The only reason I like Chakotay or even tolarate him is because I'm in love with J/C and the stories that creates....I love Fanfic..hee hee..But Then my feelings for Chakotay change so often I can hardly keep up with myself it's just one of those things...... The only way I love Chakotay is with Kathryn Janeway apart from her he is nothing...I'm a hopeless J/Cer what can I say.... *I know I contradict myself and sometimes don't even make any sense....like I said it's one of those things....

Oh, Ditto. I'm sure he's a fine first officer...(well I'm not SURE, I mean, it's not like I Know him or anything....) well, only time I like him is with Janeway

Chakotay wasn't going to be a perfect 1st Officer, although, he was darn close, mainly because it was a crew that was slapped together or forced together. We should expect some spats and some rebellion once in a while. But, for the most part Chakotay was a loyal 1st Officer, who was for working together as one crew, and he had totally accepted Janeway as being the Captain.

I don't think his character was weakened during the course of the series.
I think, he's the 2nd best 1st Officer in the fleet, behind only Spock.

I agree on two counts: Chakotay was an excellent character to begin with, and the writers did pretty much kill him for no apparent reason... that ticks me off bigtime... he just became the character they used if they wanted someone to have a random romance with an alien or something...

Sadly that is so true...Unforgettable...Unforgiveable.

I think that he and Janeway complimented each other well as a command team. Aside for the fact the the Maquis would have rebelled had he not been in that position, I think that he was a better candidate than Tuvok.

- I completely agree, their opposites, both with strong ideals when together serve to strengthen each other. Also Chakotay's different perspectives would allow for different paths and options that perhaps Tuvok wouldn't have seen.

Chakotay appeals to Janeway's humanity, he helps her to remember that she is a person aswell as a Captain. Had Tuvok been in his position, Janeway would have lost it with regulations and whatnot altogether... Janeway allows herself to be Kathryn when she's with Chakotay and I don't think that even a character as strong of hers would have managed to live 7 years behind that Captain's mask without a break...

- As a friend yes, as a First Officer...I don't know.

You all make some interesting points and a very interesting question to ponder. But what I really wonder is - after seeing "The Caretaker" again very recently is why or how did Chakotay trust Janeway so easily? I mean I've found it a little werid that he'd trust her so very quickly as to sacrifice his own ship to save hers and also allowing Janeway to destroy the caretakers array. She was after all sent out to capture him and his crew. It just seems way to easy to me.

On a side note I think we all got ripped off when we saw Paris getting promoted and even Neelix & Kes asking to stay aboard the ship - instead of the affermation of an alliance between the two crews.
