I think it would have been good if he went to the Acad., and in the War Jake was an ensign and ben was always worried about him getting killed.

I think it was cool that he was still in the fighting and all there, yet wasn't obligated to do anything by the rules of Starfleet. I think the best for the storyline was to not remove Jake from the picture (to keep the concept of Ben being worried all the time and having a responsibility other than the station, duty, and the war). Jake would have had to leave for the Academy if he was to join Starfleet.

They already had Nog go to the Academy. Both of them would have been a bit too much, IMO. Besides, he is definately not that the Starfleet type. Someone like him probably wouldn't have lasted through the academy.

No.

It was nice to see civilian roles. Besides, there were plent of episodes where Ben was worried about Jake.

Are you saying Jake was an Ensign in the war, or if he went to the Academy he would have been an Ensign in the war?. As far as I know, Jake never had any commision in Starfleet. His only job for them at all was his journalism practice.

It was good to have a face put on the civilian population of DS9. Every time things got rocky, they just kind of sent all the innocents away, but you never really knew any of them except Keiko and Morn and a few others. Having Jake in that group helped you to really care about the innocents, rather than just the Starfleet people and whatnot.

Yeah, he would have made an awesome officer, but a civilian char of importance was pretty awesome, and him being in the limelight if being the emisarys son was bad enough, lol.

Jake didn't have the heart to be an officer. It just wasn't in him, I never thought it was. I loved him as a reporter/writer, I think they did right by his character.

On a side note, originally Sisko did want Jake to join Starfleet. I think it was in the middle seasons that Jake revealed he didn't want to go.

It was a good choice to not make him Starfleet. It would have been far too predictable. Besides, we already have the young kid joining and serving with a parent. (Wesley and Beverly Crusher)

Indeed, although the Dominion War certainly changed his outlook on things.

Yeah, Andy, you make a point there. Let's face it though, Jake would have been a better officer
