Query: What good could possibly come from recognizing the largest nation on Earth, a nation with weapons of mass destruction(in huge quantities), and a pretty big army, as your enemy? Doesn't it sound pretty...stupid?

Maybe it is a big risk to do so, but it's not stupid because they are, in fact, our enemy. Personally I would like to see the US government finally aknowledge them not as a friend, but as a general political ally in a sense. We don't, I suppose, really need to, or should, aknowledge them as an enemy, but calling them our friends and allies goes too far. I think a more central/moderate term would be more appropriate.

There's a huge difference between neutrality and hostility.

Well, I would say they're hostile, but we could, to be less risky, declare them neutral partners as opposed to allies, because they are FAR from allies.

I wouldn't say that it was such a hostile statement, really. No, I confess, from a European point of view, it doesn't look like Russo-American relations even border on "allies". So I find myself coming to an agreement with Republican_Man, that neutral partners is something that would be more appropriate, when you look at what reality looks like.
