PostSun May 07, 2006 8:21 am    Dreams:What are they?

What are dreams? Are they something for us to see the future when were not in the living world? Or are they showing what could have happened or our deepest nightmares of our thoughts? Or Showing our Past? Or Nonsense? Or Now and Today's events?

Future events:Showing us what could happen with us and our love ones around us.

What could have happped:Showing us what could have happened if we did something in our past and showing us what could have happened.

Nightmares:The deep and evil parts of our brains that showing stuff to give us these things and things to make us scared?

Past:Showing our past in ways that we should forget and thought we have burried them farthest deeps our our brain.

Nonsense:Just random visuals, stuff that doesn't make sense and just mumble jumble.

Now and today's events:Things are happening today and what could happen in days, months, years and so forth.

My question to you is what are dreams to you?

Dreams to me are different and very random on various subjects on what think before I go to bed or whatever comes to mind.

Thank you for reading this I hope this is clear for you as it was for me.

I dream over the Future. Not the Future when i am dead, but like well.. what is going to happen tomorrow. But, they aren't dreams.. it is more a look into the other day, i always seem to know what is going to happen.. This is a bit annoying, but.. well it's usefull too. A doctor once told me he believes i have Telepathic abilities.. Paranormal powers, but i think it's just luck...

Sometimes I have premonitions, but those always feel different to my regular dreams.
To me, dreams are your brain telling you how to make your life better, what you want and what you are afraid of. THey are your brain forcing you to accept things

I usually have nightmares about horrible things happening to me or those I love. Sometimes i even have premonitions . I was always told that dreams are your sub conscience mind thinking about stuff that bothers you or things you like.

Interesting. Abraham Lincoln is said to have forseen his own assassination in his dreams the night before.

I dream of the future. Not the Star Trek future, but the future of tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. Almost all of my dreams come true. They're like my little heads up. If I really need to see how something is going to go, I try my hardest to dream about it. My dreams never steer me wrong.

I dream about really weird things. I dreamed about Jesus( the LORD not a swear word), Sometimes, i dream about me talking on MSN. I also dream about bad things happening to the ones i love and sometimes i dream about the love of my life leaving me. (I HATE those dreams.)

I once dreamed about a walking shopping cart with a birds beak.

I dreamt about stopping a shoplifter at work so that pretty much sums up what I think about. I will one day stand up and take out a shoplifter.

What i believe:

1. Dreams are Hallucinations that are caused by Chemical reactions in your brain that are caused while you sleep becasue the brain changes its status and perhaps rests or reorientates.

the Hallucinations consist of Recent events, fears, memories, fantasies, plans.

They are random, sometimes the hallucinational images are remembered by the brain and when conscious they differ in Realism and length.

Depends on how the brain reacts too these images when sleeping on how realistic they become(sometimes called visions when a dream seemed totally realistic like real life and very logical in happenings), or frightining(a nightmare)

This first one might explain why people who don't sleep enough get nightmares and react heavily whil asleep too sounds and vibrations since the chemical reactions in the brain are more intens since the brain hasm ore of it stored and releases as much of it as it can during the short or few times of actual sleep. It also might explain the reactions of the eyes while in REM sleep, a reaction too the Chemical imbalance in the brain (maybe even sleep walking and snoring)

2. They might also be the result of your brain sorting itself out while the consciousness is asleep.

This second one might explain why some people might dream the same thing over and over again since that dream made such an impression that the brain needs to sort it out all over again the next night.

How ironic, but I am nearly the same way. Nightmares of bad things happening to me or the ones I love, and call me crazy...but sometimes I have a dream say about my mum yelling at me for doing something wrong, then later on (months, even years later) it happens. As far as what dreams are to me...I would say that, to me, dreams are a sort of gateway that your mind uses to communicate certain things to you, much like Brightstar82 suggests, reminding you of fears / happiness / etc.

Dreams feed on desires in ways that are too hard to understand.

As humans we have desires, both perfect and imperfect; and when you eliminate the logic of reality, you have dreams. Sometimes we need to be freightened, and we have nightmares. Sometimes we need to have happiness and we have euphoric dreams.

I love dreams, and I love to analyze them. Every detail means something.

Ever so often I will have special dreams, dreams so intense, that I feel they are a part of my life. These are the dreams I tend to dwell on, and analyze most.

If I could dream every night I would be very happy.

Not always the case. When i'm depressed; I generally have very pleasant dreams.

I simply speak from my own experience. Take it as that, nothing more.

I have a lot of nightmares- surely I don't need to be frightened? Life is frightening enough (and when I'm more depressed, I have more nightmares).

indeed. when a person is depressed the Brain is possibly either in a state which cause the chamecial compound too make dream more vivid(what nightmares usually are) and frightning. Or as a result of the dression your subconscience is obsessed with doomsday scenario's and such and the brain needs too sort that out while asleep.

I have an example(not about the depressed though, but give your opinion):

My dad had an operation in his nose once because it all got infected and all. Now, for a while though my dad had to walk around with a terrible pain in his face, because it was all infected. So he went to the pharmacist who immediately gave him Opium as a pain releaver(which they don't do for nothing). 2 drops of opium on your bread just before you went to bed and the pain should go away. It worked, as soon a my dad had eaten the opium the pain was gone and he went to bed. But as soon as he closed his eyes he dreamed that that he was racing through a river at top speed on a small boat, he woke up 10 seconds later sweating and out of breath, when he closed his eyes a second time he was immediately in that boat again racing with an enormous fast speed, he discribed the dream(or perhaps hallucination) as very strong and real, he was terrified. The next day he took back the rest of the opium and never used it again.

So you see, this for me proofs my theory, through a differ in the chemical balance in the brain the brain starts showing these images, although my dad wasn't fully asleep i would guess that if he went totally asleep(REM) the dream would have gotten far worse and he would probably have fallen out of bed or worse.

This woman who was pregnant had a dream that her belly was frozen and the next day she was told it would be stillborn. We watched it on video in psycology class.

I only seem to have nightmares when I experience sleep paralysis. People used to say an incubus had got them when this happened, but when i get sleep paralysis, I dream about being trapped, constricted or smothered.
Nightmares are a rare thing for me, even though I get depressed a lot.
Mainly, i would say my dreams were controlled by stimulation of my imagination and hormones.
