These people aren't trying to win a debate on morality. They aren't going to say, "There - we made you as bad as us. We win!"
They want us dead.

Are you saying it's better to let a plot that kills a large number of innocent people be carried out rather than torture a suspected terrorist?

No, but I'm not so sure that compromising our principles to such an extent is the right way to go about it.

Not by torture. It's not necessary, and it won't come to that. But if it does, and it is really necessary--and I do mean really--in order to save lives, I suppose it might be permissible.

So how?
I'm all for the slow (weeks to months) method of coersion and rewards. But only when there is that much time, and the subject is compatible. We have to be prepared to use the methods that work.

Waterboarding on those that really have info that needs to get out, IMO. It works, and it's only on the borderline between torture and acceptable coersion.
