Character Biography: Douglas Spears served on the original U.S.S Skylark 20 years ago and observed it's destruction. After contributing to the defeat of the Cardassian Union, Spears is now an Admiral. Pulling some "strings" and arranging for a posting, maybe his final, on the Skylark, Spears is looking forward to it. With "The Old Kentucky" still in supply and cigars on demand, the crew will be experianced a "blast from the past", 20 years ago style......

Physical Descrption: Umi still looks young, albeit the age of 33. She usually wears her hair pulled back, swept up into a tight bun. She is petite in size, always walking gently and speaking softly. Even though she has a small presence, she still commands her ship with control and balance, accomplishing her tasks on time and to perfection.

Character History: Originally the captain of another vessel, Umi has experience and a personality to match. She is soft-spoken and easily spoken to, but she still expects and demands respect from her crewmembers. However, she has never been the type to lord over her crew. She enjoys spending time with them on a level that is not overlording and omnipotent. Umi graduated from Academy at the age of 24 and jumped in head-first into her career. She is not what others may call accomplished in regards to awards and commendations, but she has earned the respect of her fellow officers and all crewmembers she has had contact with. Her ex-husband still resides in Washington State with their five year old son. Umi, upon graduating from Academy relinquished her hold on her son to her husband, Tobias, admitting she had no time to worry about children and also admitting that her ex-husband was a very good father. She and Tobias still converse and talk often.

Background: Was on the original Skylark as the Captain and offered to be an Admiral,but wanted to have less responsibility this time around. She felt as though she made too many mistakes the first time and that's why the ship had been destroyed in the first place.

Description of Appearance: Despite his feminine name, Lauren Van den Haus is actually a very tall well-muscled man. His orange hair, and green skin color, however, make him stand out a bit. His towering presence intimidates alot of people, however, he is a very easy-going individual. The oddest thing is probably his blue tail, which is rare, even among his people.

Bio: The years of Klingon tyranny on his homeplanet have lasted so long, dates, and even the planet's original name were lost in history. After a successful Top Secret starfleet op, which rescued some of the inhabitants, Lauren Van den Haus, previously an untranslatable name, took on the name of the young ensign who died to protect his family, as per tradition.
After successfully passing the Starfleet academy entry exams, and blasting through most of the courses with ease, He quickly blazed up the promotion line, running solo-cargo-shuttle runs, and dodging attacks in un-armed vehicles. His record highly notes Tactics and Piloting as his two main points, while a few admirals have pointed out that his social abilities are rather... abrupt.

San Fransisco, Starfleet Headquarters, Office

The sound of drumming fingertips on a desk surface cut through the near silence of the room, grating on the ears of a younger woman sitting behind the desk. Umi Okashi Motokishru, a young woman of 33, glanced around the room, first at the man standing before her, then at the window to her left and then back at the man. A sigh escaped her lips.

This man had come bearing a mission for her... to captain a new ship for the means of exploration. She half-liked the idea and half-disliked the idea. Here in San Fransisco, she had a rather cushy job at Starfleet headquarters and wasn't quite sure if she wanted to give that up. Another sigh escaped her lip as she turned her chair to look at the man.

" I see you're not going to leave until I say yes." She watched him, half-amused.

"Yes, Umi. That's the point." The man chuckled slightly at this. Umi hesitated a moment before standing and extending her hand.

"I guess I'm your woman, then." She shook his hand quickly and laughed at her hesitancy to take the position. "When do I leave?"

"As soon as you like." He answered. She liked the answer. "Just give me a call when you need help moving your things."

"I don't have much in the way of material positions." Umi crossed her arms over her chest. "But thanks for the offer."

San Fransisco, Outside USS Skylark II

That was two weeks ago. Umi Okashi Motokishru now stood, looking up at the USS Skylark II from her position on the ground, eyeing the ship quietly. It was a beautiful ship, she had to admit. Now she only hoped it was spaceworthy.

