William Shatner wins Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Reported at TGL by Chris Howell
From StarTrek.Com:
It was a good night at the Emmys last night for Star Trek and related company. Enterprise added two more of the coveted statues to its trophy case, plus William Shatner picked up his first award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
....For the climactic award of the night, we can honestly report that Captain Kirk defeated Darth Vader Shatner beat James Earl Jones along with Martin Landau, Bob Newhart and Matthew Perry in the category Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He did so for his highly praised role as "Denny Crane" in The Practice, which has spun off into a new starring vehicle for Shatner this fall called Boston Legal.
The audience at the Shrine Auditorium reacted to Shatner's win with a bit of surprise, followed by a long and hearty ovation. "What took you so long?" Shatner remarked to the Academy as he accepted his award. After thanking everyone who voted for him along with everyone who didn't vote for him, he recognized Practice creator David E. Kelley for writing the part and inviting him to play it. "We gotta find out what that 'E' stands for," he added. This was Shatner's second Emmy nomination (after 3rd Rock from the Sun) and his first win.

Thanks for posting that, Solitary Poet.
I've only seen the first series of The Practice (the subsequent seasons didn't show up on terrestrial TV to the best of my knowledge) but I was impressed with it and I can only imagine how good a job Shatner did on it. This spin-off sounds interesting.
By the way, Shatner did a good show in the 80's called T.J. Hooker. He played Police Sergeant Hooker, a wise old-school patrol cop. It was a pretty good show with the right balance of action and social commentary. Shatner was very convincing in the role and like any good police show, it often showed the lonely and ugly side of policing. It also starred (amongst others) Adrian Zmed, Heather Locklear and James Darren. I'd recommend anyone checking out episodes if they haven't already. It's one show I'd definitely buy on DVD.

He's not an incredible actor, but still, this is pretty cool news.

You arrogant Romulan. I can't wait until The Borg assimilate you lot. The universe would be better without you.
(Just kidding of course, my friend)

I never liked him on anything other than Trek, because on Trek, he was supposed to be a bit overbearing, but I must admit, he is great on the Practice.

Yeah give credit where credit is due!Denny Crane is a great character! The kooky and unusual roles suit him well.I think he should have gotten a good role like that years ago after trek finished!
