I agree, though I much prefer, like Founder, the Special Edition to the Original Trilogy. But I don't want them to go through it and add more things again. I'm already mad enough about the Anakin change in the end of Episode VI on the DVD.

I'm undecided about that. On the one hand, it seemed unnecessary but on the other hand, it was a nice touch to have after watching Episode III.

I have to say that I like the Special Edition just because they got rid of so many errors from the Original... I can watch it without seeing blue screens and stuff.

Well, that'll be fixed. It's going to be digitally remastered and all that stuff.

I don't mind it. It makes sense in the grand scheme of things.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but what exact Anakin change are we talking about? Knowing me, I so probably missed it.

The very end of the movie, when you see his spirit. It's Hayden Christiansen, not that other guy.

Oh! Now see, I wouldn't actually know that because I have a new set of Star Wars movies on DVD. The cases match the ones for the first three though, so I'm sure if I were to get bored and watch Episode VI (not that i only watch when bored), then I would probably notice it

Trust me, it isn't as bad as many of the fans says it. I used to hate it until I understood why Lucas did it.

Oh, I understand the reasons for it. I just disagree with it. Entirely.

OMG!!! I didn't know they did that to the movies!
I liked the other guy, cos it showed what vader would have looked like if he had stayed on the straight and narrow and grown up proper. You can't add a whippersnapper like Hayden in there! And vader held on to some of the good in him, so he should look like older anakin!!
I'm all choked up with rage, I'm starting to sound like shatner!

I think it makes more sence if it was the older anakin skywalker, Luke has saved him. Vader turned against the dark side in the end.
If anakin had "died" Vader would have never turned against the dark side

No he shouldn't. That "older" Anakin only looked like that because of the affects of the suit and burning. He may have looked more cleaned up, but we can't possibly know what he would "truly" look like. Which is why they put the other Anakin, because that is the only real look they had, up until the end....

Vader never turned against the dark side, Anakin did. Darth Vader was simply another persona of Anakin. His darker side. Anakin did die against Obi-Wan, but not physically. Spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. All that was left was this shell. NOT Anakin, but Darth Vader.
He came back thanks to Luke. He had become so absorbed in the Dark Side and Luke pulled him out of it. How? Ressurection pretty much. Anakin was a Christ like figure. Born of a virgin birth. Part of a Prophecy to rid the universe of evi. Ressurection isn't too far fetched for him. Anakin was so powerful with the Force that he was able to do the Force ghost trick without learning it like Yoda and Obi did. So finally, when he had awoken and been brought back, he was his old self spiritually. Its almost as if that ugly old Anakin that is shown when the mask is taken off is the same Anakin from Episode III(the good one at least), but his soul does not look like the older self, but the younger. You're pretty much seeing the soul at the end.

Well, Founder, that's your take, and I happen to agree with much of it. Remember what Obi-Wan said? "You will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."
Anyways, the argument and reasoning is that Anakin returned to the light side, and so they wanted to go back, and should go back, to the younger Anakin, the Anakin before he turned to the Dark Side.
While I understand the reason, I simply don't like the idea of tampering with the movie like that. I mean, changing the entire character's look and all? Too much for my taste.
Now, if they changed Episode I's Yoda to the computer generated one (which I believe they've already done), I'd be fine with it. Why? Because it makes it fit more with the rest of the prequel trilogy, and isn't a classic or nearly as good as the OT.
But that's my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...
As I remember it, the ghost Anakin at the end of ROTJ didn't look like the deformed guy who was under the mask of vader. He just looked like a middle aged man. Hair and everything.
Am I remembering wrong?

Yes, you are. Well, kind-of. He wasn't bruised or anything, but that middle-aged man you saw was the very same guy who played Vader when Vader died and you saw underneath his mask. Otherwise it was, I believe, David Prowse.

Again, Anakin really only looked in that form due to his deformity. We can't truly know what he would look like. But yes, he had no scars or anything.
The way I see it is both ways make sense, but the younger Anakin one makes sense on metaphorical level and Lucas simply liked that more.

Exciting stuff, updates...
Quote: | First Look: Original Trilogy DVDs
May 16, 2006
The Star Wars trilogy comes out for a limited time as individual movie DVDs on September 12th -- complete with the unaltered original films as bonus material -- and will be available for pre-order starting this week. This is a chance for longtime fans to re-experience the movies as they originally played during their first theatrical releases, and an opportunity for new fans to see a bit of movie history.
Each movie comes as a two-disc set -- one disc is the 2004 remastered version of the film, while the second disc is a version that captures its original theatrical presentation. For more information about this release, see the original announcement story here. StarWarsShop.com will be making Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi available for pre-order on Friday, May 12.
Here's a look at the cover art for this release. Done in the photo-montage style of previous DVD release, each movie mimics a poster design from the original theatrical campaign. |
This is the source, and it contains the cover art for each of the three films.
I wish they were releasing the unaltered versions in a single box set, though, as was my expectation.

I spent most of my childhood watching the original trilogy (the Special Editions weren't released until I was 12), and honestly I'm perfectly satisfied with the 2004 DVD releases. The Special Edition cuts of the films, with even newer CGI and a few little add ons here and there really don't harm the films in my opinion-- and the fact that much of it helps to tighten the ties between the original trilogy and the newer trilogy is appealing to me.