Just Outside the USS Skylark

Kate looked at the new Skylark. She missed her old ship,but glad to be on another mission. It was her first in twenty years. She was offered the position of Admiral,but turned it down. She felt as though her first attempt of being in charge backfired,with her ship being destroyed. Kate had no idea who the crew would be,but hoped that some of her old crew would be on this ship.

Onboard the USS Skylark

She walked onto the ship and wondered if anyone else was there. She started to wander around the ship,noticing it was set up just like the original. She was glad over that. The first thing she did was go to her quarters and started to unpack. When Kate got to her quarters,she placed her belongings on her bed and just walked around the room,to familarize herself with the new surroundings. Then she sat on the corner of her bed and remembered what the Admiral said on her way out. He said that the Captain was younger than her and was coming from starfleet headquarters and she was not to disobey her because of her being younger. It made her wonder just how much younger this Captain would be.

Inside the USS Skylark

Umi quickly made her way up to the ship and inside. She had studied the Skylark's layout for hours the night before, so she knew exactly where everything was. That wasn't a problem. After standing a few moments inside the ship, she headed towards the Bridge. She wanted to check out the bridge first It was where she would spend most of her days, and nights.

After all these years at Starfleet Headquarters, Umi was actually looking forward to active duty... She had always enjoyed the craziness of her last position on a vessel. It was always fun for her, the late shifts, sleepless nights... that's the type of thing she lived for and loved.

Umi found the bridge and admired the setup. It was very clean, straight-forward, modern. That's how she liked it. She didn't like unnecessary panels and random frills and bells and whistles. It just didn't fit into the whole practicality of the situation. With a sigh and a smile, Umi turned on her heel and headed out into the hallways, where she wandered aimlessly for a while.

Inside the USS Skylark, Wandering Halls

After a few hours of just remembering everything that happened on the original ship,Kate decided to walk around the ship. Maybe she would walk into someone she knew,or maybe just the Captain. She always liked meeting superior officers quickly,so she could get it over and done with. It always made her nervous meeting the superior officers.She wasn't paying attention to where she was going and actually ran into someone she didn't know. She looked up and looked embarrassed.

"Umm,Sorry,I wasn't paying attention,ma'am."

Umi had to actually look up slightly at the woman who had run into her. She waited a moment, taking in the woman's countanance and features before smiling slightly.

"Kate Mulgrew." She extended her hand quickly. "I'm glad I ran into you... or rather you ran into me. Whatever way you want to look at it." She laughed lightly, watching the second officer. "Have you been waiting on the Skylark for long?"

"Not that long. I'm sorry,I don't know who you are or your position. Have you seen the Captain?" Kate stated.

Umi laughed lightly at this and pointed to herself.

"I'm the Captain." She bowed slightly to Kate. "Captain Umi Okashi Motokishru at your service." She watched Kate quietly, a small smile on her face. "I just arrived actually. I just saw the bridge and am getting used to the layout. I studied the architectural readouts last night but readouts aren't quite like the real thing."

"Oh,I...I'm really,really sorry for running into then. I suppose you know I'm your second officer and used to be the Captain on the original Skylark." Kate stammered.

Umi nodded.

"I am aware that you were captain on the last Skylark. I was rather surprised to realize that the original captain didn't take the position again." Umi clasped her hands behind her back and studied Kate for a few moments. "Have any of the other crew arrived yet? Or are we the first?"

Bridge, USS Skylark

Admiral Doug Spears, the age old wisened original Commander of the Skylark, steps onto the bridge. With a more roundish stomach now and a white beard, the Admiral does look his age. With a cigar in his mouth, his takes a puff, after pulling it out. Blowing smoke rings, he muses.

"I stall gat it, folks, it saems."

Smirking, Spears takes a seat, without introducing himself. He relaxes in his chair, puffing his cigar quite peacefully, further smoke holes erupting from the Admiral's mouth.

".....So......where's thas bird goin', eh? Geez, it's slow."

USS Skylark, Halls

"I was offered the Admiral position,but turned it down. I feel as though the deconstruction was my fault. I still haven't forgiven myself. As far as others arriving,I have no idea. I don't believe they have yet. We are early though.Any idea who took the Admiral position?"

