For a start, why the heck does Capt. Picard have to leave the Nexus just before Soran blew up Veridian- couldn't he go right back to Amargosa and kill/stun Soran there? Also, if as Guinan says, you leave an echo of yourself in the nexus, wouldn't Soran be there also? Why can't Soran recreate conditions on the Lakul? etc, etc, etc... All in all, ST:Gen was unsatisfactory- First Contact was way better- and lets hope ST 11 is better- but I don't like the prequel idea. We want Admirals Picard and janeway, Kira in Bajoran government, Dominion remnants, etc and maybe an appearance from Captain Braxton...

Er... probably because going back before the star was blown up ws the thing to do, doing it before would screw alot of things up.
It was said that Soran COULDN'T recreat those events.... and the echo was in there, it wouldn't have done Soran any good.

I do agree that it was SO stupid for them to go back like 5 seconds before he launched the missile. Why not go back to when he was onboard the ENT-D? I'd have Worf arrest him right then and there. Then again, you get into the Minority Report kind of thing with that. Does the Federation arrest people who are ABOUT to commit crimes in the future? *shrugs*
Kirk could not have been killed and gone back to his time, or better yet, stay in the 24th century.
As for the echo, Lord Borg is right, it is there, but the other Soran doesnt' care. He wants himself to be in there. Soran isn't the type of person to think "I guess I'll live my life in happiness because a part of me is happy somewhere else." He seemed really selfish. I mean for goodness sakes, he wanted to destroy a populated system so he could gain eternal bliss.

It was kinda stupid BUT as you mentioned, a minority report kind of thing, before hand, they had no "real" evidence that it was him. People would be like: "Er...? Do you have ecidence?"
Plus like Andy said, there would have been no return of Kirk! :O
Yeah...Guinan explained it pretty wel IMO. The Echo in a way, does not matteer, because in a sense it isn't actually the "person" that it supposedly is.
Though yeah, being Picard, I would have found a way to get a better advantage, like going down before Soran beamed down and had an ARMED away team?

ya, Guinan did explain it very well...and as it was said, she was just an echo. Not the real person. That's why Soran wanted back, because he, the real person, wasn't happy.
And going back to when he first got on the Enterprise would have seemed funny. If you get technical, it could violate the Temporal Prime Directive. Because he hadn't commited the crime yet, and there was no basis for his arrest. I think it worked out just fine, personally. Though I do have to agree that FC was way better...but that's about it...

Well I disgree that it worked out "fine". Kirk died and the ENT-D was destroyed. As for the temporal prime directive, I just thought of a way to get around the minority report paradox. Kirk and Picard can go back in time, discover the Klingon ship, capture it and force them to admit their alliance with Soran and his plans. Thus...the proof.
Quite frankly, this particular scene is plot hole ridden. Just an excuse to kill of Kirk. I can't believe none of the actors fought this.

True, they could have gone back to when they picked up Soran, and "devised" a faster way to get the Bird of Prey...that works. But then you wouldn't have the nice little action scene with to famous Captains...
And yeah, Kirk dies. But you have to admit, it was nice to have him in a movie again? I mean, I'm not a big fan of his personally, but still...and nonetheless, it was kind of a good send off. He died helping, yet another famous Captain of the Enterprise, and saved an entire system. Yes, I do admit the burial could have been better. A proper Starfleet burial, but I guess they wanted us to see it...
And so what the Ent-D got destroyed? You wouldn't have the cool Sovereign Ent-E...

Well I don't mind Kirk's death, it's just HOW he died, not THAT he died. The reason it was dumb was because it was so easily...preventable. I'm all for the ENT-D's destruction, Kirk's death, fight scenes, but this is such a glaring plot hole. They wanted Kirk to die and obviously no one could figure out a GOOD way for it to happen...

Haha...ya, that's true...they wanted all of that, and they couldn't find a good way to "kill-off" the famous Captain Kirk...LOL...so true...

I thought it was too bad the way that Kirk died too. And as for the Enterprise D getting destroyed, when are you not surprised when something always happens to all the different Enterprise ships? But First Contact was a lot better than Generations, but I still liked Generations since it was the first TNG movie.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie was in the beginning when they encountered the Nexus in the first scene, the ribbon looking thingy and Kirk kept standing up from his chair and Scotty all of sudden says, "Captain, is there something wrong with your chair?" It was just the funniest thing the way he said that. I also liked the part where Data did that little "I love looking for lifeforms" bit.
