PostWed Apr 12, 2006 8:16 pm    Im having a problem at work and need people opinions

I work in a country pub/restaurant as a 'wash up'. I usually do at least two nights a week, one of them is wednesday night...

For the last two weeks now the other wash up i work with on wednesdays has been giving me hastle. Hes a chav too (i think only english people will know what i mean) So anyways we both have our areas to work on, he washes up the crocery and i wash up all of the pots and pans etc. At the end of the night its up to the two of use to clean the kitchen. There are lots of jobs to be done but there are 4 main jobs. Laundry, emptying the bins, sweeping up, mopping up. Now ever since i have been working with him i have always done the bins and swept up (occasionally laundry and he sometimes does the bins if they're too heavy for me lol) but i never mop up because he always does it first and says to me hell finish up and i can go home.

Last week was the busyest shift i have done this year and i didnt leave work last wednesday until 11:20PM As i was leaving nathan said to me "can you get the mop out" so i did, i filled it up for him and gave it to him. then he started saying how i never do it and its always him doing the work, i couldnt be bothered to argue so i left.

Then tonight it was actually a great night. But on wednesdays i come in do my work then go home. Nathan however comes in does a bit of work, flirts with the waitresses and listens to music, does a bit more work. Then he plays with his phone and does a bit more work then he flirts with the waitresses some more. And all the time theres me working away not talking to anyone making sure everything is done quickly ready to be used.

So it came to the end of the night and the kitchen was close and the two of use were clearing up. Nicki one of the chefs swept up so i didnt do that tonight. But i DID scrub all of the shelves and tables with the pots and pans on it, and cleaned the walls and pipes and metal plates on the walls. making the kitchen look cleaner than usual. Nathan had dont the laundry all night i didnt get a chance to. He took the bins out whilst i was down on my hands and knees scrubbing the pipes and he swept up even though nicki swept up earlier. Then nathan gets the mop out and says agrily to me "You're mopping the floor tonight" I replyed "no im not" then he said it again with more anger and swear words. Then i went down to the cellar because i left my chewing gum down there, then i walk back in the kitchen and hes badmouthing me to Helenn (one of the waitresses), so i walked in and said "Whats dont i do nathan!" then he walked up to me all up in my face his nose touching mine with his chest sticking out trying to act hard and he just started yelling and screaming at me saying i never do any work and its always him doing it and that im a slacker and refuse to mop up and of course every other word out of his mouth was a swear word "You f**king c*nt, sh*t bag, f**king nob, lazy peice of sh*t. That sort of thing" Then helenn told him to stop talking to me like that. Then i began to argue a little then though what would T'Pol so. So i calmed down and spoke in a calm voice and said "I will make a compromise" and he just swore some more at me. after constantly repeating myself for a few minutes he finall quietened down. i continued to say "I will make a compromise. I will mop the floor the next time we are working together as a show of good faith". He swore at me some more. Then helenn left and he started making low digs at me about me working etc etc. then i asked if he was working with me on monday (as he moped the floor) he just grunted at me. then i said ill mop the floor on monday. Then he turned around and said "You've got to admit, youre doing this because of me arent you", i said: "Yes, i am. If you ask me to do something then i will do it for you. If you order me to do something then i will not do it for you". Then he got angry again and swearing, saying i think im king of the world and im full of it and that im a slacker. Then he just said "You come to work to work not have fun, trying working next time" I said nothing and just walked out.

It came VERY close to a pysical fight in that kitchen. I try to think of myself as a pasefist but it was finding it hard to hold it in. I was shaking all the drive home, didnt even put my radio in. As soon as i got home i lit a candle and meditated trying to calm myself down.

What i need to know is. Should i go into work tomorrow morning (Nathan wont be there) and tell my boss about what happened? Or should i just leave it and carry on with the way things are?

Alright, I hope I get this in in time so that the mods don't delete it, because I would truly like to help.

I've been in this situation before, and I hated it.

I did the only thing I could.
Well...there were actually TWO different situations.
1) I was working at a car wash, and this guy was bieng an ass about everything I did wrong, and not doin his job.
I went to the manager, he told me he had too much senority over me, and I quit.
2) I was working at my current job, and I brought the matter to my manager's attention that one of my co-workers was not paying attention to thier job at all. My manager politely told me where to go, and how to get there. I then WENT ABOVE HIS HEAD, and complained about BOTH of them.

I don't know if either of these answers are right for you, but they did work for me.
One thing you have to remember though, is that everyone does things in thier own way.
It might not be the right way.
It might not be the wrong way.
It's probably not YOUR way,
BUT
It is the way FOR THEM.

Well, first off i have to say that i think you handled that perfectly.

Second, i definitly think you should go to work Monday and tell the manager about the little skirmisch, you even got an eye-witness to the whole thing.

If you really can't work with this indiviual then you should complain, either he goes or you go would be my decision.

I agree with lionhead. You definitely should go tell the manager. That kind of thing in the workplace is just not acceptable. The man needs to be reprimanded.

Logic will prevaile!

Thanks everyone for your input. I think i might go in today when the night shift starts. That way the Waitress is working and the chef is working that was on last night when it happened.

Also at this pub the Two chefs own the place. It just them two that are in charge of everything really and theres no one above them lol.

I definatly think i will go in to work and mention it now that you all agree i should. Its just a bit complicated when your dealing with chavs like him ya know, hard to deal with. I guess in Star Trek terms he is a Klingon and im a Vulcan. NOT a good mix lmao

^ lol ill take that into account

I went into work and spoke to one of my bosses. He said hes not having that in his kitchen and agrees that Nathan has an "attitude". He is giving him a verbal warning the next time hes in. Also on monday both of the bosses (the two chefs) are in and will keep an eye out and on wednesday dave the chef i spoke to tonight is going to be there and said he will not leave nathan and i in the same room together, he will stay in the kitchen durin the clean up.

Also he said he will look into changing my shift around so i dont work with him. He mentioned that he always works on his own accept for when hes working with me. That most likley explains some of his anger towards me.

I smile knowing that you have found an answer, but how much do you wanna make a bet on monday that dude is gonna go "Well... s/he does this, and s/he does that... why don't you warn her about THAT?"
...I'm not saying this too be mean, I'm just curious if that's the kind of person you are dealing with. If so, I hope they get fired.

Its true he will be like that. And to be honest. Im expecting him to be waiting for me in the car park when our shift finishes. thats the type of person he is and im going to have to deal with it. He he wants a fight then he can beat me up all he wants. This is just a body and it will heal. If he did beat me up then id show my bruises to the boss. He would be fired. In the end i would win

Your a pretty brave guy puttin up with the chav...my advice would probably get me an ear bashing so i'm not gonna post it

but as to my work problems my new boss is a stuck up, arrogant, self serving PRAT and he and I really do HATE Each other he finds ways to pick on me and no one else it really bugs me, hopefully by the end of it i'll have him wishing he hadnt picked on me

If it were my choice, he probably wouldn't wake up for a couple of years, lol.
People like that should learn to inspect themselves before attacking others, and work on thier strengths, rather than make themselves look better by showing other people's weaknesses as a cover up.

I'm sorry, but that bit cracked me up,

Anyway, yeah, like they said, tell your boss, because he's sure to.
