This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD
StarWars.com

Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. To see the trailer to the new game from LucasArts and TT Games, click here!

Well, I don't know about you, but this is exciting! I haven't seen the original version entirely as it was originally. Given I have the pre-Special Edition trilogy on VHS, but I don't want to watch that.
I'm definitely gonna get these, to complete my collection and view it as told originally.

I have seen Episode IV Unaltered. It is amazing that they could pull those special effects off in the '70s. It makes you wonder, eh? I'll probably buy 'em...eventually...

Okay, this might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between the theatrical versions and the ones released last year?

Yes, very much so. Those are of the Special Edition, and even have more differences than that.
There are several, to be sure. I saw the Special Edition in theatres, though, so that's my theatrical experience there.

I think the original versions should have been released on DVD back in 2004 when the SW boxset came out. I'll be buying it, and it'll be good to see younger fans having the opportunity to compare both versions of each movie.

I think younger viewers wouldn't want to see the older versions. They would probably say that everything looks stupid and lame. Although, if they do watch them, it would be good, so that they can understand what movies looked like in the '70s and whatnot...

Exactly. It'd be nice for them to make a comparison. And I'd hope that they'd realize that some of what the original versions achieved was quite revolutionary in the 70s.

Nonsense! I feel younger people today (me ) would be very interested in seeing these versions in their total unaltered ways as some of them may not have been around when they were originally in theaters (myself born in 1986 ) and I feel as if this could peak their interest and see things as they were back in history! I myself cannot wait for September to roll around so I can add these to my collections completing my Star Wars era (for now) and seeing the original movies as my parents, or family friends would have seen them back in the late 70's and early 80's !

Same here! I've seen the original, but not the way it was in theatres originally (as I have the original, non-SE Trilogy, on VHS), so this will be interesting.
I'm just mad that they never put Episode III out on VHS in the US

I grew up watching these on VHS. That's where they belong- on tape. Crummy, crummy tape.

DVD will make the MOVIE look crummy.

Well, this is even more original than the ones on VHS, madlinerd. For instance, it's not even going to have "Episode IV: A New Hope" for Episode IV. All it is is the digitized version of the one that originally played in theatres.

Garbage!? Garbage!? You're calling the original trilogy--unaltered--garbage!? I don't care what kind of version it is, but SW movies--garbage!?
Why, without this "garbage" you wouldn't have the special editions! To be honest, I'm...ashamed and disgusted at you! ()

I like the really old versions. People say that fan films are rubbish, but without the stupid special effects, it all looks true to the original.

Well i liked the older versions, untill episode 1 came out. I want Lucas to refilm Episodes IV, V and VI. Before he's gone. Use better Scripts, better special effects and better actors.

I for example: i don't like the whole look of the Empire Officers, they look "wrong Nazi". As does Vader, but that can't be changed unfortunately.

We've been over that already. My opinion: If they refilmed Episodes IV-VI, not only would I not see it, but I would disown SW to the best of my ability.

I agree. Doing so would be akin to repainting a masterpiece by one of the great artists. Doing so would set a precedent. We should be able to judge all works (comic books, movies, paintings, etc) by the standards of their respective eras.

Exactly. I mean, yes there are some loose ends and screw-ups, timeline-wise, but they shouldn't unilaterally go in and refilm it, especially considering the fact that Lucas will be the director, no doubt, and he's, honestly, not that good a director

He's a good ideas man, though.

I'm just not keen on this whole "refilming" thing. Not just with SW, but with anything. I mean, one of my favourite shows is the 1970s Incredible Hulk series. What if they went back and added CGI to that? What if they went back and refilmed 2001: A Space Odyssey?

I prefer to judge a film on it's own merits and by the standards of a particular era.
