PostTue Sep 05, 2006 8:11 pm    Election 2006 [Democrats Take Over Congress]

I thought we should have a main thread to talk about the upcoming elections.

Heres some good sites:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/latestpolls/
http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/
http://www.electionprojection.com/
http://www.myelectionanalysis.com/

IMO at the moment the GOP lose the house, keep the senate and lose a majority of Governorships

The GOP will lose the House, I predict, for this reason: Hardly anyone knows who their Congressman is and hardly anyone pays attention to the House. They pay far more attention to the Senate.
Because of this, voters, no doubt feeling disgruntled with the Republicans, will simply vote out their Congressperson in the next election by a political vote. Therefore, the House will be lost.

I predict that the governorships will be somewhat lost but the GOP will still maintain a majority. The Senate will see a loss of perhaps one or two Republicans and the party loss of a Democrat, as I predict Lieberman will win in CT. The GOP will maintain control of the Senate.

I can't see anyway how the GOP can keep a majority of state governorships.

Likely pickups
Ohio
New York
Massachusetts
Arkansas

Leaning Pickups
Maryland
Colorado

if all those went Dem, which is likely it would give:
GOP 22 -6
DEM 28 +6

However GOP may pickup Michigan, but still leaves 27 Dems.

Yeah, they may lose those states, but I doubt it. Colorado, I think, is pretty much in the bag, so long as Ritter can really be gotten out of the way. I think that if Beauprez gets his butt out there and starts to really campaign we can maintain my state.
My homestate (New York), on the other hand, is worthy of concern, but I think there's still a chance. I think a couple of the other states might be lost, but for the most part I think the GOP will retain its majority, though I'm not overly optimistic.

No your SUPER optimistic lol.

New York is a definite pickup, The Dem has a 60 point lead
Massachusetts is extremely likely, the republican can only muster around 25% in polls
Ohio was close but has widened. The Dem now has 15-20 point lead
Colorado is closer, Dem has about 10 point lead
Arkansas Dem has about a 20 point lead.

So if all those are won by the Dems, Dems have a majority

If they're won. I'm still optimistic, particularly here in Colorado.

It looks like Kathrine Harris has won the Republican Nomination tonight.

Very good news indeed. Landslide win for Sen. Bill Nelson in November now.

I'd like to see things change drastically. More than anything, I want a third party. The democrats and republicans are simply being disgusting in how they handle issues.

I agree, it's all about showing up the other party, and being better then someone else etc..., They dont seem real interested in helping the people.

Are you crazy, she is the worst possible GOP candidate. She will lose in a landslide.

They should have nominated someone else who could actually win.

Well, I don't know about winability, but I definitely think she is an excellent candidate and should be the next Senator of Florida. She would have my vote and I formally endorse and support her here and now..

Last 3 polls from Florida:

Poll Source Date Nelson (D) Harris (R)
Rasmussen September 5, 2006 57% 34%
Strategic Vision August 30, 2006 63% 20%
Zogby/WSJ August 28, 2006 52.4% 31.8%

I personally could never support her. I find her to be repulsive.

A lot can happen in two months' time, you know, especially with campaign season finally kicking into full gear.

Some new polls released today:

Quote:
New House Race Polls
Constituent Dynamics polled thirty key House races. The polls were automated telephone polls with relatively large samples of 1000 people per district. A detailed summary and methodology by district is available.

A cursory review suggests Democrats would have a very good Election Day if voters went to the polls today:

* Of 22 Republicans seats, Democrats pick up 13.
* Of 5 Democratic seats, none go to Republicans.
* Three additional polls in Indiana are still underway.
http://www.constituentdynamics.com/mw/2006/index2.html

Of course there a several seats which are very close which they have not polled. For example Mean Jeans seat, Ohio 2nd

Quote:
In Connecticut, Poll Finds Lamont Way Behind
A new Public Opinion Strategies (R) poll finds Ned Lamont (D) trailing Sen. Joe Lieberman (I), 51% to 35%, in the Connecticut U.S. Senate race. Republican Alan Schlesinger receives 4% of the vote, while 10% remain undecided.

Key finding: When asked which candidate is running a negative campaign, 40% say Lamont compared to 19% for Lieberman.

