PostSat May 27, 2006 8:42 pm    Lethal Star Trek blade seized in knives amnesty

Quote:
This horrifying five-foot weapon has been recovered by police during a knife amnesty.

The three-handled sword with a blade at either end, designed to be swung like a paddle, shocked officers who took custody of it.

Photos: See more knives from the amnesty

They are using it to publicise a five-week amnesty during which they hope around 30,000 weapons will be handed in, mainly from youngsters.

A spokesman for police in Gloucester, where it was surrendered, said: "It is a particularly nasty weapon that can, literally, take someone's head off. We are very glad it is off the streets and we want more weapons handed in."

The blade is believed to be a stainless-steel copy of a Klingon weapon used in the science fiction series Star Trek. "It's an extremely dangerous weapon," said a martial arts expert last night.

Other blades surrendered so far include lock-blade flick knives, exotic swords and a 'swordfish jaw' weapon with razor-sharp teeth.

The Home Office amnesty is in response to a series of attacks in recent weeks which have claimed the lives of volunteer policewoman Nisha Patel-Nasri and 15-year-old schoolboy Kiyan Prince. Safety campaigners and police say it does not go far enough. They are demanding far tougher sentences than the current maximum of two years for carrying a knife.

Under pressure in the Commons yesterday, the Prime Minister said a minimum could be introduced because at present thugs can escape with only a caution.

Mr Blair said: "We are giving urgent consideration not just to banning a whole series of knives but also making sure that there is some minimum sentence."

The widow of murdered headteacher Philip Lawrence said yesterday the amnesty on its own will not work.

Frances Lawrence, whose husband was killed at the gates of his school in north London in 1995, said three different ministers have been in charge of crime in the past three weeks and information from the Home Office is confusing.

Mrs Lawrence said: "There is an anomaly between the legislation for knife crime and gun crime, where gun crime carries much stiffer penalties.

"We all know a knife can kill just as easily as a gun so there is a great anomaly there. A knife amnesty on its own won't be a solution."

I have a 48 inch stainless steel bat'leth that looks similar to that one. It's a collectors item just like a martial arts sword is. Not a weapon.

If someone wanted to kill someone I doubt they would need to buy a weapon like this to do the job. You can kill someone with a phillips head screwdriver if you really wanted to.

Why, exactly, are people turning in their knives?
...
Two year sentence for carrying a knife?! That's appauling. I carry a switchblade everywhere I go. It serves many purposes, everything from opening tricky packaging (what I usually use it for) to self defense (what I hope I never have to use it for)...

I won't be going to London any time soon.

The UK is has very harsh rules on all weapons.

Its even illegal to have pepper spray. I think its crazy to be honest. British people have no way to defend themselves legally.

Probably a concealed weapons charge. There has been an increase in violence, there are similar laws in this area.

There's been a large amount of fatal stabbings recently. You're allowed to carry a pen/flick knife with up to a 3 inch blade if I remember correctly, but that's it.

You also have to have a very good reason for carrying a knife.

Banning things in this coutnry seems to make it worse, Since handguns were banned in 1997 gun crimes rose, when before they were decreasing.

This is about Knifes in the UK from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Knife possession is only legislated in public places. In private almost any kind of knife may be owned (with the exception of automatic knives: flick knives, butterfly knives, and switchblades, which are illegal under many circumstances). In general, knives carried in public places are legally considered to be offensive weapons and the carrier can be charged with "possession of an offensive weapon". It is however legal to carry a knife if there is a bona fide reason to do so for example, if it is a tool required for ones trade (e.g. chefs) or if it is part of a national costume (e.g. sgian dubh), or if it is carried for religious reasons (e.g. Sikh Kirpan). A special exception exists for penknives (pocket knives) which are legal without reason for possession, but they must be non-locking and sub 3". A common misconception of UK law is that any knife with a locking blade is illegal to carry, this comes from prohibition of 'flick knives', which also requires the knife to have "a blade which is released from the handle by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force

Yeah... CJ? Pepper Spray can cause perminment damage, which is prolly why it was banned, but I see what your saying.

I can see a reason for the knifes to, again, you need to defend your selves, I know, but this is an attempt to make it so you dnt have to.

Sad that a ban caused crimes to go up when they started to go down.

If no one can carry weapons, then no one can attack others.

I do own several Klingon weapons. A Bat'leth, which, I surprisingly, I bought at a Boy Scout camp.

That's in a perfect world. People who want a gun can get a gun even if they are banned. So the ban just prevents law abiding citizens, which wouldn't use a gun normally anyway, from getting them.

Define weapon.

One might call a Bat'leth a weapon, i'd call it a collectable.
One might call a switchblade a weapon, i'd call it a tool.
Hey, i've got a garden machete that could easily kill a man in a blow, and then be tucked away secretly.

Wanna ban sharp garden tools? Let our world become overrun with grass, weeds, and brush? One can probably kill someone with half of the household items they have. "If no one can carry weapons, then no one can attack others." --- until they improvise and misuse a tool; which can be just as, if not more, lethal.

I totally support arming responsible trained citizens; cause then at least a mugger will have a shadow of doubt about mugging someone.

In the UK all "Offensive Weapons" are banned. You cannot carry them on the streets. That includes knifes, guns, pepper spray, tasers etc.

I agree, i would feel much safer as a result. Criminals will get a weapon no matter what. Its just the responsible people that are prevented

I also agree. I think that the governments who make these rules are ignorant to the fact that a ideal world will not be obtained by simply eliminating weapons. People sometimes need some self defence and the ability to use that if needed.

I could get any gun if I wanted to within a week or two if I really wanted to. Just because something is illegal doesn't make it unobtainable. Buying, selling & consuming drugs like pot is illegal here yet I could name half a dozen dealers within 1km of my house. Downloading, distributing & using pirated software is illegal but everyone does it.

I think the governments are blinded by their visions to make proper decisions.
