He should accept promotion. He was a great captain, but he's past his time and belongs behind a desk.

The man doesn't want to be promoted, he loves his job on the Bridge(On the series then...), and if he leaves he will probably will only do boring stuff. They can't force anyone to be admiral... or...

Fleet Admiral:"Im promoting you to admiral"
Captain:"NOOOO I don't want to!"
Fleet Admiral:"You must! Or else I'll put ya in the brig!"
*2 hours later*
Captain is crying on the bench of the brig

I'd say that untill he is too feeble he'd probably do more good as a captain than an admiral.

Agreed. Picard should be a captain as long as possible. With the loss of Sisko, great captains are few and apart. I would say that Picard can move on if Riker takes the Enterprise, but he won't since he took the Titan. Picard should stay there until he feels it is time to move on.

I think Picard can do more for Starfleet if he stays Captain than if he gets promoted. Besides, I think Picard was born to lead a ship, not file things.

I think you have to look at the character of a person.

Picard is an explorer and diplomat so while he is young enough (until he is say 80) he can command a starship.

When he reaches that age he should then take up a role as an admiral or even as an ambassador.

While someone like Picard is fully able to function as a captain keep them there.

Besides Admitrals in Star Trek are like our current day diplomats, people who were good enough to be successful in thier field and then move into politics but not good enough to actually be a good captain or senator or whatever.

while many of the pro Picard-admiral post are sound, i can't help but disagree... to an extent.

Picard is disciplined. With discipline comes a set of principles strictly adhered to. This will be a plus to starfleet, as an Admiral to the academy he can instill these ideals on cadets aspiring to be officers.

now to digress...

Picard is more useful to starfleet commandeering its flagship. He is the definition of staunch diplomacy. I admire his gait, although @ times he seems like a robot missing grease to joints.

His remarkable leadership, perhaps, is what caused Riker to sacrifice his career in starfleet by remaining stagnant within the Picard command.

He is equally poised to represent humanity during these first contact he's become accustomed to partaking in.

good discussion by the way.

or, provoke a premature offensive against the Romulans and simultaneously blitz the cardassians. Necessity is grounds for promotion right?

Admiral of the Fleet.... ohhh, obviously Data has proven himself as a competent Captain

Personally I dont think he should accept a promotion. As the old saying goes..."every great captain goes down with his ship!" And that is exactly how I feel Picard should go out. Sure, he is a great captain and great at the job he does, so much so that he COULD be a admiral of any kind, but if Picard is the kind of man we have known him to be...he will live by the old saying i mentioned earlier and go down with the Enterprise...

A boring position, yes. But a boring person, I don't think so.
They should at least promote him to Fleet Captain. And yes, that's a real rank. And even if they did put him behind a desk, he could at least commandeer a shuttle and take control of any ship he wants.

fleet capatin is only in time of war, just like fleet admiral, unless in special circumstances, like the 107th fleet patroling the alpha / beta quadrant border

It'd be a waste of a good Captain, and honestly, I can't see Picard being happy with a desk job in San Francisco (or else where). Even being some sort of ambassador, or whatever, if he wasn't on the bridge of a Starship, he'd probably decide his career as a Starfleet Officer has come to an end.

PostFri Jul 24, 2009 8:34 pm    Take it in the rear... admiral

Do you guys even know what a Rear Admiral is? Picard, just like Kirk, has shown unswerving ability in command of a starship. That's where he seems happiest and that's where he should stay.
