No stars ahead for 2 years, eh?
(in Night). We can see stars in the DQ from here with a decent telescope, just because there was no stars in the area doesn't mean they wouldn't be able to see any, surely?

They said IN the episode as to why they couldn't see stars. It was at the very beginning of the episode...I suggest rewatching it. But for those who don't have that luxury, here's the exact quote...
Seven: I completed an Astrometric scan of the entire region. There are no star systems within 2500 Lightyears.
Chakotay: Nothing?
Seven: Nothing.
Chakotay: Why can't we see any stars beyond that?
Seven: There are heavy concentrations of Theta Radiation. It has ecluded our sensors.

That was pretty much the whole point. It was eery. They were literally ALONE for the next 2 years of their voyager...it was good. It would have been FREAKY to have lost complete power in that place...oooh...

- Sort of re-afirming that they are alone, like when they first got flung out their in "The Caretaker" but....
I have to say: they shouldn't have done this episode, the same exact thing happened in "Night" There was no need for this episode...

very strange how there would be a void of NOTHING when we can see stars well farther away than 2500LY...not ot mention that their return trajectory puts them fairly close ot the center of te galaxy where there is quite a bit of light due to the acretion of stars and gas there.
Looks to me like they blew it with this one

No they didn't. They explained it in the episode.

Theta Radiation may have ocludded the sensors, but it wouldnt have done anything to visual depiction on exterior shots, or for anyone who just might be looking out a window...assuming of course that Theta radiation (much like all radiation bandwidths beyond either side the visible spectrum) is invisible to the unaided eye. But nevertheless, it wasnt becasue of Theta radiation, because there was clearly a VOID that the creatures were living in, there wouldnt be, being closer to the galactice center than we are now....
Even if you were passing through one of the gaps in the galactic spiral arms, you would still be able to see stars around you

Oh, you're getting 2 episodes mixed up because of the title of this topic. There WAS an episode named "The Void" in season 7, but the topic creator is referring to season 5, "Night."
"The Void" was a completely different type of episode though. I liked it. Yes, it was kind of reminiscent to that of "Night," only due to the fact that there were no stars. Otherwise, it was completely different. I enjoyed it, really...

They wanted a good storyline that was eery and would make Janeway reflect on her decision. It was good. For all we know, there might have been some other type of anomaly that prevented them from seeing stars...we don't know.

- Oh, ooOps.
Side note to the creator of this topic: You should create a more specific topic name. Like... The void in "Night"

It was an interesting episode. It was different, seeing a point with no stars. The only thing I don't get is how the engineering staff seemed to have nothing to do. What? So, being surrounded by stars causes the need for maintenance? o.0

If you are actually in a void, there is no matter or energy acting against you to cause resistance to movement except for any imperfections in teh engines themselves, so the engines would actually perform exceedingly welland most likely above specs and tolerances.
Like they said, if it werent for sensors (which I thought were ocluded becasue of theta radiation, eh?) they wouldnt even know they were at warp
Flying through a void would be the absolutely smoothest ride anyone has ever had, however they'd go thorugh fuel a lot faster as there is nothing for the Bussard Collectors to collect

They said their sensors couldn't get passed the Theta Radiation. Not that the sensors didn't work at all...

Every time I think of "Night" I want to call it "The Void".
I thought of that problem with not seeing the stars, too. Their being far away is no reason for them to be totally invisible. Someone brought up the gaps between the spiral arms... these are filled with gas and dust, not empty space. Maybe that explains it. Not that they had that in mind. I wish they'd used more real galactic geography.
I'm fond of that moment with Janeway holing herself up in her cabin.

well... the show takes place in unexplored space... complete creative liberty for the writers there, they can make up anything they like.
i thought that this episode was pretty good!

Speaking of The Void, that episode was similar to Night in terms of the environment they were in, including the 2 years of complete darkness.

Yes, especially as both eps. called the void 'The Void'. This post is referring to the Night one.

Agreed. I feel like I would go CRAZY w/out stars. You'd think w/ how advanced they were though then, they could create perhaps some holo-image thing to project fake stars for them.... they're able to do so many other things, that seems like a small task to undertake
