Quote: | Original Trek To Receive New CG Effects for HDTV and DVD
The original Star Trek is being remastered for future high defintion television syndication as well as eventual release on HD-DVD with new high-definition CG effects.
The Digital Bits reported the story in its Rumor Mill column, which reported previously that CBS Video, which now owns the Star Trek DVDs, was planning to retransfer the original series from film to HD-DVD. All of the Star Trek feature films will be rereleased for HD release as well.
Bill Hunt noted that he learned from industry sources that CBS is redoing many of the original series special effects using new CG techniques. "Specifically, they're re-doing all of the spaceship shots," he wrote. "This to me is a very exciting idea...in principle. As anyone who saw the Mirror Universe episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise will tell you, the old TOS ships look awfully damn good in new CG."
However, Hunt added, CBS is doing this CG work in-house and it is not yet known whether any of Star Trek's longtime effects wizards have worked on the new versions of the episodes. "I tried contacting CBS and their DVD distributor, Paramount, on this subject last week, but there was basically no comment," stated Hunt.

None of the places around here rents season sets, that I know of anyways, I haven't ever seen it. Not to mention Renting annoys me becuase the discs are never taken care off, always get smudges, scratches etc... But that's off topic

Quote: | CBS Releases Details On Remastered Star Trek
CBS Paramount Domestic Television has officially confirmed the planned release of digitally remastered high-definition episodes of the original Star Trek, with all new special effects and rerecorded music.
Michael Logan in TV Guide reported in the Insider column that on September 16th, the first of the Star Trek shows will return to syndication for the first time in 16 years, with computer-generated effects specially designed for this release. "We're taking great pains to respect the integrity and style of the original," said longtime scenic art supervisor Michael Okuda, who has worked on numerous Star Trek motion pictures and the spinoff series for nearly 20 years. Trek veterans Denise Okuda and David Rossi worked on the episodes as well.
"Balance of Terror", the first Romulan episode ever shown, will be the first of the remastered episodes aired; they will be shown out of order from their original sequence. CGI people have been added to largely empty ships and starbases, and a more detailed view of Earth from space replaces the original in "Miri." In addition, Alexander Courage's theme music has been recorded in stereo with new vocals, and William Shatner's "Space, the final frontier..." voiceover has been remastered digitally.
StarTrek.com provided more details, stating that the episodes would air on more than 200 stations and that the first batch were selected as fan favorites. The official site noted that the Enterprise and other starships originally filmed with models would be replaced by CGI-created ships, and the Enterprise and planets in the main title sequence are being given "depth and dimension." Graphics of the galactic barrier, alien planets and scenic backgrounds will also be redone.
StarTrek.com states that at the present time, there is no confirmation if or when the episodes might be available eventually on DVD or other formats.
Creation Entertainment has announced that at two upcoming conventions featuring Shatner (Kirk) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock), in Chicago and Sacramento, attendees will be treated to an exclusive sneak peek of the remastered episodes along with behind-the-scenes footage of their production.

Pretty cool, but remember not to hotlink
To be honest though, I had to study the images to see the differnce, but I can see at this rate, MA is rasing to much of a trouble over it, the effects and the shots seem to be the same, just....CGI

Those are impressive. yeah, a slight disapointment with in house works, they don't have as advanced stuff for effects, but they are still pretty cool

Does anyone else think that the CGI ships look more fake than the old model ships?
And how about that "new" theme song... a little too much echo in Kirk's voice and in the "swoosh" of the starship going by.

Yeah...I haven't seen it yet, but they went in house -cheaper. You get what's paid for. Another Company offered to do it, even did some test shots, which were impressive. Ah well...

I'm seeing alot of complaints, not good. I guess I am easy to please the pics I saw were nice. ONce again, fan expectations were HIGH, disapointment abounds, lots of complaing. The powers that be, are not the only problem in trek. I will admit, going in house was probably a poor choice, look at "In a Mirror, Darkly" VERY good episodes, GREAT effects, also.

I guess I am displeased with the CGI because of some of the blatant errors. For example, Spock says in Catspaw that the planet has no cloud formations, and the new CGI planet is full of clouds.
Also, all of the planets turn WAY too fast... if a planet turned as fast as the ones on the new CGI episodes do, you'd get seasick beaming down.
One more issue... the soprano they got to redo the music for seasons 2 and 3 (nevermind that they should NEVER have redone the music in the first place) has a very different tonal quality from the one in the original recording. This is a mistake that was obviously made by someone who knows nothing about music. The Soprano sound in the original music had a much darker sound than the person they got to sing for the new opening.

I'm no purist but I prefer the original series as just that, original. Maybe there's just a fun factor when the 60's FX kick in.

I have to agree with this. I am just not sure how believable it would be anymore to see CG in the new episodes. I am expecting to see hockyness and relish this series for it. Even if they integrate it smoothly, I just feel like it will still seem off in my unconscious mind.
