Sat Apr 01, 2006 8:04 pm U.S. Flag Banned Amid Racial Tensions |
|
Quote: | LONGMONT, Colo. (April 1) - Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag - as well as flags from other countries - amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.
Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.
"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."
Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.
Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.
"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."
Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."
On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.
"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."

Hm, misguided patriotism... Something tells me that Stumpf is somewhere on the left. Anyways I would be pissed if I wasn't allowed to wave my flag at school, even though I haven't really done it before.

I haven't done it before, but this would give me a good reason to start. This school district should be sued so badly.
I've often displayed symbols, worn clothing, ect... only because it was banned unjustly. They've only given students a good (darn good) reason to break the rules.

Mmm, makes me wonder if they took down all of the flags in the school. Which, last I heard, they were required to have.

You cannot ban the American flag in America....
Quote: | The laws relating to the flag of the United States of America are found in detail in the United States Code. Title 4, Chapter 1 pertains to the flag and seal, seat of Government and the States; Title 18, Chapter 33 pertains to crimes and criminal procedures; Title 36, Chapter 10 pertains to patriotic customs and observances. These laws were supplemented by Executive Orders and Presidential Proclamations.
...
174. Time and occasions for display
(a) It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
(b) The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
(c) The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.
(d) The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on New Year's Day, January 1; Inauguration Day, January 20; Lincoln's Birthday, February 12; Washington's Birthday, third Monday in February; Easter Sunday (variable), Mother's Day, second Sunday in May; Armed Forces Day, third Saturday in May: Memorial Day (half-staff until noon), the last Monday in May; Flag Day, June 14; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, first Monday in September; Constitution Day, September 17; Columbus Day, second Monday in October; Navy Day, October 27; Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November; Christmas Day, December 25; and such other days as may be proclaimed by the President of the United States; the birthdays of States (date of admission); and on State holidays.
(e) The flag should be displayed daily on or near the main administration building of every public institution.
(f) The flag should be displayed in or near every polling place on election days.
(g) The flag should be displayed during school days in or near every schoolhouse. |

I agree, to Hell with those people. We're going to fly our flag in our country becaue people fought and died to keep and preserve this country, and flying the flag shows honor to those fallen heroes. ARRGHH, those people can go screw themselves. And all the stupid illegal mexicans need to shut up! They have no right to be here (illigaly), and they steal our jobs and drive wages down. I have no problem if they get American citizenship and learn English. I'm sick of going to McDonalds and having to give my order in Spanish becuase Juanita, the friendly, unibrow drive-through lady, can't speak a lick of English! Okay, I blew off all my steam.

Ah, nothing like a little overreaction to get everyone riled up.
The "banning" of the flag was not banning the flag from appropriate display--as on the flagpole at a school. It was banning the flag from *inappropriate* display--as in waving a little flag in the face of another student to prove that you are more patriotic than that student. Please, if waving a flag is all you can do to prove your patriotism, then we've got a serious problem.
Far better it would be that these kids actually learn some civics.

Actually clothing depicting the American flag is technically against the rules. Read the above citation on flag protocol and please indicate where it says you're permitted to display the flag on your body.

^ That is not protected under the laws and protocols for the American flag.
Sorry, guys, the ability to wear specific items of clothing are not protected rights.

If foriengers don't like it, they know how to go back where they came from instead of living in the states. I am not racist or anything but if they don't like it oh well. I know I will also show my patriotism cause I am a American and proud of it.

I would have to agree. If you want to stay a Mexican, or Canadian, or what ever -ican and not an american? what ever, but don't you dare come here, get offended at our patriotism, and then show yours.

Agreed.
So I did. At a demonstration in Los Angeles. I carried the American flag that my SO was given when he was made a citizen of the US.
There were a lot of us in the crowd.
Yet, from the responses here, it seems I should "go back to where I came from." He can't, after all, because he's dead.
So, could you guys explain exactly what makes a US citizen? Apparently, naturalization doesn't count to you guys. And being born here doesn't count either.
So how can I become an American citizen?

We don't want you to go back, or your SO (I am not aware of that Term what does that mean?) If your born here, or Naturalized, your a Citiezen, its ok t also be proud of your backgrund/heritage. What is NOT ok, is for someone to come here, not want to be a citiezen, or in the case of this situation at school, american patriotic symbols are banned, because it could be a "distration" it is NOT a distraction to show patriotism towards the men and women that died so you can be free today

So all that hoo ha in the other thread about the demonstrations, that *every* demonstrator (since you were all so convinced we were all traitors) was... um... an *overreaction*? You all didn't really mean that anyone who was demonstrating should be forced out of the country?
Piece of advice--some of you need to tone down the sound bites and not look at things so black and white.
And it's nice to know that I can be proud of being an Indian. Just as my SO was very proud to be Irish.
So, you won't report me for hanging an Irish flag from my house on St. Patrick's Day?

This being an example of talking in soundbites.
The very first sentence of the article posted in the very first post of the thread indicates that *all* flags were banned. Not just the American flag.
And waving the flag in the face of an immigrant demonstrating against a xenophobic law that has absolutely no provisions for enforcement is *not* honoring those who fought for this country. It is using the flag to make a political statement that says: "I belong here, you don't."
My father was a Marine, and he would be appalled by people using the flag in this way.

heh.... no, I wouldnt report you. What I do care about is how, in this situation, we can't display signs of our patriosim or such. How would you feel if you were told "Oh yeah well you can't display it because its a distraction, for your safety, don't display it." (Oh and this would be in the native country that one would be saying that...) I see no reason why we should quiet down, I don't really see int "black and white" if it is, then it is, because frankly I am offended that the image of the flag is being banned, or that people are being suspended for wearing camoflaged clothes. Suspended! thats to far.
