I don't really know if this is the right place for this, but it was something that I had written a while ago:
I think that if you truly want to decide on which series is the best, then you really have to sit down and watch all of the shows all the way through, in order. Since I am really rather obsessed with Star Trek (shame on me), I have all but Enterprise on DVD, mostly cuz it hasn't come out. Over the last six months, I have rewatched all of the series, and I would like to share my findings. The first thing that I have to do is through out TOS. It was a show of a different feather, and it definitely was in a completely different ballpark then the rest, therefore I really can't compare it to the rest. (Apples to Apples) So after that... I have to come to the conclusion that I feel the best Star Trek series is Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Here are my reasons for it.
1. Major Character Development- It allowed the viewer see how each character grew, therefore attaching the viewer to the characters, and their dependents. In the other shows, I think that the character development was very limited to only a couple of characters, and often there was very little done with some characters that had great potential.
2. Well Written Storyline- The beauty of DS9 was its reality. The world that the writers created was not a happy go lucky type of story in which everything worked out fine. Often, shows would end, and I would be left with a touch of sadness because of the intensity and the impact of the true to reality of the show. Not to say that there wasn't happy endings, but life isn't always filled with the happy endings. I found that the rest of the shows often found some of the best stories in the darker and sadder stories, mostly originated from the example set by DS9. Also, the on going story line help develop the stories. While it did make it difficult if you missed an episode, the ability to tie on episode to another just deepened the attachment of the viewer to the show. Also, the storyline arched at the appropriate time, and did not wear it self out like others did.
3. Character Family and Friendship- One of the things that still surprises me about DS9 was the ability to create relationships and friendships. It really grew some true friendships, not based on need or mutual help, but solely cuz they liked each other. This of course was tried on Voyager, and while they did a good job, it truly was a copy of DS9.
4. Originality- I think that Deep Space Nine really was a new venture from the from what Star Trek was at the time. As I really love and appreciate the rest, they really had some flaws. TNG spent 3 or 4 seasons trying to step out of the TOS shadow, and not to copy what they did. Because of this they cumulative ability of the show was limited, and really, in my opinion, wasn't found until the movies. Voyagers issue was its spacial limits. They had to get Voyager home, but after about 5 seasons, they really had difficulty, I think, with creating new leads. There wasn't the Federation to fall back on, or the Romulans or the Klingons(etc). So I really think that they were having to come up with some really new stuff on the fly, some good and some bad. To me, DS9 kind of blazed a new trail. And with that originality, that great characters and character development, coupled with the good stories, good acting, and family atmosphere developed on the show, I really think that Star Trek Deep Space Nine dominates the Star Trek Series.

Yeah... I thought that the prophets that lived inside the wormhole was realistic.
And, how about the fact, that there are shapeshifters everywhere.
Nothing in the Star Trek episodes are realistic. That's why I like them.
I can't believe that this subject is still going on. I haven't been on this forum for about 2 years, and this thing is still being talked about.

Yep... just like a boring soap opera. True friendships? You mean like the love/hate relationship that Odo and Quark had? Or the one where the Doc couldn't get Dax, so he had his fantasies in the holodeck. Oh, wait! That's Laforge... he's the pervert in the holodeck. My typing just went from 40 wpm to 20 wpm, just because I'm getting bored thinking about it.
Well, like I said about 2 years ago... the most exciting part of DS9 was the last 6 episodes, excluding the last one where it became a soap opera again, when they all said their goodbyes and went their separate ways. So much for friendships.
Even through all the boringness, I still liked it, because it still had aliens and spaceships.

La Forge? Pervert in the Holodeck? I think you mean Barclay.
Anyhoo, DS9 is the best. DS9 had the best action scenes, best written stories, most developed characters (despite what Slash Gordon up there says. VOY had terrible characters) and was just great all around.
By realisitic, it means that the effects of things that happen in the episodes linger, unlike in VOY or TNG where they would just move on. DS9 had to stay on the station all the time and you would see the effects of the previous ep. and whatnot and anything that happened to the station would still be there in the next ep. unlike VOY (RESET BUTTON!)

Barclay's a pervert, too. In fact, a bigger one.
But, remember when Laforge collaborated with a female holodeck character, trying to figure a way around the asteroids? I believe, her name was Leah Brahm. He was actually getting all fresh with a holodeck character, and then in a later episode, Leah Brahm shows up for real, and ends up not being what LaForge was hoping for, because the real Brahm was married.
There was another episode, where LaForge was trying to get it on with a female crew member on the holodeck, and he struck out. At least, she was real. He then proceeded to get love advice from different people. He was such a loser when love making, that the computer generated Brahm was a way for him to practice or even succeed to get his cheap thrill. I mean, he was even going through Brahm's personal files.
I would hate to see how I would be like, if I owned a holodeck. It would have to be big enough for my wife not to find me.

Slash? Please don't call characters perverts. There are a lot better ways to criticize a character. Thanks.
I thought DS9 was really boring at first, too. But it was the relationships--the characters--that drew me in. Not so much the action or plot, but they were plusses.

Ok... I'll retract that statement, and instead say, that he misused the holodeck for own jolly purposes.

I have to say that back when I watched Voyager I didn't care for DS9. And I did what I always do...didn't even give it a chance and truefully didn't have much interest in it. Until very recently that is. I'd say two weeks ago, I became more interested in it, and hey...it turns out. It's not as bad of a show as I thought. In fact I'm starting to get into it. I still don't think I've watch enough of it to give an acurate assesment...but. I'm giving it a chance. Right now I'm kind of fascinated with Odo. And interested to find out how and why Worf comes to DS9.

DS9- not the best series- yes. Boring- no. Its downfall was it was TOO exciting, with the constant continuations in 30-part story arcs. And they overdid the eclecticness of the team a bit, making quite a non-cohesive character set. Still, it was worth it all for Odo, Quark, Kira, Garak and Weyoun

That was the whole point of the show though. All the other series, in particular Voyager *Ducks* focuses to much on one episode storys, no real arcs, many two parters were barely that. It was a brave thing to do, making 6 episode story arcs of one thing, they did it quiet well. As for excitement, again, many other shows avoided that, the downfall of TNG would be, a Powerful Galaxy class ship based series, and 90% or more battles were either A) refered to, or B) you only saw it on the bridge of the ship, rarely was there a shot of the battle in space, and even then many times it was a shot on the viewscreen. DS9 did this differently, they were able to not only have massave space battles, but show them in such a way that some movie productions were outclassed. For a show, that's impressive.

-You won't be getting any stones from me. As a Voyager fan I agree with your assesment. I quite honestly love story arcs and when I saw one from the first or second season on DS9 very recently (the one where Kira is recalled and they have to fight for the station) Very good arc considering how early the show was. Hell I saw the first two parts and couldn't wait for the third!

- I quite agree...years ago I wouldn't have thought much about it. But now having see more of it and becoming much more interested in it. I would have to say if there's one word to call DS9, it's definetly not boring.

I just got done watching the 5th season on DVD, or rather did earlier this week. DS9 had it. While darker then what the great bird intended, the writers knew what they were doing, they took what they learned from TNG (Which ever ones that migrated over), made some good storylines, good actors etc... IT was a unique premise, setting it on a space station (Abiet risky dispite TNG having continue for two more years). IN short not much wrong was really done with this show ultimately. Bring some of the witters back (Sadly, Mr. Pillar passed away ) to work on a movie or a series, Trek would be fixed.

DS9 is great, if you ask me... but I haven't see a lot of original episodes of Star trek, I am just too young...
I know that I am watching DS9 and I like it, I like the characters and everything... just one thing... it is a bit boring because of that neverending war...
