The Tech Stuff
Registry: NCC-25056
Class: Excelsior (1701-B subtype)
Time Period: 2366 (aka TNG season 3)

More detailed technical specifications are available from the Daystrom Technological Institute. We're using the 1701-B subtype, the second one. Enjoy.

The Basic Idea
Outpost 43-Eridani is a small research station in the orbit of Cassus Prime along the edge of the Federation-Klingon border. The outpost is pioneering advancements in medicine and has scientists from across the Alpha Quadrant participating in its projects, most of which are confidential

Or at least, it was.

Outpost 43-Eridani has not been heard from for two weeks. Its last communication showed no signs of distress, showed nothing out of the ordinary. Starfleet is getting concerned, and the Federation Council is getting antsy.

The USS Serenity has been dispatched to 43-Eridani. Their mission is simple: go to the outpost and find out why they haven't responded to communications.

The outcome . . . not so much.

The Way This Plays
I'm very lazy. So um . . . make it up. Yeah, that's right. You can go ahead and be as creative as you want, just as long as you obey the ground rules.
  • Keep it simple. I'm lazy, but I am a bit of a control freak. Whilst I have no strict overall plot in mind, I intend to guide the overall plot a bit.
  • Keep it canon. Mind the time frame (we don't know about the Dominion, and are quite ignorant of the actual identity of the Borg and such). No uber-powerful inventions that solve every problem (god-modding is bad). And Q will not show up if I have anything to do with this.
  • Don't kill off anyone important. This mostly means other people's characters (that would be god-modding). It also means other people's NPCs, and your NPCs.
  • Don't be trigger-happy. Not everything has to end in a fight, eh? There can be happy resolutions and such.
  • Don't block people. This annoys me. If someone says something that changes the playing field, don't ignore them! Or worse, don't contradict them. Work with each other and feed off of each other. You will be assimilated.
  • Don't rush things. This means that the plot can take time. It's not necessary for the away team to come back to the ship in two days. It could take two months. Don't make things needlessly slow, but don't feel like we're in a hurry.

You should be reasonably active. Posting enough that your character is useful. If you have an issue or something, I don't mind, I'm lazy too. If you need to know what's going on, ask me. If you need to leave or such, tell me.

How to Sell Your Soul
If you've actually read this far, congratulations! You're ready to play. You'll need some polyhedral dice and an index card.

I'm kidding.

(Or am I?)

Send me a PM (please do not post it here) regarding your character. Basic rules: they have to be a species from the Alpha or Beta Quadrants who would have a believable reason to be in Starfleet in 2366. If they aren't an orthodox species but you supply a good reason, I'll let you go for it. If you make up a species, I will send a small army of troll-ninjas after you.

I'm kidding.

(Or am I?)

Here's what your PM should contain:
Name:
Position Requested:
Age:
Gender:
Species:
Short Bio:

The Serenity is neither new nor old; it just is. So your character could have just transferred aboard, or they could have been aboard for several years. Whatever you want. Let me know if you have any questions. On with the show!

On the bridge of the Serenity, Captain Walker sat in the command chair, reading over the day's duty roster and thinking about a cup of tea. They were still a day out from 43-Eridani, and nothing was amiss--yet. He just had to hope that things would stay that way.

Walker glanced up from the PADD that he was reading and looked around the bridge at his officers. Some of them were new, others were old hands, but they all worked well together. This was his second command of a starship, and this was the part that Walker enjoyed the most--the efficiency of a good ship and a good crew.

The Half-Human, Half-Vulcan First Officer of Serenity, Commander Volch du Sema, entered the bridge of the sleek ship from the turbolift.
He looked around the bridge, observing the atmosphere, and then saw the familiar shape of Captain Walker. The commander veered to his right and walked towards the man, who was drinking what appeared to be his usual tea.
Once by him he said, nodding curtly, "Good morning, Captain."

Walker looked up. "Commander. I hope you slept well." He gestured at the rest of the bridge. "It's pretty quiet up here, as you can see."

Lt. Tigan walked out of a small room, only a few meters in size. He then slowly made his way towards his double bed. His navy blue trousers, black shirt and blue waist coat hardly moved as he traveresed the room. Mainly due to the sterilised air and controlled atmostphere onboard a starship. It can be a bit tiresome at times. There are days when all verad wishes it so be able to stand in a lush green field with the wind gusting all around him. But that wasnt how it was in a life on a starship. He didnt mind he was doing what he always wanted and that was enough for him.

As he reached his bed he took a book out from a small bedside table and flung his body onto the bed. He then sighed slightly with a smile as he opened up his book to where the bookmark was neatly placed and began to read. He still had a few hours left before his shift started and needed to catch up on his reading of an old book he found in the ships computer.

