finished TNG last year which I loved, but was happy to see the end of Lwaxana. She doesn't make regular appearances does she?
But there are two characters which are really making the series worth while for me: Odo and Quark, those two work off one another really well. They never fail to make me laugh.
So, my question, DS9, should I give it another chance?

You've only watched season I. ALL of the Star Trek shows start off badly for some reason. Season I of TNG is laughable, DS9 is mediocre, and VOY is flat out boring. Hell, even ENT didn't get good until season 3 on.
Season III and beyond are when DS9 really shines, but not watching season II is not the best thing either. I suggest watching and I assure you that it gets amazing. The Dominion War will blow you away.

Yes I agree with Founder - you should watch more. What I've seen of season one, it's pretty bad. But I've been watching random episodes on spike, and it's certainly captured my interest and right now I'd say it's better than Voyager. And that's something I wouldn't have said five years ago--five months ago.

Seriously, Seasons 3-7 are absolutely amazing. You just have to stick with a few slower seasons to get to the gold. I will even admit that Seaons 1 and 2 drag really bad. They concentrate a lot on developing the Bajoran culture and establishing working relationships through the characters, and it makes the series boring. All you need to do is keep trucking through, and then you will be very happy.

I watched seasons 3-7, and then went back to 1 and 2. After knowing how WONDERFUL DS9 was, I was able to appreciate the first two seasons for what they were. And Lwaxana is in about 3 episodes in the whole series.

I didn't mind the first season actually. A couple episodes I'm like "Neh" on, but several, I find my self re watching, (PFFT, compared to Voyager, which has like none) like that one where people cant talk right, etc... But as ones said before me, continue towatch, Season 2 gets better, season 3 just takes off. I recently got season 5 on dvd (Yeah, yeah, before I got 2,3 and 4, but it was 56 dollars) and I was blown away. I want more!

Exactly. Season I and II drag at first because they're trying to discover where it is they're going. I don't suggest skipping any seasons, because you will miss out. Just watch all of them, all of the way through. You'll definitly be able to look back and realize that season I and II were not so bad.

Yeah! those are my thoughts. Having seen many of the later seasons/episodes, I can appreciate the episodes from Seasons I/II.

I actually quite like Season two but i agree its not the best. It picks up in season 3 and starts gettin good from there. The show got a hell of alot better because of babylon 5. So i suggest you still hang in there and keep watching. Plus dont forget the first season aired in 1993. a whole of 13 years ago!

That's very encouraging from everyone, i'll get Season 2 then. As I said, it's not that I didn't like Season 1, it just hasn't grabbed me like other shows have in the opening Season, but I am definitely going to give it more of a chance.

"Duet" is one of the best, and is in season two or one. But everyone's right, take comfort from the fact that it's getting much better later, and then you can appreciate the early ones more after seeing the later stuff. I did.
They expected us all to care immediately about Bajorans and their politics. They really needed to make us care, not take it for granted. Of course, later, we do come to care, and that's one reason the early ones are better after seeing the later ones.
