Quote: | Bush Makes Surprise Visit to Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq President Bush is meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki face to face on Tuesday after making a surprise visit to Iraq to bolster the newly-formed government and discuss the next steps in trying to shore up Iraqi security after three years of war.

I think this was a great thing for the president to do. Definitely the right thing, and the method in which he arrived shows that security has definitely improved.
I think it's a very good, productive move made by the presidetn. It's also kind-of funny that he left many of his cabinet members, expecting to spend time with him today, behind.

It wasn't really a "suprise", since the Iraqis mobilized thousands of security personnel in Bagdad in preperation.

How do you know that that didn't happen just beforehand, if it did at all?

Um, yeah. I'm the President, and I'm going to drop in to Bagdad. Best not tell the Iraqis.
Get real.

Well, the word still is that he didn't let the Iraqis know, and I happen to think that logical, until the facts say otherwise.
Naive? Maybe, but he didn't even let half his cabinet know. What's to say that he wouldn't have notified the Iraqis when it would have been even more a security risk?

Maybe he had the courage and good sense to take that risk, out of respect for the new government, and to test the "security"?
To not let the Iraqi rulers know he was visiting would shown distrust.

Officals probably knew, but were asked not to reveal he was visiting.
