Quote: |
In this semi-sequel to the first two "Superman" films, the classic hero returns to Earth after having been missing for six long years. What he finds astounds him - the world he knew has changed for the worse. In his absence, the forces of evil have regrouped like never before. Even Lex Luthor, once an outcast, has risen to the heights of power in Metropolis. And when an old enemy from Krypton reappears, Superman must fight his neverending battle like never before, amidst a world that has forgotten what it's like to have a hero.

I dont like the choice for lois lane and superman. I would have prefered Dean Cain to continue to play superman.

Yes, it would be pretty good if Dean Cain. But, anything other info?

The fact that they used Kevin Spacey for Lex Luthor is just terrible. I would have preferred Willem Dafoe or Alex Baldwin.
Brandon Routh as Superman
Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane
Not even close to being a lois lane.

Perhaps. I'm planning on seeing it, though I'm not much of a "fan" of Superman (not saying I don't like him; I'm just not a fan)

Kevin Spacey is always good at playing evil characters, I'm sure he'll be fine.

I'm not going to watch it. I read the book, and... sheesh. I hated it.
I'm a Superman fan, and this movie just totally will suck, IMO.

I saw it opening night, and I don't think words can be possibly used to describe just how spectacular the film was.
The opening of the film was touching and spectacular. And the moment we got into the opening credit sequence (which brought a huge smile to my face), I knew right away the film was going to be something special.
The acting was all top notch-- I believed every character in the film. Kevin Spacey was the man as Luthor! Finally, in a Superman film we actually have an evil Lex Luthor, and not merely something to be used as comic-relief (though, there was a healthy amount of that, but not in an over-the-top way).
The Superman action scenes were just spectacular; it's a very rare occasion when something I see in a film actually excites me, and every time I (and most of the audience) heard the classic theme begin to play during the film, anticipation forn what was to come went through the roof.
I understand what Bryan Singer meant when he called Superman Returns a "love story", as it was just that. The Lois/Superman romance was handled extremely well, in a believable, emotional, touching way.
I honestly have nothing bad to say about the film, I loved every minute of it. And even though I'm not that huge of a Superman fan, this is, in my opinion, the greatest comic-based film to ever be released. DC comics should be proud, as this film is a triumph even grander than Batman Begins-- which is saying alot.

I am so sick of all of these comic book movies. This and Spiderman are the ones I really can't stand.

We'll be seeing it soon, hopefully (I really want to see it), but I gotta say, the commercial for it with the newspaper guy saying "Does he still stand for truth, justice - all that stuff?" is a big turn-off for me. I don't get why it's so hard to say "the American Way" anymore. Anyways, I look forward to seeing it, most definitely. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I just saw it. I liked it. Toughi would have expected more from Lex Luthor. Kevin did a good job though.
Missed out on a lot of action. Even though there where things that can only happen in a Superman movie.

This is my opinion.
I wrote: | There is only one word that can describe Superman Returns: iconic.
That's what Superman is to people; an icon for all that is good. And I think that Superman Returns captures that in its purest form. I went into the movie expecting it to be great; not excellent, but okay. I came out from an awesome experience that left me nearly breathless. It was way better than I expected.
Spoilers are ahead.
The best parts of the movie were by far the parts that showed Superman's humanity. That was really the true conflict; summarized by Lois Lane's article "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman". But the world does need Superman, and as this film shows, Superman needs the world.
Both Viv and I expected Lois' fianc, Richard, to be a jerk. We expected him to be overbearing, arrogant, over-compensating in the face of Superman's return to Lois' life...and we could not have been more wrong. When I think back to everything that happens to Richard over the course of the film, he emerges as a mature character. He knows his wife still loves Superman (even if she doesn't at first), and I think he realizes the truth about her son's father. Yet he shows humanity's best side when he follows Lois back to the Krypton continent to rescue Superman. And it was quite big of him to let Lois go into the hospital to see Superman near the end of the film.
Lex Luthor? Boy that man has a complex. Throughout the movie he is obsessed with Superman--it's comic, in a way, and I think that this was a good choice because it helps contrast the ruthlessness that he displays at times. He can be a very cold character, for example when Kitty asks if billions of people will really die, or when he stabs Superman. So the comedic, almost Saturday-cartoon villain obsession he has with defeating his arch-foe helps lighten that.
Superman's "defeat" and return? Awesome. The movie would not have been the same if Superman just beat Lex Luthor easily, nor would it have been the same if Lex Luthor weakened Superman, left him for dead, and then Superman mysteriously returned. But the ending was a combination of those that had one important element: we humans. In the end, it isn't the world who needs Superman, it is Superman who needs the world. Lois saves him once, and then after he foils Luthor's plot nearly at the cost of his life, she saves him again, in a different way--you need to watch it to see it. I cried during those scenes with Superman and the hospital and...
It is definitely worth the money to go see it. Oh, and the music! The opening credits were a trip of a lifetime. Honestly, if someone had pulled me out of that theatre after just those credits, I would have been a happy man. To hear that theme pumped out through the movie theatre speakers, to feel that electric charge running through my body, that's why Superman Returns was so great. It captured lightning in a bottle. |
This is the only movie for which I have considered purchasing the soundtrack (not counting miniseries). HMV is sold out right now but gets more in next week...

I have no clue. I honestly am lost as to how they organise things. I just asked the guy if he had "the Superman soundtrack".

I just returned from the movie as well and I'm at a loss for words. All I can say is "Excellent" right now. It was really good.
My only complaint is when the Daily Planet Chief says (and it's in the commercials, so not a spoiler), "Truth, justice, all that stuff." I was disgusted by that and it stuck out like a sore thumb.
