I'm trying to stay away from trailers and previews of Serenity because I think the less I know about it coming into the more the more I might be able to enjoy it. I watched one of the first trailers and saw more than I should already. I've pieced together an imaginary plot that mainly involves River. In the TV show, River was a broken helpless person.... the trailer makes her out to be completely different. I'm not sure I like this character change.

She wasn't helpless in "War Stories". Or "Objects in Space". Remember those?

SciFi is airing one of their "Inside Look" things for the Serenity movie later this month. Should be interesting.

She wasn't the girl doing roundhouses in a bar fight either.

"If someone tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back". Yeah, maybe I shouldn't let this line totally turn me off, (Though it has so far).

It's better in context.

Saffron: "Are....are you going to kill me?"
Mal: "What? What kind of crappy planet is that, kill you?"
Saffron: "In the maiden home, I heard tell of men who weren't pleased with their wives---"
Mal: "Well I ain't them! And don't you ever stand for that. Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back! Wife or no, you are no one's property to be tossed aside. You got the same rights as anyone, to live and try to kill people. People who're.......that's a dumb planet!"

I always liked the way in which River's character was unpredictable. Whilst you had expectations of the ways other characters might react to situations (Jayne: Violence, Wash: Wit, etc.), River was constantly changing from the quiet, frightened girl at the start of the series to an increasingly confident one at the end ("No power in the 'verse can stop me"). And going by what happened in "War Stories", I think River could have been capable of anything - including bar-fighting.

I don't think River was saying that with confidence. She thought it was a game, and she was just echoing the words Kaylee said when she reclaimed the apple at the beginning.

Yeah you're right there - confident was probably the wrong word. More that she is...becoming more able if you like. It's hard to put into words. In my mind, you can see her behaviour changing and 'evolving' if you like.

AAAAAAaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh! We need more Firefly! I have a faint feeling that the 14 episodes and the movie won't last as long as they should in my rerun-watching-ness.....

So many questions left unanswered!!!! And now we'll never know. there's got to be some way to get it back. Even a mini series on SciFi would be sweet. The missing sixish months between the end of the show and the movie?

You are so right, Samster! God damn this was an amazing show. I don't see how it was cancelled when it has so much of a following.

^It was aired on Fox. Need I say more?

They aired it out of order for starter which confused a lot of people, and then just yanked it. Idiots.

yeah... stupid *beep* at FOX. But we're figuring... hey... now that it's on DVD and with the movie... it's a kind of comeback... so.... new show The Life and Times of Malcolm Reynolds? I think so.

Yeah, it says a lot for the show to have a movie. It's rare that t.v. shows ever are made into movies. Esp. ones that were cancelled. So I say, "Suck it, FOX!"

[Inara's] Hidden Past?

In the DVD commentary a hidden storyline concerning Inara is alluded to. This storyline was not developed past the 'hints' stage. The commentaries mention two clues: one is the syringe that Inara looks at in the pilot episode, and the other is the conversation she has with Simon in the episode "Out of Gas", specifically the line "I don't want to die at all".

Another hint is also shown in the episode Heart Of Gold, at the point when Nandi tells Inara that she doesn't "look a day older." Finally, another clue is given in Bushwhacked, when Inara tells Simon that "we're all running away from something." Note how this contrasts with her defensive exclamation in Out Of Gas: "I'm not running away from anything."

This unresolved plot may have something to do with the reason Inara left such a prominent position on Sihnon and chose to travel the rim.

One theory states that Inara is using some kind of drug to maintain her youthful appearance, and that she is older than she looks.

I had been trying to think of the reason Joss Whedon really made that syringe for. Never thought of this possibility. That'd be crazy and kind of creepy.

The syringe was for basic inoculations (sp?) all companions are required to take.

Nope, that was a different syringe. Its the one in Serenity part teo that she takes ot when they're passing the Reavers. In the commentary Joss says that everyone thinks that it's some Companion suicide drugs, but he said he had something else in mind for what it really was, but doesn't feel like telling anyone.

Ahhh... that's right. Well of course there's some mysterious resson she lefft her house position... I do wish we could have found out what it is. I also always wanted to know the deal with Book. He was rather mysterious as well. Perhaps if we knew more about him, he wouldn't be as boring.

We figure, my friends and I, that he was just some operative with the Alliance, like the guy in the movie, but before the war started is when he went to the Abbey, and he was there the whole duration of the war, which is why he still thinks that the Alliance is good... because when he left them, they were. I don't know... It hink I'd still find him boring then.... unless he had some way cooler story. I've always been most interested in Inara's past.

I think Book's past MUST be way cooler. Otherwise he's just... lame. And Joss dosn't do lame.

Yeah Inara fascinates me.

Both Inara and Book had pasts that were far too unresolved for my liking. I really really want to know what he was planning. And now I'm going to have to go back and watch those episodes to find those hints o.o

In other news, I now have the DVDs of the series and movie ^-^

I think the Operative's story is Book's story.

He used to work for them, believing the evil he committed was in the service of a greater good; at some point, his eyes were opened to the truth, and he retreated to the monestary at that point.