Umi thought for a few seconds, trying to remember the information she had received. There was a pause between the two as Umi recalled the information.

"A certain Spears...Douglas I do believe." She glanced back at Kate. "I do believe I read he was on the original Skylark serving under you."

Kate laughed slightly.

"That he did. He tended to be a handful at times. He was my first officer. Just a warning, he likes cigars, on and off the bridge."

Umi laughed at this and nodded.

" Thank you for the information. I'm sure it will be of some use." She glanced up and down the halls quickly. "Are you hungry at all? I was thinking of finding something to eat and you are more than welcome to join me. I always enjoy company."

"I suppose I could join you. Umm,permission to speak freely? It's a personal matter."

"I was wondering how young you actually are?"

Umi laughed at this and watched Kate for a few moments.

"I'm thirty-three. Actually, I just turned thirty-three. I know, I was surprised as well that I was approached with the job was Captain. I'm not what you call decorated or celebrated, but I guess Starfleet saw something."

"Is this your first mission as a Captain? I was only thirty on mine. All crew was younger than me though. Everyone's older than you,I think. This can't be right. The youngest member of this ship is the Captain. What were they thinking? They couldn't have been."

Umi laughed at this and smiled quickly at Kate.

"I was thinking exactly the same thing. However, no, this isn't my firstion mission as a captain. This will be my second."

She glanced up and down the hall.

"Sometimes I wonder what Starfleet is thinking. I've worked for them for over 8 years now and I'm still confused half the time."

"I was 25 when I got my first position as a captain on a short mission that lasted about two years." Umi paused, trying to think of her career timeline to help explain. " I guess you could say I advanced rather rapidly in my career. I joined the Academy at 18. Graduated at 22 and then spent two years studying specifically in command at the academy.I spent one year on the vessel that I captained before being forced into the Captain position due to an emergency. It's not the best way to get the position, but it sufficed. I served on that vessel for three years, at which point Starfleet offered me a job in San Fransisco helping to run the academy and helping keep things in order. That's my history." She smiled at Kate.

"Wow. You say your not decorated,but I disagree. I was 18 when I joined the Acedemy also. Took me til I was 25 just to graduate. I actually got kicked out for a year. As I said,my first mission was on the original skylark at 30. These last 20 years,I've done nothing with Starfleet."

Umi smiled.

"By not decorated I mean I still have yet to get any commendations or medals. I guess I haven't shown valor yet. But eventually I figure I will manage to show STarfleet valor and bravery." She watched Kate. "Now... about getting food. Are you joining me Commander?"

"Yes,I will. In fact,the mess is right here. I have no medals either,just so you know."

Umi smiled and headed towards the Messhall.

"Well, then. I don't feel so alone now." She went up to one of the replicators and ordered a salad and waited for Kate to get her own food. "I am very interested in the mission of this vessel. Simple exploration is a very interesting mission indeed."

Kate just gets a french vanilla cappicino with a plain double cheesburger.

"That was the mission of the original. Ended up being an adventure. Who knows,maybe you'll get your first medal on this mission."

Kate then chose a table and sat down.

Umi sat down and watched Kate for a few moments before beginning to eat.

"Well, I am always up for adventures. I figure an interesting but slightly dangerous mission is better than a boring one." She smiled and glanced around messhall. "I must say, that this ship is exquisitely manufactured."

"Have you looked into my record yet? It's not that great of one. I was a little trouble maker. I was even told not to disobey you because your younger than me."

Umi laughed at this and smiled at T'Sa.

"Oh, well, I haven't looked into your file yet. But maybe I should." She took a bite of salad before pausing again. "Well, I'm sure you'll serve this vessel very well. I don't doubt your abilities at all."

Umi arched an eyebrow and watched Kate in silence for a few moments.

"Never in my career have I had a crewmember warn me that they might be a problem. You're a first." She pointed her fork at Kate in an emphatic gesture. "Very well. I shall keep an eye on you, Commander."
