Fri Apr 21, 2006 4:52 am J.J. Abrams Takes "Star Trek XI" Helm |
|
Daily Variety reports that Mission: Impossible 3 helmer J.J. Abrams will produce and direct the 11th Star Trek feature film, targeted for release sometime in 2008.
Abrams' executive-producer partners from TV series Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, have been named to co-produce the as-yet-untitled Trek flick. Burk also worked as a co-producer with Abrams on Alias.
M:I3 writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are aboard to pen the ST:XI script with Abrams, for a story that "will center on the early days of seminal Trek characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission."

Ugh...
I wonder why Rick Berman isn't involved...
*sigh*
Why are we moving back to Kirk and Spock? Even if it is the Academy years, we need to move on to making a DS9 movie. If anything actually NEEDS to be done, it is a DS9 movie. Plus, we won't be familiar with anything in the Academy movie. Most of us are familiar with the TNG/DS9/VOY era, now. Why are they doing this? Kirk and his pals had their hay-day. DS9 doesn't have a complete story line. It ended...abruptly, I s'pose. I would rather have a VOY movie over this one.
*sigh*

Thank god they got rid of Berman, He should have gone years ago.
I'm very happy with this announcement. J.J. Abrams is an excellent person for the job. Just look at Lost

He may be good and all, however...
If this is the plot? *sigh* Star Trek is moving backwards. I don't know why...why Paramount? Why?!?

At the risk of causing a stampede to buy champagne and party hats...
Note that the StarTrek.com report of the new J.J. Abrams movie refers to Rick Berman as a former Star Trek producer.
"The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project."
Former, as in prior; earlier; ancient; past. At long last?

Well, it seems to be true then!. My beef is it's a kirk and spock in the Academy, they seemed to have implied that Kirk and spock met when Kirk took over the enterprise from Pike. *shrugs*

You people should be happy, the Star Trek franchise is still breathing. And now we've got a good director, I look forward to hearing what the movie's about.

Star trek.com did mention the Kirk Spock thing, but it's still early enough for it to be post nemesis, the trek movies are usually never the orgional plan, hell TMP was orgionaly a series Pilot. (Well, meant to be)

Golly, I can't cite information to save my life!
But you're right about the story line thing, usually the first idea isn't the final one.

Please, please, please no more damn prequels. I want a show that is either during TNG/DS9/VOY or post those. No more going back. Great, now I bet they are going to rewrite the history of Kirk and Spock. Besides, a story about just those two? C'mon...

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree, I KNOW, I KNOW, books are not canon, I argue this EVERY TIME, but they all seemed to play on the implment that Kirk and Spock never know each other before Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise.

Quote: | The studio is hoping to release the "Star Trek" film in 2008.
No plot for the movie has been nailed down and no one has been cast for the film.
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy portrayed Kirk and Spock in the original "Star Trek" TV show in the 1960s and in numerous movies but "they have not yet been approached," Kirkpatrick said. |

I have already stated my objections to a Kirk 'n Pals Acadmey film. I'm crossing my fingers, right alongside Founder. We can't be moving backwards. An Academy film would probably rewrite ST history.
I want...we ALL should want a movie set in the TNG/DS9/VOY era. Even VOY fans should be supporting a DS9 movie. DS9 NEEDS a movie. VOY doesn't, though, I would still rather have a VOY movie over an Academy movie.

I agree with all three of you and cross my fingers, toes, hair, legs, arms, and brain cells. Star Trek is all about moving into unknown places, so the new movie should do the same, move into the FUTURE.

well, a Prequeal COULD work, if you do it right. The Idea behind Enterprise was sound, it was a way to show things that we have seen, or have been refered to in a new perspective. Moving into the future, what "new" is there really to explore? Not to say that I agree with the kirk/spock pitch, becuase I don't.

Well, if you don't want to go to the past, and if you don't want to do something during the established timeline, then you have to go to the future. And surely there's something that a movie could be based on in the future. But I do agree with you about a prequel if it is done right.

Ah, but, if they move into the past...they could screw everything up...this is a new guy. He wasn't involved in ST, and he might decide to change everything...or something.
Plus, I really don't think a prequel is necessary. As I said, we need to move INTO the future...a DS9 movie is actually needed. We need a CANON ending, to the DS9 saga...
