I thought I'd open a thread about the upcoming launch, which is looking less likely now.

Heard about this. I think what's happened is that the scientists - no matter how brilliant they are - firmly believe that the shuttle is done and I think that TPTB are wanting one last glory ride and it just isn't happening.
The thing needs to be retired. We have better technology, we need to use it.

Indeed, It will sadly cost lots of money. They had parts coming in for an OV106, or use them to upgrade a shuttle, but they cancelled it

Yep, heard about it on NPR when I came out of the grocery store. Now lets hope they don't find any serious problems with their cameras.

Heard about this and watched it on ABC yesterday; however, one of their many new cameras did detect something falling off the red engine (forget what its called) and the NASA officals are looking into it. Meanwhile, the shuttle passengers I believe looked it over and believe a bird may have just "left his/her mark," but they are going to wait for the officials to overlook all of the footage just to make sure.
Also, I think that it was so cool having the first ever space shuttle launch by NASA on the Fourth of July, America's day for Independance...what away to mark perhaps a new beginning of space adventure, after the shuttles are retired in 2010.

FYI: this is NOT the frist luanch of a space shuttle by nasa.... i mean sence the latest incident yes, but not frist ever.

I believe he/she meant that first launch of a space shuttle on that date (July 4th).

I'm glad the launch was successful and was unhappy that I missed it on TV but at least caught post-coverage the same day. I was excited to hear the news and am glad that it was on the 4th. Talk about a great day to launch it.
I was watching the Saturday coverage, though, and it stunk that I watched it so much and there was no launch. I hope the crewmen return safely. This is awesome.
