Er...Since when did anyone control the internet to that extent? Unless you're accessing the site from a government or school owned computer (firewalls and filters and such) then they do not have the power to block websites.

Unless of course the sites are participating is illegal opperations such as pedophilia or something equally outragous and inhumane.

Does anyone on the Hill understand what the internet is?

I must say that I kind-of agree with Trekkie on this one. I don't think regulating online gambling is something that the United States government has the authority, or should have the authority, to do.

Eh, I'm conflicted, I can see thier intents on this, Gambeling can cause lots of trouble, and some people, though shady operations, make a living on Gambeling. I do agree though, how are you going to "ban" it? You can't do it world wide, only in the US, and lets face it, the current state ran stuff would just transfer to an over seas server.

Its funny how the United States Government can agree on banning Internet Gambling Sites but can't agree on Protecting our borders.

Another point I just thought of: What about the lottery? Isn't that gambling? And it's supported and encouraged by the state governments...hm.

The lottery was originally created to support state education. I'm not sure how much of the profits still go towards that, but I'm sure there still must be some otherwise they'd already have been called out on it. At least in NY that's how the lottery began.

I know how the lottery began - it's a brilliant way to raise state funds. However, it's still government supported gambling, which somewhat clashes with this new ban.

I hightly doubt the President would sign this bill, I also highly doubt the senate will pass it.

How? It's an internet gambling ban. That's totally different. Besides, as the lottery is a government run operation, it would be the least likely to change. The government wouldn't bother trying to change regular gambling operations. If they decided to change the lottery, then what about casinos? The government receives a huge amount in tax from states with casinos in them, not to mention the increased tourism revenue. And then there's the whole Native American run casino issue. It would just be a mess.

They need to ban it or do something simply because these sites have very few if any age verification, and many kids are gambling online underaged. I say ban them all, because since many of the companies who own these sites are based over seas, our government is left with no other way to control and enforce the law.

It's called PARENTING.

How/where do underaged kids get credit cards to do this? How are they getting online unsupervised?

You don't ban the car because someone crashes it, you punish the driver. Don't ban internet gambling because people are irresponsible with their kids, punish the parent.

I suppose you will always keep your credit cards with you and never let them out of your sight, while at the same time, always being around when your kid is on the internet. Plus, gambling is already illegal in most places anyways.

^Keep your cards in your wallet or in a locked file cabinate. Don't put a computer with internet access in a kids room: keep in in a place that people walk past often. That and there are parental controls built into some web browsers (like Safari).

And the internet isn't a physical location where things can be banned by certain states/countries. It's a global thing. We simply don't have the authority to ban online gambling.

This is RIDICULOUS. The government doesn't have the authority to do things like this. What's next? Are they gonna tell me which video games that I can and can't play? Wait...they've already tried to do that. Are they gonna say that I'm not allowed to...I don't know what to compare this to, however, this is the stupidest thing that I've heard since Bush was re-elected.

Kids are not stupid. They will find a way if they want to sometimes, no matter how good the parents may be. Trust me. First, I know this happens, I know the kids, and the parents...who happen to be very compitent ones. Plus children do not simply get on the computer at their houses...but at their friends houses, where their parents will not be.

Plus, it doesn't really matter where it is. In most places in the US, gambling is illegal. Period. Fine we cannot ban web access to certain sites, but we can reinforce that gambling is illegal, and if you are gambling where it is against the law, you will suffer the consequences.

I do always keep my credit cards on, or in sight of me.

Plus, if I had a kid, I would make sure they know better than to steal a credit card. As a child, I never would've stolen my parents cards, I (like to think that I) was raised fairly well.

I never ever even considered thinking about taking my parents credit cards. Did you? Children respond exactly how their parents teach them to respond - intentionally or not. Fact is this is outside the control of the government on more than one level.

I have never wanted to take my parents credit card. However, parents can teach their kids, discuss what is right and wrong, and set a perfect example...this does not though equal an exact science of predicting the child's actions. I know this personally because I have chosen to do things that I know my parents would be ashamed of and taught me not to do, and the same goes for other children. This being said, no one, especially children, always choose to do the right thing. The wrong choices may vary, but I am sure, and as a matter of fact I know, that many kids do do this.

I dunno I would think an underage would be just as likely to sneak into a real casino gambling room. The casino here only checks for ID on people that look over 18.

I also think real casino gambling is just as relavent as online. Actually i'm all for dropping real gambling, just think how many megawatts of electricity a casino uses for just it's pokie machines.

I just don't think protecting children from online gambling as a important pressing issue. There is a lot worse things on the internet out there for kids, how to make weapons & bombs for example.
