Now if you go back to my last post one of the replys were "you have no proof" Well the following info was copied from startrek.com
04.21.2006
BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce "Trek XI"
J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and possibly direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")
Although there isn't an official Paramount press release announcing the movie, it is a confirmed project under development with a 2008 release date targeted. Word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning (April 21) in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III." STARTREK.COM will keep you up to date on all official statements as they are released.
According to Variety, the proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space. UPDATE 04.27.06: Abrams has since indicated this may not be the case; see this article for his recent comments.
Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, are cited as being producers on "Trek XI." This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendresen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.
This announcement is exciting news, and we look forward to following developments on this project every step of the way!
See proof!!

Dude, welcome to STV!
If you had explored the Forum better, you would see that there is already a topic in General Trek about this. But, still... The news is pretty cool!!

Oh no!
Not another retro project where established Trek history is screwed up.
If this project goes through, it wil definitely be another nail in the coffin for Star trek.

Yes! At last! Me and Lynx agree on something!
Yep...I whole-heartedly agree with you on that, Lynx. This project would totally kill ST, IF they go with the Academy idea... Luckily, the plot isn't nailed down...yet. It could still be anything. I have my fingers crossed.

It don't help star trek none where people trash the movie before a plot is actually chosen, either. just to let you all know that.

I was referring to the Academy idea. The plot could still be anything, but, seeing as J.J. Abrams is a TOS fan...I've got a pretty good idea of what era this movie is going to take place in...and I would like to say that the Era of TOS is over and should stay that way. Give the fans what they want, Abrams! (Or...at least me and a few others, eh?)

I still stand by my words I know people that were convinced they'd hate nememsis before it was announced the script was even settled on. A couple ate their words, some didn't even see the movie at all. That hurt the movie right there (That and piracy) along with other things, So in short the plot and the script and actors dont make for a horrible movie alone, it helps though

I'm not going to protest against the movie. Hey! I liked Nemesis! *sniff* Data...
Anyhoo...
I'm still looking forward to it...I just hope that the makers of the film forget the word "prequel"...

I hope that they will leave Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the others where they are. Those characters have been portrayed so good by actors like Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and the original TOS cast. I don't think the TOS fasn will accept other actors in what seems like a lame attempt to copy Star Wars and make another retro project. The failure of "Enterprise" should had been a warning for those in charge.
Stop milking the TOS cow and come up with something new instead, something that can bring back the fans to Star Trek! My proposal is a new series in the 24th century wher some of the old favorites from TNG, DS9 and Voyager can show up from time to time. That would unite the fans of those shows and bring back the fans Star trek so desperately need.
By the way, nice to be on the same side as you LaForge! Wonders never cease to happen!

Since, everyone knows I'm a Voyager fan by now, most of those are the chars I'd like to see... PLUS some characters from DS9, but which ones, is the question. Quark? Sisko? Odo? Bashir? O'Brien? Kira? etc....
Quark would add some humor...
I'd like to see Odo most of all, in it. Gotta have him if Quark is in it.
From TNG, possibly LaForge, then their could be a good argument between him and Torres, on how to fix the Warp drive before the Borg or Species 8472 can blow them into the next universe.
Otherwise, I wouldn't like to see a retro type of movie, either.
Whoever plays Spock or Kirk, wouldn't be good enough. Most fans would rather have the real thing, not counterfeits, IMO.
That would be like when Bruce Lee's son played Bruce Lee. Didn't work.

NO RETRO!!! I mean, it's bad enough that they're even CONSIDERING a movie AGAIN in the past...but the fact that they're choosing to possibly portray the legendary Kirk and Spock with DIFFERENT people that couldn't possibly achieve the level of depth that Nimoy and Shatner achieved with their ORIGINAL characters! It disgusts me!

I agree the Tos series was great and they should not try to replace the actors to continue its legend.

To make movies in the future will be a hard challenge:technology, new database, regrouping the entire 3 star trek crews that are older, and future scripts that will be hard to write about since there is no data on the future until the enterprise-j -sphere builders war incident in the 26th century.Even if the crews were to get back together what would it be about? There is no clue for a storyline.Give the technology and ideas 50 years and they will be ready for the future.
The past is already in the database and technology is there to make the movies so why not reconstruct the past and go over history that hasnt been shown or explained yet by any series.

