BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Democratic Party leaders are wondering what to do about a candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred and wants to "reawaken white racial awareness."
Larry Darby, the founder of the Atheist Law Center, made an abortive bid for the AG job as a Libertarian in 2002, but only recently have his views on race and the Holocaust come to light.
He has no money for campaign advertising and has made only a few campaign speeches, but garnered 12 percent support in the June 6 primary in a poll of 400 registered voters last month.
The poll, which was conducted by a university professor for Alabama media outlets and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, shows Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson ahead with 21 percent of the vote but about two-thirds of respondents undecided.
The state Democratic chairman, Joe Turnham, said the party began an investigation last week after hearing about some of Darby's comments in a television interview.
While the party supports the free-speech rights of any candidate, Turnham said some of Darby's views appear to be in "a realm of thought that is unacceptable."
"Any type of hatred toward groups of people, especially for political gain, is completely unacceptable in the Alabama Democratic Party," said Turnham.
It is unclear whether the party could do anything at this point, although the party could decline to certify the results should he win.
In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Darby said he believes no more than 140,000 Jewish people died in Europe during World War II, and most of them succumbed to typhus.
Historians say about 6 million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis, but Darby said the figure is a false claim of the "Holocaust industry."
Darby said he will speak Saturday near Newark, N.J., at a meeting of National Vanguard, which bills itself as an advocate for the white race. Some of his campaign materials are posted on the group's Internet site.
"It's time to stop pushing down the white man. We've been discriminated against too long," Darby said in the interview.
Tyson said he does not consider Darby to be a serious candidate.
"I am astonished as anyone has ever been that anyone is running for public office in Alabama on that platform," he said.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face either Attorney General Troy King or Mark Montiel, his opponent in the Republican primary. |

I can't blame them. I would be entirely aprehensive as well.
But look which party's got the openly racist man running? Not saying that the Dems are racist or anything, but rather that they shouldn't be saying the Republicans are racist and whatnot, as some left-wingers are.

There was one guy who ran for the Dem primary for Gov. in Ohio who wanted to make homosexuality a crime punishable with the death penalty.
I dont know why they join the democrats.

Because they don't belong in the Republicans, perhaps?
Or perhaps the Democrats are more accepting. :p
It doesn't matter what party they're in, though. All it does is argue against the Democrats who attack Republicans for such things, when they, in fact, have people in their own party who say things that truly are extreme and such, whereas the Republicans don't actually say things, for the most part, but there's the accusations that come up that pin it down on them.
Perhaps the majority of their views are liberal, just they're racist or homophobic. Just because most of the Democrats are supportive of homosexuality doesn't make it amazing for one of them to say something like that.
All that does is give the Republicans a counter-argument, as does this case. I always bring up Robert Bird, former KKK member and Democratic Senator, as well as former Senate Majority Leader, as an argument. Well, now you have a candidate who's openly racist whom, even if he loses or whatever, can add a counter-argument.
That's all it does. It doesn't say that the Democrats are racist; it just gives a counter-argument for the Republicans on race issues.

I hope I dont have to remind you of Strom Thurman or Jack Thompson, RM.
Reading the article, it looks like his views on this came out only recently, as in last week. He hid his true agenda from people to get onto the primary ballot. Therefore it tears you logic of a "counter-argument" apart.

No, it doesn't tear it apart, even if he kept it concealed until then. It's something that can be used to argue against the wrongful accusations that Republicans are racist, Republicans aren't accepting of blacks, and all that crap. That's my point, and it's all logical.
Even if the Democrats didn't know about it until now, it shows that they can have racists within their ranks, which means it is entirely logical. Whether or not they knew it is irrelivant.
I'm only using it to show that no party can be declared "racist" or anti-black, though it just seems that you're trying to find faults there so that you can sit at your computer and accuse Republicans of being racist and whatnot, no?

o.O
Can't the Dems just say that he isn't following party guidelines or something and not support him? Not kick him out of the race, just that the Democratic party doesn't support his view (which they've said) and pull all backing that they were previously given. If they haven't done that already, I'll be shocked.
This man is absolutly nuts...

What exactly is that supposed to mean?
BTW? I hope you Democrats do understand that the beliefs on homosexuality are very mixed, as Howard Dean pointed out in another topic I made here. Not ALL Democrats are accepting of Gays, but they just dont want to ban them from marrying. There are Dem. who don't like that lifestyle. So kindly stop accusing Repub. of believing that, while you all don't.
BTW? That last paragraph is not aimed at anyone specific.

There's more than 2 political parties, when i said i don't know why they join the democrats. It doesn't mean i think they should be in the republican party.