I am aware of the silence, the Vulcan replied, taking his seat next to the Captain. While it was not as rare as most half-Vulcan, half-human people for Volch to share more human emotions, including smiles and whatnot, it was far more typical for him to act as the traditional Vulcan stereotype--lacking of emotion, always concentrating on the work at hand, not up for fun in any manner of speaking while working, and, of course, the usual rather monotone voice and intelligent lexicon.
What is our current status, Captain? he inquired, observing the environment around him, the bridge officers bustling about their business.

"We're on the road again," said Walker.

The officer manning the science station swivelled his chair to look over at the two commanding officers. "Sirs, I'm getting long range sensor data on 43-Eridani now."

Walker nodded. "Any sign of damage?"

"It's too early to tell at this point, sir. But I'm picking up an unusual electromagnetic signature. . . ."

Walker glanced at Volch. "It appears," he said, "that we have a mystery on our hands. When we get to the outpost, if the atmosphere is intact, I'll probably send you over there with a team--a heavily armed team."

Sitting on his bed relaxing, Verad found him self wizing through the pages of the book. He enjoyed reading but rarely had the time to do so...or rather his mind wasnt usually clear enough to sit in silence and read.

The book was called "Common Ground". It was a collection of three short stories spanning through the begining to end of the 20th century on earth. Through the threee storys the book followed three humans, one female and two male. Each having to cope in there own ways with homosexuality and the problems it caused in there community, each going through the same problem at different points in the century.
Off world history fascinated Verad, each race overcoming social problems, technological advancements and each discovering science in there own way. He was surprised at how many different, diverse sub-cultures were on earth even hundreds of years before starfleet was created by them. But when it comes to human literature, he was impressed by it but he simply found that he prefered literature from Betazed and even his home world, Trill.

He became distracted by the replicator sitting across the room from him. He suddenly had the urge to get a glass of Tarsec Paritif. The replicator could never get the mixture quite right but still he wasnt too bothered. He went over and replicated it and stood there drinkng whilst looking around this quarters. He was getting a bit restless and couldnt wait for his shift to start.

The latter, I believe, Volch spoke, alluding to, in particular, the heavily armed team, would be a wise precaution, Captain. This is a most intriguing situation. I would very much like to decipher this situation in its entirety as quickly as possible, and remedy the situation.

He then paused and looked up at the science officer, stating, Do the sensor readings display further information of note regarding the planet and outpost, Ensign?

The young human shook his head. "Sensor resolution is limited at this range sir. I'm detecting that odd EM signature, but otherwise everything should be normal. We'll be able to determine more when we arrive in a few hours."

Walker nodded then looked pointedly at Volch. "My ready room, Commander . . ." he said in the tone that implied their conversation would not be casual.

The Vulcan first officer stood and walked around the command area towards the Captain's ready room.
Volch was curious as to what was so important that the Captain would speak with him in the ready room. Perhaps there was more to this outpost than he had originally thought?
The Vulcan digressed as he arrived at the entrance, allowing the Captain to enter first.

Walker entered his ready room. The doors closed behind him and the captain took a seat. He motioned for Volch to do the same.

He asked, "How much do you know of the activities at Outpost 43-Eridani?"

"I know little about Outpost 43-Eridani, Captain," the officer replied. "What I am aware of is the nature of the outpost. It is, or was, a small research station in the orbit of Cassus Prime. It was pioneering advancements in medicine and contained scientists spanning the entire Alpha Quadrant participating in its projects. The majority of these projects were confidential. However, Starfleet lost contact with the outpast approximately two weeks ago, with its final communication showing no signs of distress and nothing unordinary."
He paused, and then raised his left eyebrow. "Why? Is there further information about the Outpost that you are aware of?"

Walker absent-mindedly fiddled with a hologram of a hypercube that sat on one corner of his desk. "Outpost 43-Eridani was basically Starfleet Medical's dump site. It got all of the projects that Starfleet Medical didn't feel like assigning elsewhere. Many of these included classified research assignments.

"Even I'm not aware of the particulars of most of those research projects. They are so secret that, in a few cases, only Federation Council members have knowledge of them. But I know that the Council is quite agitated." Walker had contacted his colleagues from Starfleet Intelligence. "I still have friends in the intelligence community, and the word is that the research there was 'critical'."

Volch raised his eyebrow once again. Critical? "Curious as to what research matters could be critical at the outpost," he stated.
He studied the ready room, randomly, in thought. "I would therefore surmise that the away team should proceed with consideral caution and prudence during our mission to the outpost, provided that it is secure enough for the team to make a presence there?"
Volch hoped that politics was not involved in any way with this matter. He absolutely abhored politics and the absolute corrupt nature of politicians across the board.

USS Serenity, Bridge

Marisa Revar, the USS Serentiy's Chief Medical Officer, stepped out of the Turbolift onto the Bridge.