Be lucky they are coming out with a star trek movie at all, they could have easily stopped star trek all together. As for different star trek movie charcters in the old series, it makes sense, william shatner, leonard nimoy, and deforrest kelly,(characters of our present time) are either to old or dead.So why would they edit picks of them or play them in this movie when a new crew can be put in? Its how other series and movies were put together by new characters.

Yeah when I was at Comic Con in San Diego recently, they had a Star Trek: 41 Years and Counting panel discussing the future of Star Trek. CBS Paramount is taking over the series and Rick Berman won't be involved in anything since everyone hates what he's done. J.J. Abrams however still doesn't want to disclose any real information about the movie, like whether or not it features a young Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy because it's still very new with the script and everything. They had writers and producers there as well as the head of Startrek.com so I got first hand knowledge! It was awesome. Very interesting as well. For anyone who also likes anime/manga. Tokyo Pop is making a Star Trek Manga based on the original series coming out sometime in Sept. I believe, which should be interesting. CBS Paramount seems to be wanting to do some good things with Star Trek but nothing is written in stone yet, except for some news on the movie.

Why NOT go back? Easily answered. It's been done. And by going BACK and "redoing" everything, or "adding" more to the already established timeline would undermind everything that's already been established and seen.

I would have preferred this as well! No movie is better than what we hear is being proposed...Yes, I understand they can't use the original people. Duh, they can only get older...not younger...but here is my reason that I've already given in two other topics...It serves well to be here as well...LOL...
Voyager2004 wrote: | This totally sucks. Whoever's idea this was, needs to be shot and buried. They're getting EXTREMELY retarded with this now! I mean, it doesn't really bother MUCH that they're not continuing on after the "Nemesis" timeline, but what bothers me is that they're going to the Academy days of two loved characters...It's stupid...
Because, we all know how funny Kirk talked on the show, right? (This is the actor's side of things I'm looking at now...) I believe, that as an actor, Shatner made Kirk talk like that for a REASON! That Kirk for some reason or another, talked like that...
But instead, we're now going to get some stupid retarded young idiot that's not going to give a whoopin-hollar about that. He's just gonna do it because "That's what I remember William Shatner doing on the show!" Therefore getting rid of the entire purpose that Shatner had for allowing his character to talk like that...
I dunno, but it's just stupid...from an actors point of view, it's stupid to go into the younger days of two already WELL established characters...

I was disappointed to hear that the 2008 movie was going to be in the past, i was hoping voyager or ds9 would have a movie and continue on into the future because thats what star trek is all about. If they would thought to have played this movie with the old series then it would have been great, but its not something i would want to see now.

DS9 and Voyager both deserve a movie. If the next movie is about the past, I am not going to watch it definetly.

They should make a movie about the future Trek. With the temporal stuff and all. Cause I've seen enough of the past. And I'm totally mad with recreating Kirk! I mean Shatner did perfect and if you gonna change it the view of Kirk will change totally. Though Shatner trashes Trek fans, I think he should stay the only kirk.

AMEN!
This IS garbage. I don't give a wooden nickel about the storyline, or the history, BUT YOU CANNOT MESS WITH THE CHARACTERS THAT BUILT IT. Kirk IS Shatner. Spock IS Nimoy. McCoy is dead, jim. Paramount needs to make things new again. Or realize they have Voyager, and DS9, as well as... ugh... I'd hate to think I'd prefer an ENTERPRISE movie over this. And I hated enterprise the entire damn time.
If they are going to start trashing trek by screwing up characters with actors who haven't a clue how to act((matt daemon... UGH)), then just leave it be, OR EVEN BETTER, wait until they CAN think up something new.

I don't like the idea of going back in time when you are going forward in a series. I think it would be interesting to see the early days, however I'd much rather continue the voyages of Enterprise-E in the movie franchise.
Maybe a mini series, but as a movie? No thank you, however if this does go through I will watch it.

I wonder if the naysayers ate their words after the movie came out and grossed more than any Star Trek film ever and the fact that they're already making the sequel means that it wasn't... what did they say?
