Our brain is kinda capable of much more indeed. However there is still a great difference between a CPU( computer) and a brain.. A Computer tends to do everything in a logical way. A brain doesn't... Simple example is math...
Computers can solve difficult math problems in miliseconds while a brain would need much more time....

So the difference here is the way both work... You could say a cpu is a part of the human brain. But not the entire brain.

If you would create an AI that would act like human brains you should write a program for it that interpret information in the same way humans do.
If you have that it should work exactly the same as our brain. You could then put it into androids or use it for artificial brains if your brain would be damaged.
My point is that artificial brains could work the same as humans do. It's just about the way you learn and what is "coded" in your genes.

Oh and both Data and the EMH went beyond their programming.

For the EMH i know that "Renaissance Man" is probably the best episode that shows it.
For Data i really can't figure out an episode. Last time i've seen TNG is to long a go

You also said a machine is a prisoner of its own programming and we aren't.

I see genes as biological programming, because it contains information about how we are going to be and it can carry sickness from parent to child.
If we could "reprogram" our genes we could get rid of those sickness.
But we can't so we will get sick. So in that way i think we are prisoners of our programming aswell...

:Like i said, our thouht are random. The fact a Computer can solve a math problem no mattr what the size in just under a second doesn't mean its faster or better in that way. Our brain can do the same thing, but our brain are too busy with other thing and not trained to do somethingl ike that, we need to learn it.

[b]yes, you can probably make a computer that si as fast and work as a human brain, but there is always on thing missing: Evolution. Our brains are capable of going beyond what they orginal intention was, and im'not talking about Learning, i'm talking about actual Growth of the mind (maybe human brain is capable of Telenkinesis or telepathy one day while a Computer brain wouldnt be able too go that far.)

Oh and both Data and the EMH went beyond their programming.

But only because Geordi la Forge and B'elanna torres allowed it and gave them the ability by adding Technology and software.

For the EMH i know that "Renaissance Man" is probably the best episode that shows it.

Sure, genes are a form of Programming, but can't you see that genes are so much mor then just bits and bytes? We evolve from those genes, but not just that, we also geneticaly manipulate them for our own benefit (as also is seen in Star Trek with Soongs Augments)

We arent able to do math equal like a computer... As we both agree.. they differ to much.
And what you said about evolution is right at well, but thats because our fysics is build to survive in different eviorments. And how we are doing now is really "bad" for evolution cause we tend to let medicine and stuff take over our natural defence system in our body... But the fact that we can addapt ourselves, evolve, is also "programmed" in our genes... about telekenesis and telepathy... i don't know how that works so i can't give awnser to that... If we are able to do that you are probably right. Just can't awnser it because i don't know how it works. But that's also a species binded ability i think. So that's also no reason to build on your awnser wether or not to give AI equal rights...

And i guess Geordi and B'elanna helped both AI's. But i mean say that you are a hologram.. You think and do what you do now... So you are exactly the same as your are now.. only you are Artificial... Shouldn't you deserve equal rights, wheter or not your created by humans or so?

Maybe if you put yourself in the position of the EMH or Data and try to think how you would feel in their situation... I know i wanted equal rights and not be treated like a peace of machine.

Actually, La Forge had NOTHING to do with Data wanting to evolve, his creator Soong did that.

As for the EMH, Ultimatly, it was Janeway.

Actually, it was the Doctor. The only thing Janeway did was authorize B'Elanna to give him access to his program to be able to turn himself on and off...So the Doctor himself aspired to be more, and did so. Granted, it WAS Janeway's authorization that allowed it, but it was still all the Doctor.

A robot doesn't have feelings. I haven't seen a robot in Fiction yet that showed true feelings.

Data comes close with his Emotion chip but still, he has no feelings.

With his emotion chip, Data DOES have feelings. It's a touchy subject. You couldn't do holograms as a whole, but perhaps the Voyagers EMH to start with. Yeah, he is a "Machine" but so is data, and he WAS given equal rights. (Damn starfleet, thinking that they 'own' him because they found him )

I think you have to divide this into 2 parts.

The first is holodeck characters and the second is hologram workers or individuals.

Now if you are talking holodeck characters I think that they are not eligible for equal rights because they are not permanent lifeforms who are sentient ( they are not capable of functioning outside the holodeck or the activity they were created for).

Now if you are talking about a hologram who can move around in different areas and locations (outside a holodeck), who can learn and adapt to different social and profesional situations and who is aware of themsleves and their surroundings then I think yes they do deserve equal rights.

This is avery tough question to answer bgut as Picard says in Measure Of A Man " we are exploring to seek out new civilisations and new life ".

Well there it sits.

I think that hollograms who truly gain a self and enviromental awarness and ability to expand should be granted all the rights should be given the same rights as any other being. Not all holograms meet these criteria, but those who do should be granted the coresponding treatment.

So: Take out the chip and what do you have? Wires and junk.

No soul no rights.
