I don't care. It was still un-American. It's "Truth, justice, and the American Way," not "Truth, justice, all that stuff."

Maybe he's supposed to be a world-hero instead of an American hero.

But he's not a world hero. He was designed in 1929 as an American hero and he's always been an American hero. Just look at his colors, for instance, and the phrase he's ALWAYS had, until now ("Truth, justice, and the American Way"). And that's what disturbs me, this liberal, elitest, "let's not offend anyone," "America's not really that great" ideology that I get from most in the media and film industry, and I, for one, am tired of it.

We all know that symbols change. Today it would make sense to aim for a unified world hero instead of an American hero. It's stupid to change such a famous tag-line, though. I don't care much eitherway, as I haven't seen this movie. I suppose I'll reserve judgement until I watch it.

There's really no more to it, actually. That's it.
And fine, let's have a unified world hero, but not Superman. Superman is an American hero and has been for nearly 80 years. It should remain that way, not be changed to some kind of world hero because of some accomodating, anti-"offensive" agenda.

But the movie was excellent otherwise.

My only complaint is when the Daily Planet Chief says (and it's in the commercials, so not a spoiler), "Truth, justice, all that stuff." I was disgusted by that and it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Its to sell more tickets. Some crazy people in other countries will refuse to see it because of that, sounds stupid but its true. The key is to make the most money, that's all they care about. Remember the world is increasingly anti-American and most of the revenue comes from overseas.

Even though i do think Hollywood very liberal, i think this is scraping the bottom of the barrel of things to complain about. Its 2 words. There are a million better things to complain about that this.

It stuck out like a sore thumb because conservative talk show hosts and Fox News has had it on their shows. I've seen it on the O'Reilly factor, Hannity and COlmns. I've also heard it on both of their radio shows. O'Reilly spend a full hour of his radio show talking about it.

Make a big deal out of it. That'll make it go away.

I am not going to let a perceived slight against America's integrity stop me from enjoying a perfectly good film.

Superman does not belong to America. He belongs to the ideals and principles for which America stands--truth, justice, freedom, etc. "America" is a transitory thing. One day it will fall. One day it will no longer be around. Truth, justice, freedom, and those other ideals are concepts that are as eternal as they are intangible. And they are flawless, unlike America, which is a flawed creation of human beings.

If Superman stood for just America, he would only be that and never anything more, never something greater. He would pass as America passes. He would be as flawed as America is flawed. But no, Superman stands for truth. He stands for justice. He stands for what is known as "the American way". Because nations come and go, but those concepts are a part of the human psyche, and they will be around for a long, long time.

And that's why Superman is great. He is the pure representation, the anthropomorphisation of an idea. He is beyond politics; he is beyond nationalism. He is the world's superhero, who just happens to be Made in America.

Around WWII Superman was changed to be more than an American hero. There's been a cool doc about it on A&E if you're interested. It goes from the conception of Superman to now.

I can honestly say I thought this movie was c***. Superman was the epitome of everything that is good and just. Now they've turned him into Mr. Today.

Come on. That isn't superman.

And I keep seeing and hearing people say that Superman is just an american hero, nothing more. It's like listening to 3 year olds scream "mine!" at a toy.

If you read the comics, He's not just an american hero. I have a collection of the original comics and I can tell you, he's more a world hero then an american hero.

If you want just an american hero, we have plenty of them. Captain America anyone? How about GI Joe?

Well, I do want to stress that that is my only complaint. I loved everything about the movie otherwise. It was excellent.
