PostMon Mar 27, 2006 9:19 pm    2006 Spacey Awards

That's right, the 2006 Spacey Awards are here! Vote for the best in science fiction and fantasy.

My picks:
  • Favourite Movie: Serenity
  • Favourite TV Show: Battlestar Galactica
  • Favourite TV Ensemble Cast: Stargate SG-1
  • Favourite New TV Character: Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell
  • Favourite FX: Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

(I didn't vote for either Favourite Video Game or Favourite Action Sequence because I saw none of the games/movies nominated.)

Choosing my favourite TV show, in particular, was tough, since Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, and Doctor Who were all nominated. Eventually I chose BSG, however, since although I find SG-1 enjoyable, BSG is just . . . awesome. I chose SG-1 for ensemble cast partly because I hadn't voted for them as best TV show, but also because I like SG-1's cast a lot.

It was either Mitchell or Vala for this one, since I don't watch Lost and Milton Fine (aka Brainiac) isn't, in my mind, my favourite new TV character. I chose Mitchell because he's a nice new thread that joins the rest of the SG-1 team together now that RDA has gone.

So . . . go vote. Go now.

Favorite Movie: Star Wars Episode III
Favourite TV Show: Battlestar Galactica
Favorite Action Sequence: Episode III Anakin/Kenobi Lightsaber Fight
Favourite FX: Star Wars Episode III (A little difficult between this and King Kong, but gotta go SW!)

I don't really know the rest of the awards, so yeah.

Would you cut it out? I love Star Wars and I love Episode III. How many times do I have to tell you? How many times do you have to say that to understand? It is either my favorite or second favorite movie, either before or after Return of the Jedi. It's an awesome move--a fantastic movie. It deserves all the Spacey awards it can get
(I do mean it, though. Please stop. I'm getting really tired of it.)

What's a Raz award? If it means that it's a horrible movie, those people don't know what they're talking about.
Star Wars Episode III = BEST MOVIE EVER!

It's like the opposite of the Oscars. Star Wars: Episode III won worst supporting actor (Hayden Christiensen).

RM...I can understand that you like Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was a great movie. You guys should stop picking on him for that (I don't remember who it was...heh...). HOWEVER...How on EARTH can you like one of the prequels over the originals? Are you out of your mind!?! The prequels are like the crap of the originals! They are still bloody awesome movies, but compare them to the originals...and...it is...no.

I'll post my votes in a bit.

Well, it's tied with VI. I and II are the worst.

More so II. I hate II. III is pretty darn good. My favorite would be V. The Hoth snow battle has stayed with me to this day...I love that scene!

RM, i'll stop. But I maintain that ALL THREE PREQUELS WERE AWFUL!!
Now I've gotten it out of my system.
One more thing. Why are you posting in a Star Trek forum?

(How did ROTS even get nominated?)

Like the Matrix sequals, no one actually says WHY the movies are bad. Thus, their validity on the matter doesn't hold much weight.

It also doesn't matter if Episode III won a billion Razzie awards. In this case, it was only nominated for one Razzie award and it was because people disliked Hayden. How about the other awards it was nominated for eh? Academy Awards, Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, Awards of the Japanese Academy, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Empire Awards, Grammy Awards, Mainichi Film Concours, Motion Picture Sound Editors, People's Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Visual Effects Society Awards. Not to mention, it was a box office hit.

Quote:
In its opening weekend, Revenge of the Sith earned a total, counting from Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22, USD $158,449,700 in the domestic United States box office, $145,500,000 internationally, for a total of $303,949,700 worldwide. With this opening, Star Wars Episode III broke four records including single day gross, opening day gross, three-day gross, and four-day gross.

People really need to get over it. The prequals were a success. People didn't like it because whiny fan boys didn't get the story they pictured since the end of ROTJ. As for the non fan boys, they simply didn't even understand it. Too political and forced people to think. Same thing happened with Matrix sequals. A lot of it was religious philosophy and forced people to think deeper, beyond the rabbit hole. Whiny fan boys of part I, usually Gothie people, didn't really like that. They didn't like how the movie became this explosive action movie, with religious undertones. Too bad.

I would vote but HH's site doesn't work on my computer currently.

People didn't understand Star Wars? It really isn't that deep. You have the bad guys and the good guys. There isn't much beyond that. I'm not sure about hating on Christensen, either. What would be the point of nominating people you don't like, afterall they only get recognition in the end. Halle Barry won one last year, and everybody thinks she's an amazing actress.

