Mon May 29, 2006 5:31 pm Earthlings? |
|
Here is something im'bothered with:
Almost all the species of the galaxy are called by the name from the planet of which they originate: Vulcan are from Vulcan, Andorians are from Andor, Tellarites are from Tellar, Bajoran are from Bajor and i can give a lot more. But... We are called humans. Sure we call ourselves human, but why do other species call us humans as well and not Earthlings, we are from earth aren't we?
Any thoughts?

Is a good question, martians are from mars, Novans are from Terra Nova. Interesting indeed...

I asked myself that question a couple of times...
The same thing about Humanoid species etc.
Maybe it's just the universal translator...
I've seen it done stranger things

Well, Humanoid comes from the basic shape of an alien, we say Humanoid becuase of what we look like, two arms, legs a heard etc... but off topic.
I do wonder.... Perhaps we are called humans beause thats our species name, humans. Like Klingons and Qo'nos.

I know the part about what is an humanoid... Because of the fysical resemblance as you stated in your reply... But all other species call it that way to.
And you're right about the humans part... But we are also called earthlings. I think i've heard it in enterprise. Shran called us that way i think...

Yeah, thats true. But mostly its a name for a group that came to power or something like with the dominion.
Sometimes its also becasue we named the planet befre the species was found, like Talos IV.
But humans, So weird too call us that, they could very well be calling us Homo's too then.
But i guess its true a species can be called by a name used most regular.
I just thought thats weird because of the fact that Dracojastin pointed out, the word Humanoid.
Another interesting part about it is the Voth, they are Earthlings, yet call themselves Voth... So we call them voth, seems logical.

Me, being the Bajoran lover, can tell you that the Bajor prefer to call themselves the "Bajora".

Well, throughout the show humans have also been referred to as Terrans, since Earth's latin name is "Terra" (just as the Sun's Latin name is Sol). Furthermore, remember that when an alien speaks, they are usually speaking in their language, which gets translated to Federation standard. So the alien may say "Terran" whilst the translator interprets this as "human", since that is the egotistical name that humans give to themselves.

Thanks tach, I was thinking about that stuff .
So "we" may say its Earth, but being proper, one might call it Terra (One can specualte that it could be in the MU, even though they said earth in ENT, as the human race is called the Terrans) Under that kind of work...
Terra=Terrans
Vulcan=Vulcans
etc....

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure I remember several species with names that did not match their planet in anyway....

Like in Dragon's Teeth, with the Vaadwaur...granted, we never heard the planet name, but "Vaadwaur" as a name, or "Vaady...?" LOL...That would be a weird planetary name...
I would say that the species go by their planet name because it easily identifies from what planet they are from...Makes perfect sense...Earth - Terran (human); Mars - Martian; Vulcan - Vulans...etc. Why would you call a person from Vulcan something totally different like Bolian...(Just an example!)

Well, it has to do with a species name. Like we call our selves Human, yet our planet is called earth (Or Terra)
The Vulcans are a species that named thier planet similar to their speices name, with some it happens, with some it don't

Also a very interesting thing; Some languages are the same as the species name as well, like klingon. Seems also very strange they choose 1 language and call it the same as they call themselves.
I mean, earth hasm any different languages.

Interesting indeed, to continue on that subject we would need a new topic, but I will sway long enough to say that you are right..
BOT.
I think it's how it turns out or a translation, perhaps word just gets around to.
FYI, Shran called the Humans "Pinkskins"
[Edit]
Here's what we know thus far (Examples)
Planet = Species Name
Terra Nova = Novan
Mars = Martian
Earth(Terra) = Human (Terrans)*
*Terra is said to be the Latin name for Earth, Terrans come froms the Mirror Universe episodes, how ever, if Earth was called Terra, we could be 'Terrans' (Actually some non MU eps humans were called Terrans...)
Another interesting note, I think in an episode of TOS, Vulcans were refered to as "Vulcanian" or something like that.

^^^Probably because they weren't sure if they wanted the Vulcans to be called "Vulcans," just like the planet, or to be called something slightly different...like Houston - HoustonIAN. (that is was people from Houston are called in case ya'll didn't know.)
But Data even said "Terran" in Nemesis when he was presenting his "gift" to Deanna and Riker...I believe the direct quote is: "...Betazoid and Terran tradition..." I'm not sure if "tradition" is the next word...but he says Terran...

Well like it was said, everyone says "humans" and "Earth" but for Humans the proper term could be "Terran(s) [Or Homosapian(sp?)]" for Earth it's "Terra"

Well, in the whole scheme of things, we use the term Humans and the term Earth. Just because Earth means Terra in Latin or whatever, does not mean that our planet is called Terra. According to NASA, anyways.
Anyways...
As I said before. Some people like to call themselves what they prefer or know. The Bajorans call themselves the Bajora. The "Earthlings" call themselves Humans. Don't forget. Not all Humans are from Earth. There are many colonies.

Our planet is called earth in English, in Star Trek the Federation speaks English so it would be logical to keep calling earth by its englsih name, not Terra.
Terrans would be unlogical.
But calling us Humans is illogical too, since then we would be called by what all Humanoid species are identified as. It would sound like all Humanoid species are like us, like we where the first Humanoids.

Not all Humans are from Earth but from colonies, true! But at the same time their ancestors came from where? Earth...their native planet would then be earth, so their species would be, Human, Terran, or Earthling...whichever you prefer.

No, their native planet would not be earth if thats not where they were born. Like those born on Terra Nova, while Human, they would be "Novans" which is plural for "Novan"
