PostMon Jul 24, 2006 6:50 pm    Computers

I know we've had a few chats on computers, but none recently. What computers do you all use? OS?

I just got a new machine at the begining of the summer and I love it. I got a MacBook Pro (OS-X Tiger) with a 100GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM, 2.16GHz, 15.4 inch screen.

If I ever own a PC again it'll probably be a home built one running an open source OS. It probably won't happen in the next few years though.

An old stinkin thing (PC) which I unwisly downgraded the OS to ME when it came out. Even 96 (what I had before) would have been better. That gives you an idea of how old the darn thing is. And its an e-matchine the worst thing ever, it was pretty bad when it came out. The worst of the worst they make today are far better.

^Hm. It's still possible to upgragde bits and pieces of it, if you feel it's worth it. One thing you could do is install a different OS, if you're comfortable with it there's Ubuntu which is a fantastic open source one. Windows 96? I think you mean 98...which is decent considering its size. If you have an install disk, you could always restore it.

CaptainPat: dang. And you're wasting it with XP? Seriously though, I don't think I could get a better machine unless I built my own.

I have tried to switched to UBUNTU but i got yelled at, cause some of the programs my classes uses don't work on linux, Plus i was not supposed to mess with the os at all till its mine when i get out of the academy.

Plus XP Pro handles dual cores better that XP Home, or Mac

That makes sense. Technically it isn't yours yet.

XP Pro handles dual cores better than Mac? Where'd you find that out? I ask because my Mac has a dual core and it seems to work beautifully.

I mis phrased what i wanted to say, XP Pro handles dual cores better than MAC when it comes to the programs i use like: Lightwave 9, 3DS Max 8, After Effects, and so on. Multieamedia programs genuily run better on dual cores with XP Pro, just becuase most major studios use Windows and not Mac so most of the software companys that makes those multidemedia softwares focuses more on XP than Mac. Did that explain it better?

Since I'm not planning on doing any 3-D stuff I'm not worried about that. But the general impression I got of Windows v. Mac in terms of graphics (and I've heard this from people who've majored in computer graphics, and work in the field) Mac has always been better.

In terms of the amount of programs designed to run on the OS, simply because of their numbers there are going to be more for Windows.

At least that's the impression I've gotten.

Yes and No, Just really depends on the program/programs you use and plan on using. Like me for example i strongly prefer Ligthwave for my 3D App, but some thing on Lightwave does not support dual cores on macs atleast in my experinces: lightwave on Mac does take full advanagtes of the Dual Cores. So really it just comes down to what you want to do, what you can do, what app you plan to use and so on.

^Yeah, then I'm not going to have any difficulties. As I said, I'm not looking for 3D, what I'm interested in is purely two dimentional

Squiggy: I've got a similar machine in my basement, actually, yours is probably a lot better and newer. Upgraded it to Windows 98, it's got an adapter plug in back for the mouse (modern mice have a different plug), and a literal power switch. I have yet to check the harddrive space, but I'm sure it's abysmal. I love that machine

trust me the thing is over 11 years old...its not worthit. I'd have to rubuild the whole, to which I might as well start from scratch. And sorry, I mistyped, it was 95 before I downgraded to ME. I swear it's the most messed up OS ever. I thought about installing a new OS but I'm moving in the end of the summer and I think I'm going to end up finally getting a new computer. I could use a laptop at school, and I think I am finally going to stop being cheep.

I have a Powerbook G4, 100 GB. She's a very kind and beautiful machine. Vaguely wish I would've just gotten the Macbook Pro, but only because of the built in camera. For my purposes Vashea (her name, because I love her) is perfect. I only just switched to mac and I'm very pleased I did. I still have a desktop running windows, but we don't talk to her much. She's a little whiney and needs work... which I'm not in the financial position to provide.

I have a old tulatin P3 system which is more server spec than workstation spec. Most recent additions are the cisco 837 adsl router and soundblaster audigy 2 zs. It's really time for an upgrade though. My next system will be 10 grand of hardware probably. 4 Nvidia flagship cards in sli, for example.

I also really would like the dell 24" widescreen.

Ok, my laptop has decided to get amusing.
It now is equipped with a program that can diagnose it's abilities, and abilities of other computers on the network.
Here's what it thinks of itself:
Computer ID: Idiot
Available Operating systems: Windows 1.0 through 3.0, Windows 3.9((Windows 95, but it calls it 3.9 for reasons I don't understand)) and windows 98 SE.
Launchable Operating systems: Windows 98 SE
Unlaunchable Operating systems: Windows 1.0 through 3.0, windows 3.9.
Reason for unlaunchable Operating systems: The following drivers are not compatible with the above listed operating systems:
12,340,000 KB Hard Drive
24 X CD rom
Unknown Display Device((Trident Cyberblade Agi))
Unknown Display Adapter((Generic laptop display panel))
Unknown Power Source((Battery))
Unknown Port Device((PCMCIA card))
Unknown Device((USB PORT))

It says these things are unknown only because that is what those operating systems would call them, lol.

