I think that the Military should not be making decsions in areas that should be left to the health experts.

Yes, I think that's what the intention was. The purpose of this could very well be to rationalize their "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and that's why they're probably doing it.
I can't say that I disagree with the premise that it's a mental thing--I'm leaning towards believing that--but the US military going all out saying that it's a mental disorder? I'm not so sure about that.

I had a friend who was in the Marines. He became very unhappy with the service and wanted out. The Marine Corps declared him mentally ill.

I think that this is beyond stupid. Personally, I don't think homosexuality is a disorder at all and I find that line of though very infuriating.
However, for the military to think that it's a mental disorder on top of that? I don't think works can express how furious this makes me