Anyway, I voted for:
Movie: Sin City (I didn't care for this moive, and was nearly my least favorite out of those nominated, but it was definitely the best film)
TV Show: BSG
Cast: SG-1
New Character: Vala
Video Game: (Didn't vote, since I don't do video games)
Action Sequence: Anakin (...) vs Obi Wan
FX: King Kong

There isn't a requirement for anybody to like Star Trek to even join the site, it doesn't matter.

Revenge of the Sith is a good sci-fi movie in some respects, so it deserves nominations.

I rest my case....

People do not understand the prequal trilogy. The movie is deep. It isn't about good guys vs. bad guys, at least, not JUST that. The politics of it goes WAY deeper. The theme of redemption. Who is friend and who is foe. It isn't just about a kid who turned evil, but the choices that he made in life that end up shaping the entire "galaxy". The PT was much more grey than the black and white of the OT.

As for the Hayden comment, he didn't win worst actor because people like him. Also, yes, he only did recieve recognition. I didn't say the SW haters were very smart.

Halle Berry, in MY opinion is good, but not "everybody" thinks she is an amazing actress.

Am not sure what you mean?

Don't understand it? Maybe you're just reading too much into it? I guess it's open to interpretation. But you have the Sith, you have the rebellion. You have Annakin going to the dark side, you have Luke on the good side. It's the typical good vs evil, hero vs evil counterpart story.

And I guess I should rephrase the Berry comment to say "Anybody who has any idea what acting should be thinks Halle Berry is an amazing actress." You don't win best actress for bad acting.

What I meant was that a lot of people didn't like the way he acted in the Prequal Trilogy. Thus, the Razzie. BUT, like you pointed out, it only made more people notice him. Thus the comment of the SW haters not being too...smart?

Reading too much into it? Not really. You keep posting that it's simplistic but it isn't. First of all, you keep explaining the ORIGINAL trilogy. Luke and the Rebellion only made cameos in the PREQUEL trilogy at best. I already said that the OT WAS black and white, simplistic. But the PT? No it isn't. Its much more grey and people didn't like that. It wasn't about Anakin is evil, the end. Its about the influences on Anakin's life that facilitated his choice in turning into the dark side. His mother's death, vision's of Padme's death, the Jedi looking down on him, being forced to carry the mantle of Chosen One, and Palpatine whispering notions of power in his ear. He becomes conflicted. Amidst all of this, a civil war is going on that is tearing the republic apart and Palpatine is stacking the deck, playing both sides. Its tragic in the sense that Anakin didn't have to turn out the way he did. All he wanted was to be with Padme and live happily, he become so conflicted that he began to seek out power to protect them. It wasn't needed and he end up helping to cause her ultimate demise. Anakin was beaten and "killed" by his "brother" and became a monstrous cyborg with virtually no soul left. It takes the love of his son to save him from Palpatin's hold on him. Together they finally do what Anakin was meant to do so long ago.
All of that I explained was Anakin's story. I didn't even get into the tragedy of the fall of the Republic or the Jedi Order, Padme's death, Luke and Leia's tumultous life, etc.

Now you might say "All of that is dumb. I don't like it." Well thats not a valid reason for saying "SW sucks!". Thats just you not liking the overrall story itself.

What? Founder, I'm shocked. I see the Original Trilogy as having far more levels than the Prequel Trilogy. It's got good versus evil, yes, but it's full of religious overtones and redemption and all sorts of things. I see what your saying on how the Prequel Trilogy isn't simplistic, and I agree, but the OT is a lot more complex than the Prequel Trilogy. I mean, come on.
Actually, perhaps it's just all mushed together, not presiding predominantly over one specific trilogy, but rather the film saga as a whole.

Um not really. The OT isn't REALLY simplistic but against the PT? Yes, yes it is. By a LOT. Mainly when it comes to politics. The OT was just Empire=evil, Rebels=good. Nothing more.

As good a discussion as this is, I think that HH's intentions for this topic was not to debate Star Wars....

We're really off topic.

lol, yes we are. I suppose a topic on this should be created, however, as I still disagree.
But yeah. SWIII should win in all the divisions it is nominated for

I'm not much. SW is my favorite, but Trek is up there too.
But then, as Founder said, this topic isn't about that, so...
I think Battlestar Galactica should definitely win the TV show award. It is a really good show. I've watched a few episodes and it deserves it.
