The typical prom dress for men is a nice suit that is black and stylish not a tutu for balerina dancers. People need to get this in their heads especially this kid.

Why even have a topic about this? When it is completely pointless and have no say.

Its like because I wear S & M clothing all the time I have the right to dress in S & M clothing while working as a waiter at a fine dining restaurant.

I rest my case!

If his school is like every other one I have heard of, then he probably signed a student code of conduct or something agreeing to their rules...which I am sure include a dress code. I can't believe people are so freaking stupid. (And this guy, whoever he is, is definately one of those stupid people.)

Being discriminated against? The school no doubt has policies with regards to clothing. This is exactly what they should be doing--enforcing their rules.

I think this is discrimination. Women can wear pants - men can wear pants. Women can wear skirts/dresses - men apparently can not. Women were also not allowed to wear pants until somewhere between the 30s and the 40s.

As for prom, I have seen many a men wear dresses to prom, and everyone there found it quite amusing - and none of them were kicked out.

And the student code: the article didn't say anything about signing one. And if the student did, I have a feeling he would have read it through, especially considering his interest in bucking the norms.

I don't think it was discrimination. They clearly state that the boy had been wearing women's clothing all year, and there had been no repercussions. It was only when he directly violated school policy was any action taken.

This isn't discrimination; fact is there is a different reasonable standard of expectation for behavior of males vs. females; and he was totally out of line. This kid was simply whoring for attention, and he was successful there. I don't blame the school at all.

Yes he was being discriminated against,he was clearly showing his preference for womens clothing by wearing them all year!
Why didnt they just let him in and enjoy the prom as he wanted to be dressed. What was the big deal?
Rules? What rules? How pathetic and homophobic they must of all been!

The big deal is that this kid needs to learn that this kind of behavior is socially unacceptable, and shouldn't be tolerated.

If I went to a job interview in a dress, do you think i'd get the job? Obviously, I wouldn't. Why? Because a man in a dress is socially unacceptable. If an equally qualified woman then went to the same interview in a dress, she'd probably get the job. There is a difference in expectations between men and women, like it or not.

This is about reasonable social behavior patterns. He was clearly outside of them.

Some people can be too extreme in my opinion. Why doesn't he just wear a suit and stop making a huge "discrimination" thing out of it. the discrimination card is used too often now.

I don't think he was being descriminated againts, it's going a little to far to show up to the prom in a dress.

"Socially unacceptable and acceptable" are opinions. They vary from individual to individual.

While I don't think that it is right for this guy to have worn a dress to the prom, the fact that he wasn't allowed to...eh...If a woman can wear pants (openly) then a dude should be able to wear a dress (openly).

Its not discrimination, though. That's all a whole different subject, entirely.

But that's differnt, you don't see girls showing up to the prom in Tuxs.

Well, still, if they don't have the RIGHT to do so...well...its just stupid. If a girl wants to wear a tux, let her wear a tux. If a guy wants to wear a dress, let him wear a dress. Simple, eh? What's the harm, really?

^ Actually, one of the stories I read on this said that girls *do* go to proms at the same school in tuxes.

Yeah. That's why I feel like it's descrimination. Why is it wrong for men to wear skirts/dresses? It was just as 'wrong' for women to wear pants on a regular basis before about WWII.

Also: social attitudes change, and when it's dress standards changing, usually there's a lot of complaints from the opposing side. Historically the opposing side has lost. Women can wear pants. Adults can wear shorts. Men don't have to wear suits. Women can wear bikini's and one piece swim suits. Women can wear buisness suits. Women can cut their hair short. Women don't have to wear hats or gloves. Showing your ankle is no longer scandelous. And a guy can't wear a dress.

I think this is stupid. The kid wore womens clothes to school ALL YEAR, and they chose to enforce the dress code at this kids prom. The don't even ENFORCE the dress code half the time. And as for when you sign the student code of conduct, half the time you don't even get to read it. At my high school, you sign the form first and THEN they give you the handbook.

I wouldn't do that . Someone tried to get me to do that once, I told them they were nuts if they thought i was going to sign something I havent read yet.

BOT

I still think it's pretty odd though, really I guess if it wasn't enforced but in all honesty, this sounds like a cry for attention from the kid

The kid was homosexual. He was displaying what he believed in. I don't find that odd. I don't care what anyone wears, actually. Wear what you want. No harm done, eh? Its not like wearing a dress will kill someone. Loosen up.

That's right. He wore "women's clothes". Not dresses. Not until that day.

Women's clothes is a general term. He may have worn dresses in school, he may not have. Women's clothes INCLUDES dresses. What does it matter? Once, again...Where is the harm?

this situation is difficult to really say whether it was right of the school or not HOWEVER the guy was wearing womens clothing for the school year so there should be no reason why he shouldnt be allowed to wear womens clothes to a prom.

On the other side of the fence though, because a prom is essentially a formal event which means black tie for the guys and dresses and the like for the women so in that respect i can understand why the school would want to enforce it.

Heck its only one night he coulda worn a suit it wouldnt have harmed him

Not always. I know women who've never worn a dress. And the harm comes in breaking policy. Not with the dress. It doesn't matter if you agree with him or not, the policy is there for a reason. Most likely to stop guys from doing it as a prank. The school obviously never intended any discrimination or they would have balked at the beginning of the year.

The fact is, he violated the school's rules. So he should have been in trouble.
