Reports are saying at Materazzi called Zidane (a Muslim) a "dirty terrorist".
France deserved that game. They controlled most of the game and the shots were something like 9-3 for France. Domaniche shouldn't have taken off both Ribery and Henry. Should have taken off Malouda who can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Zidane almost won the game with a beautiful header but Buffon managed to get his fingertips on it.
Zidane is still my favourite player despite both the headbutt and the retirement. Zizou is the best!

On dutch websites they say he probablly calles Zidane's sister a "well someone who sells her body for payment".
At least that's what brazillian lipreaders think.
Well whatever he said... a professional shouldnt react to it like zidane did...
Still just cant believe how he got elected best player of the tournament.. unbelievable...

Actually, it's very believable. Just watch this video clip of France vs. Brazil in this tournament. He made Ronaldinho look like nothing.

Sorry for the long link and the poor quality of the video. But you can still see most of the moves and just how talented he is.
**EDIT**
Wikipedia information on what was said to Zidane
Quote: | Reportedly, the deaf forensic lip-reader Jessica Rees was employed to analyze the video sequences with the help of an Italian translator. According to these reports, Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a (N-word) like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist (W word for prostitute)." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just *beep* off." [8] [9] According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane's sister a prostitute. |
Another wikipedia article has the insult being "harki" which is a political insult to Zidane's father.

I never said he wasn't good... He has great skills. I agree totally on that. But someone who gives headbutts doesn't deserve that prize in my opinion.

Two wrongs make a right, sheesh. Where have you been?
But I agree, no matter what was said, I'm sure he could've responded without resorting to physical violence. It's really just immature all around.

Quiet, you!
*SMACK!*
They're running an investigation into what Materazzi said. And most of France, including their President have forgiven him already.
He was the best player of the past 25 years and that's how I'm going to remember him.

^What he says...
And indeed they are busy with an investigation now..
If it should prove that zidane shouldn't have given that headbutt (I can't imagine another way) then the prize of best player of the tournament will be revoked and probably Cannavaro will get it.

There's actually an article in the FIFA rules... If they prove that Materazzi said anything racist then Italy forfeit's their title. Although, Zidane announced today that the insults were about his mother and sister despite Materazzi saying he'd never insult a mother since he considers them sacred.
Zidane said he would rather have been punched in the jaw than had to have heard the insults and said that while he's sorry children had to see the headbutt he does no regret it. He said regretting it would mean that what Materazzi said was alright.
So Zidane could lose his award and Italy could lose their title. I don't think either will happen, though.

I'd rather a child saw a headbutt than heard the filthy language that allegedly came pouring out of the Italian.
