Heard about this this morning. Their given free prayer rugs; 3 meals a day, following nutritional guidelines, religiously and otherwise; a great number of things to quell the idea that Gitmo is a bad place; and much more, and this is how the guards are treated? Yeah. Right. Makes sense to me

Well, not defending them, but even the most comfortible prison, is still a prison. If I were a prisoner, and was treated like royalty, I'd still treat the guards like crap, because no matter what treatment you get, it's still a prison. With that said, thier crimes? thier lucky they arent force fed with a needel once a day and it called good.

"Their crimes?" Most of them haven't even been tried.

Perhaps you've forgotten. These are not US citizens. These people were not simply rounded up while sitting in tea shops and minding thier own business. They were captured while taking part in an armed conflict with US forces acting according to UN wishes, after being given several chances to surrender. Firing on US forces is a crime in the eyes of the US military.

I always figured "innocent until proven guilty." Guess I'm just some kind of wacked out liberal idealist.

No, perhaps you just don't understand that these weren't just hicks picked up on the street. Perhaps you just don't know that they were found on the battlefield, as terrorists, not as uniformed soldiers. The Geneva Convention doesn't apply to them, nor does our Constitution.

And you know this because the military and government tells you so? Perhaps you just don't know that people aren't automatically guilty, even if they're caught in the battle field and are held at Gitmo. They've even released people, so obviously they aren't all guilty.

Well, of course not. Do you expect all of them to be guilty? No, obviously you don't, and nor do I. Mistakes will be made, and they are remedied with them being sent back to their respective countries once they are cleared. Entirely understandable.

So, you're saying that since some of them ("some" since I don't have any idea who is and who isn't, and apparently neither does the US government) are guilty and aren't US citizens, the whole lot should be held indefinitely? That's the vibe I'm picking up.

Until they are shown to not be who we think they are, yes. Better to risk being wrong about them being terrorists than being wrong about them not being terrorists, no?

Of course, that's why people can be held in the first place. But the issue is that people are being detained without trial for years. Why not speed up the process so it's months? You can't compensate someone for taking away years of their life.

We are. We're not torturing them, are we? We're not cutting off heads, are we? We're not crashing planes into buildings housing innocent civilians, are we?
No, we're not. Just because we have Gitmo doesn't mean that we're any where near the level of the terrorists, because we're not.