It then diagnose all 3 other computers on my network:
System ID: ((Network Administrator)) Desktop-Wireless
Operating System: Windows 98 SE
Available Operating Systems: Windows 98 SE, windows 5.1((Windows XP))
Launchable Operating Systems: Windows 98 SE
Unlaunchable Operating Systems: Windows 5.1
Reason for unlaunchable operating systems: Windows 98 SE has determined that windows 5.1 will consume more system resources((Random access memory)) then this system has available. Therefore, windows 98 SE has deemed it an inferior((I know... amusing...)) operating system, and has disabled it.

My sister's boyfriend and I laughed for like an hour when that showed up.

System ID: Trayce ((My sister's desktop))
Available Operating Systems: Windows 1.0 through 3.1, Windows 3.9, Windows 98 SE, windows 4.0((ME)), Windows 4.1((2K)), Windows 5.0((NT)), Windows 5.1((XP))
Launchable Operating Systems: Windows 5.1
Unlaunchable Operating Systems: All remaining
Reason for unlaunchable Operating Systems: As Windows 5.1 is capable of emulating any given operating system listed, it has deemed them un-necessary and disabled them.

System ID: Laughing Cadaver ((Sister's Boyfriend's Laptop))
Available Operating Systems: Linux, all editions, Windows 1.0 though 3.1, Windows 3.9, Windows 98 SE, windows 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, and 5.1.
Launchable Operating Systems: Linux, Windows 5.1
Unlaunchable Operating systems: All remaining.
Reason for unlaunchable Operating systems: As windows 5.1 is capable of emulating any given operating system listed, is has deemed them unecessary, and disabled them. Windows 3.9 and lower has also determined that the drivers used for windows 5.1 cannot be used with said operating systems.
Unavailable Drivers:
250,000,000 KB HD
Unknown Device((USB port))
Unknown Device((Wireless Optical Mouse))
Unknown Device((48 X Cd/Dvd-R burner))
Unknown Power Source((Battery 1))
Unknown Power Source((Battery 2))
Unknown Device((Intel Duo Core Processor Chip))
Unknown Device((Intel built-in wireless local area network card))
In adition, the following drive has programs on it that cannot be run in windows 3.9 or lower:
C:
D:

We kinda looked at that for a minute, and went... "So... why exactly are all these operating systems THERE if they can't DO anything with the computer they are on?"
When he tried to install windows 95 on his laptop, it came up with this:
System Requirements:
RAM: 2 mb
Processor Speed: 486 Mhz
Hard-Disk Space: 700 MBs
Current System Statistics:
RAM: 586 Mb
processor Speed: 4,800 Mhz Combined.
Hard Disk Space: 250,000 MBs.
Then the installer "performed an illegal action" because it caused a script error in "windows 5.1.exe"
Tell me I'm not insane when I say this looks wierd.

If you could give the memory of those computers.... Indeed Windows XP uses a lot more memory then any of the older Windows.

The first computer you mentioned seemed kind of old, considdering it has a CD-Rom player and only a 12 GB Hard Drive.

Also, its logical the older Windows version can't identify certain systems on the computers like USB ports and a DVD player. Those windows where never built to understand that since that didn't exist back when they where made.

CD-rom and 12GB isn't that old! I've got a machine that's got a CD drive and a 3GB hard drive...And it worked the second to last time I tried to use it

This one is a Compaq Presario FP 5315, but my actual computer is a 4 year old Dell one. When I get my room redecorated and everything sorted out I'm going to upgrade it with help from my brother- bigger RAM, better graphics and sound cards etc...
And then I'm planning on setting up a home network.

It is old, and souped up to it's best. lol.
It's a compaq presario 1200 xl power-smart edition.((Type run 1998-2000))
I've actually upgraded it to a 24 x cd rom, lol.
The 12 gb hard drive, when I bought it second hand, from a computer shop, was not FAT 32, and I got a good deal because he thought it was only a 4 gig hard drive.
The PCMCIA slot has an annoying tendency to fry the old-style pcmcia cards, but otherwise, well, let's put it this way, it's running the internet. What more do I need?
Not to mention I bought it second hand for less than three hundred bucks...

I'm so naive thinking everybody with a computer has the best of the best. I'm just spoiled i guess.

Hell, i even think 40GB hard disk space sin't enough and i also want a 512MB video card. and water cooling
