PostWed Jul 12, 2006 3:18 pm    Different races in the Borg collective

The Borg say that they're going to add a species distinctiveness to the collective. The collective gains knowledge from every species it assimilates. But do the individual drones ever retain any of the knowledge they had prior to assimilation? Say for Klingons their code of honor. I don't know if the Borg pick and choose which knowlege they want to integrate into themselves and which they want to disgard. Maybe they just use tactical knowledge they assimilate. What do you think?

I don't think they discard any knowledge, as it even in the smallest degree, adds to perfection...they just probably never use the mostly worthless stuff. While a part of the collective, no borg has really shown traits of their original race, but I think if Klingon honor was more perfect than the current way (which it is not), than that would be the new "attitude".

If that were so, wouldn't any old borg drone be able to become an individual and be just as much Annika Hansen as 7 of 9 is? If that's true, then there's nothing really unique about 7 of 9. I think the drone does indeed reatain at least something of their former selves. Maybe

Drones are not individuals, they do not have their own concience, thats why they are called Drones. Once they are assimilated they loose every aspect of their former selves. All they do is for the collective. Only through disconnection from the Collective can they regain their individuality.

They also do retain much of the knowlege they had. Seven was incredibly smart, and had a photographic memory, able to re call anything not long after she read it, saw it etc....

They retain what they knew yes, the only way they would lose that is if the borg removed the neural pathways that hold that particular memory. They just simply have no way of acting on their individuality because the collective is their mind... so to speak.

They retain what they know in the sense that every drone now knows what they knew...
