The first main captain to have her own hairpiece and keep it through 7 seasons.
Kirk wore a wig through TOS.
Picard only had a little along the sides.
Sisko shaved his head and gained a real "bad-ass" look.
Archer, well... I did say the "first".

Her own hairpiece? Meaning, her own hair for all 7 seasons?
If that's what you mean, then it's not true. The long hair and bun was a wig. She had short hair the entire time. It wasn't until season 4 that it was her real short hair...
If that's not what you meant, then my bad, and please elaborate.

So locking someone in the cargobay while tied to a chair in a room with killer aliens coming through a rift so she can get information from him is minimal violence? Huh. |
Yes! cause without the info they couldve died. and now it's a typical dilemma: One mean old alien vs the good crew... hmm ill go for the mean old alien

Not that she even thought of it, but what about all of the people that "died" as a result of species 8472 getting destroyed. Tuvix, although mentioned twice, was definately murdered.
And to the topic of the question...before I even opened the thread, I had in my mind, "Coffee". I just don't find the woman thing that important. There have been other women in Star Trek, and I don't see that one rank up constitutes novelty. And I would probably consider her the captain with the worst relationship with her crew.

- I totally agree...if it were a female Captain, back the 60's...maybe. And her supposed to be the very FIRST female Captain in SF.

- I can see where your getting that, with the Senior staff I say no, but with the rest of the crew...I think I'd tie her with Picard.

No one ever said it was after TOS before there was a female captain, we just never saw it.
As for Janway? Being a hippocrit, leading Chakotay on with mixed signals, and her coffee obsession.

Nothing was ever said about Janeway being the first Female Captain in Starfleet. She was just the first female captain of a Trek Series...a shocker on all parts when they decided to do it...because she was...the first.

Yanno what? My sweetie died three years ago waiting for a new kidney. I'd love to have him back, more than you can imagine. We'd been together a very long time.
But I would not kill someone else--another sentient being--to get him back. Just as I wouldn't have killed someone to get the kidney to save him.
T'Pel would not want her husband back. It would be against Vulcan ethics and wholly illogical.
The fact that the Doctor couldn't perform the procedure because it violated his ethical subroutines shows that performing the procedure was against any standard of medical ethics.
Janeway executed a man to *attempt* (there was no guarantee it would work) to restore 2 who essentially died in a transporter accident. Completely unacceptable.

And actually, the short hair is a wig, too.
They started filming the pilot with Kate's own hair--there are pictures around of her like that. TPTB decided her hair was too fine, and went with the wigs.

Yeah but her hair was short though. It wasn't as long as the way they portrayed it on the show. So it wasn't all a wig for when her hair went short was it? I'm sure if they thought her hair was too fair, then they just use like maybe hair pieces to make it look thicker...but can't that already be done just with a stylist just with normal hair? After all...remember the 80's?

I'll agree that her shorter hair was probably a wig, but I think when they went short with her hair in Season 4, that it was her real hair...God, I can't stand to think of Kate Mulgrew with her hair that short, but it looked alot more real than her hair later in the series...
But another question, is that if her short hair later in the series is a wig, then how come it kept changing lengths? Because by Season 5 her hair was more shoulder length, and then when we reached "Timeless" in the same season her hair was crossing below her shoulders...ever so slightly, mind you, but it did. It was distinct, and you could tell that her hair was growing, and she was about time for a trim...at least I think so...
I would have preferred that they used her own hair, as they originally filmed in "Caretaker." I've seen a couple of those pics and it looked SO much better than the wig...Now, I particularly liked the wig they used in "Caretaker," because it just looked natural. You could tell it was a wig, but it looked more natural than the wig-buns they used later...But I would have preferred her own hair though...

Sorry to butt in but when I saw Kate Mulgrew in London she was asked about her hair and she said that it was too annoying having people keep messing with her hair when it was long trying to keep it perfect so she decided to have it cut off.

Yeah I read about that because I heard that she's asked that question a lot at cons. She said that they finally decided to just let her have her own hair down because they were always fussing with it.

Can you blame her?! LOL...I mean, as if those makeup artists don't mess around with people's own REAL hair, let alone trying to make fake hair do what they want...having to put up with it for 3 1/2 seasons...yeesh!!! lol.
I didn't know that she was the one who was moving for them to get rid of the long hair...but at the same time it doesn't surprise me at all...

^ Kate's a little contradictory when it comes to costumes and makeup. She made a few snide comments about Jeri and the Borg outfit that made her pass out. She said it's part of the job of an actor and not professional to complain. (I'll assume she didn't realize that compressing the carotid artery is a serious health risk).
Yet she complained a lot about padded bras and wigs.
That's one of the loveable things about Kate. Her contradictions make her wildly entertaining. You never know what she'll come up with next.

I never said she complained about the wig and such...but at the same time, if someone were to joke around with it, it's not necessarily complaining...I joke around about alot of things that bug me, but I can't change it and such so I laugh about it...
And she's right, obviously, that it is part of the job of an actor...lol

Um, the costume issues that Jeri complained about (and she didn't really complain, she *passed out* and required oxygen) and Kate felt Jeri was being "unprofessional" were due to a costume misfit (the neck was too tight) that compressed her carotid artery and caused a lack of blood flow to the brain.
That can be life-threatening. It is not a "part of the job" to have a stroke for the show.
And yes, Kate has complained many times about excessive hair, makeup and costuming issues. She's said it's the one thing about acting she can't stand--she doesn't like to be physically fussed over.

That's what happens when you act. She should have really been prepared for that.