Remember the poll is done by a Republican polling company so take this with a pinch of salt.

Just saw another "Both Ways Bob" commercial. If Beauprez doesn't start getting his but out there and really put some effort into this campaign, I might just have to concede the loss of the Colorado governorship, which would be deadly. We cannot allow this state to fall into another Democratic reign. The Dems already control the House and Senate in the state. The governorship would only make things worse, assuming that the Dems maintain control in those areas.

God help this great state if the end result is the Dems maintaining the House and Senate and gaining the governorship.

In Florida, Another Snub for Harris
It certainly appears Republicans are ceding Florida's U.S. Senate seat to Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL). When asked by the Palm Beach Post if he will campaign for Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), Gov. Jeb Bush (R) said his "main focus" is the election of Charlie Crist (R) as his replacement as governor.

Poor Kathrine Harris. First the state party tries to get her out of the primary. Then when she wins they send a congrats email for every GOP candidate except Harris. Now Jeb Bush avoids the question of if he will campaign for her.

Poor Kathrine Harris

That's just horrible. The GOP is idiotic in my state too, only worse. It doesn't support any candidates beyond Senator and Governor, pretty much.

Super Tuesday, September 12

A whopping total of 9 primaries will be held this Tuesday, making it the clear "Super Tuesday" of the mid-terms. Be sure to check Election Projection. I will post a link to websites where the results will be posted as soon as I can Tuesday morning. For those keeping score, here are the states holding primary elections that day:

# Arizona - We'll finally know who will compete for retiring Congressman Jim Kolbe's seat. This is a good pick-up opportunity for the Democrats.

# Delaware - Not much happening here.

# Maryland - I'm excited about initiating tracking on both statewide races here. They are among the most intriguing in the nation. I'm especially looking forward to seeing polling data for the Senate race once Michael Steele's opponent is determined.

# Minnesota - Is Gov. Pawlenty vulnerable or not? That will begin to become clear after the primaries here.

# New Hampshire - Not much happening here. But after the primaries, if the two GOP-held House seats here become competitive (Charlie Cook rates them "Lean GOP"), it could be a long night for Republicans.

# New York - Will Tasini pull an upset over Clinton?

# Rhode Island - The marquis primary race in the nation will be decided here as Lincoln Chaffee tries to fend off a major conservative challenge from Mayor Stephen Laffey.

# Vermont - Bernie Sanders will do something he's never done before and probably will never do again - run as a Democrat and then refuse the nomination.

# Wisconsin - Interesting races in the general election. Not much happening in the primaries.

The interesting races are Maryland and Rhode Island.

I just learned the funniest little campaign factoid today.
A guy and a girl in my AP Gov class (cousins of one another) are a nephew and a neice, respectively, of Bill Ritter, the Democratic candidate for governor in this state! I just hope it doesn't really come to too much debate over the governorship. There's no way I'm gonna support Bill Ritter for governor, and none of the Republicans I know would even think about doing it
Sadly, he does have a chance, though.

Democratic Voters More Energized
In new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 51% of Democrats "express highest possible level of interest in the elections, compared with 43% of Republicans. Democratic edge on that harbinger of motivation to vote is up slightly from 51% to 46% edge in early September."

However, senior citizens back Democrats to control Congress by 48% to 43% -- smaller than partys overall edge among all voters. An earlier survey suggested seniors could be the key to victory in November.

Beauprez has moved up in his campaign and squashed Ritter in a debate this past week, but I'm starting to have doubts about his ability to win, unfortunately. You may yet me right, CJ, about the Colorado governorship falling to the Dems, which would be hell on Earth, giving them control of both branches...

Speaking of Colorado, A new poll out today.

Quote:
In Colorado, Ritter Maintains Big Lead
In Colorado's gubernatorial race, a new Denver Post poll shows Bill Ritter (D) way ahead of Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-CO), 50% to 35%.

"Ritter is beating Beauprez in every region of the state, including Beauprez's own congressional district... It also shows Beauprez's unfavorable rating at 40 percent, 8 percentage points higher than those who view him favorably. As a result, political watchers say Ritter should continue what he's doing, but they also predict the final four weeks of the campaign season will be ugly."

That's that one poll. There was another recent one that had Beauprez closing in on him, standing only a few points away. But I do worry about the race now.