Marisa was a woman of about 30, with long black hair and sky blue eyes. She was a beautiful Human woman with a knack for medicine. She had loved medicine ever since she was a child on Turkana IV.

Marisa walked down the ramp towards the Captain. From what she could hear amongst the Bridge Crew, it appeared that the Serenity was nearing Outpost 43-Eridani.

Despite her 10+ years in Starfleet Medical, Marisa had never heard about what went on at Eridani. She was curious to learn about whatever "critical" medical experiments were going on at the Outpost.

Marisa approached the Captain's Ready Room, hoping to find the Captain. She had been in Sick Bay for the last couple of hours. She wanted an update of the current "situation". She could have used the combadge, but she wanted to stretch her legs.

"Anything new?" Marisa asked into the speaker on the console next to the Captain's Ready Room, with her hands jammed into the pockets of her teal overcoat. Marisa waited a moment, but she didn't receive an answer. A second later, she could hear voices from within the Ready Room. It sounded like the voices of the Captain and the First Officer, Commander Volch.

Marisa, not wanting to disturb their conversation, stepped back, waiting for the Captain.

-Captain's Ready Room-

"Caution, yes. But be very thorough. I'd like to think that the station is fine and this is just a minor power problem, but I've been around too long to even hope that. We both know that the outpost has been compromised in some matter."

He looked over at the LCARS console on his desk. "I'd like to save anyone or anything left. But if it turns out that any sensitive information has been accessed . . . we're going to have to make sure that it is not exposed."

((We can leave the ready room unless you've got anything else you need to cover.))

"Of course, Captain," Volch replied. "Starfleet would be most displeased if sensitive and latent information was leaked to more persons than it already has been. It could also, naturally, bring about harmful consequences if that information was, in fact, accessed. Cautious and thorough. No doubt, as you say, there was a disturbance of sorts on the station."
The Vulcan paused, regarding his commanding officer, and said, "Do you wish to discuss more, Captain, or should we return to the bridge?"

After finishing his drink, Lt Tigan slipped into his starfleet uniform then headed for his station on the bridge.

Bridge
The turbo life doors opened and shortly after, Verad stepped out. He turned to his right and took a few steps forward. Placing his hand on the ensigns shoulder he calmly said "Thank you ensign, ill be taking my post now if you dont mind" With that she said queitly "certainly sir" and got up from the chair and headed for the turbo lift.

He grabbed the back of the chair and turned it around and then sat down. After entering his code into the consol he then checked over some of the recently sensor logs and science reports made since he was last on duty.

"No, that's about all, Commander," said Walker. He got up and led the way out of the bridge. As he exited the ready room, he saw that both Dr. Marisa and Lt. Tigan had arrived on the bridge. He nodded at the former.

He resumed his seat in the command chair and said to their ops officer, "Mr. Hardy, what's our ETA?"

USS Serenity, Bridge

Marisa, who had been standing in a dark corner, filing her nails with an iron file that she had kept in the pocket of her overcoat, stopped what she was doing, pocketed her file, and walked over to the Captain, who had just returned from his "meeting" with Commander Volch.

Marisa approached the Captain from the right. Standing beside the seated Captain, Marisa looked down, with a slight smirk on her face.

"Is your little meeting over with, Captain?" Marisa asked, jokingly. "If I may...do you have any further news on this Eridani station?" Marisa asked. Without skipping a beat, Marisa continued, not allowing the Captain to speak. "I am eager to see this station, myself. It holds so many secrets of Starfleet Medical. Who knows? Some of the stuff hidden there could be of great importance to the medical community..." Marisa was rambling, not even paying attention to the Captain. Once she realized that she was rambling, Marsia's face blushed, turning blood red. She tried to cover her face, feeling embarassed and stupid. "Oh! I am sorry, Captain. I didn't even allow you to speak!" Marisa tried to explain, looking down towards the ground at her boots.

Dr. Marisa. Never one to waste a breath. Walker smiled calmly. "Our mission, doctor, isn't to find out what 43-Eridani has to offer. As curious as I am, we have one priority: find out what happened, and right it if possible."

"That is correct," the Vulcan first officer remarked from the Captain's side. "While we will be thorough in our search to discover what has transpired on the station, we will not exceed our mandate. Discovering what medical experiments were carried out there, as fascinating as it is, is not our assignment."

USS Serenity, Bridge

Marisa let out a disappointed sigh. She had hoped that they would be able to learn about the mysteries of the medical station. However, orders are orders.

"I understand, Captain..." Marisa muttered. "I wish that we had come at a better time. We would have been able to learn so much." Marisa sighed. "Well...what can you do?" Marisa perked up. "We still have another mystery on our hands, though. Do you know anything of what happened to the station and its crew? I can't believe that we could just lose contact-" Marisa snapped her fingers. "-without notice or a warning or anything." Marisa had began ranting, again. Marisa sure could talk.
